just need to rant real quick about fandom culture because i feel like it gets so hard to find joy in it these days???? idk if its just the circles i find myself in but every other day there are either people completely barraging a particular fictional character and completely missing out on the nuances in the writing OR just being completely parasocial with the characters AND the actors who play those characters and they just Cannot be normal, respectful people or BOTH and gOD----

is it bad that i headcanon that ryan holds a complicated relationship with his faith even after all that's happened?
because when he was young he used to love going to church, he loved how everyone in town would be gathered in that one place the same time each week and he loved the songs they sang even though he didn't quite understand them and he had felt loved in return
and obviously he no longer did, and he hated christianity and the pastors and the church and that shithole of a town and his parents and even god, especially after what they'd all done to him and naim. but one day he finds a lgbtqia+ inclusive church in the city by chance. and he and naim go in because he couldn't believe that this was even possible. and there'd be brochures on how this church is a safe and affirming place for lgbtqia+ people. and they'd just sit in one of the pews, right at the back, in the silence because there's no service going on at that moment and there's no one except for another stranger praying near the front.
and after a while ryan would start crying silently. for reasons he couldn't even begin to explain himself. and naim would just hold him.

I don't think people understand that the handjob on the bus scene wasn't an "over exaggerated scene of pleasure"-- the intense shots and emotions might not have even been about the damn handjob itself. Someone I watched it with was like "it cannot feel that good" (in reference to the hand clutching the window and lips quivering).
It isn't about the damn handjob. It's about the fact that they just learnt that they see each other, and what the demon is supposed to take shape of is the person they love the most. It's about the mutual feelings that they know are now returned. Before they thought it was just a hook-up type of thing, Ryan wouldn't even talk to him at school. But now they know how much they mean to each other.
Like yes, the physical pleasure obviously is the main point, but the thing that makes it toe-curling is the emotions behind it

maybe a hot take but when ryanaim argue ryan is def a silent treatment type of guy and naim is the one that yells. pulling from the crumbs of verbal conflict they have in the film, naim's reaction after the funnel web spider joke is pretty telling abt his character. he doesn't pout and leave, he advances angrily and yells "fuck you, you cunt" trying to start a physical fight he knows he won't win. naim's knee jerk reaction to being made fun of/being mad is to yell and swear and shove.
comparing this to ryan's emotions after finding out naim outed him (even though ofc these scenes aren't rllyyy comparable but yk. crumbs) the fact that when he says "naim what the fuck is she talking about" he's still not really raising his voice… even after getting beat up he still saves naim, drives him home safe. in the car he's quiet, voice tight and measured more so bc he's on the verge of angry tears rather than yelling at him. so yeah, post-canon ryanaim def argue but i think ryan is the type to storm out/go completely silent and ignore naim and naim is the one yelling and saying things he doesn't mean in the heat of the moment. ryan's anger makes him passive, naim's makes him destructive.
i think this carries over to their conflict resolution as well. ryan is the type to let things blow over with time and not talk about it, while naim craves verbal reconcilation once he's processed. i think in the early stages of their relationship this itself becomes it's own area of conflict--ryan dismissing naim's earnest attempts to reconcile as stupid and how he's "already over it so why are you bringing it up again", and naim taking that as a rejection. but over the years they learn eachother's needs and figure out a way to meet in the middle.

naim would still be ridden with guilt over what he did years after they left town and one day he'd ask ryan if he ever regrets it all, if he would choose not to be involved with naim at all initially if he knew it would end up like this
and ryan would tell naim that he would go back and do it all over again if it meant that they could be here, in their new life together

can we talk about how tender leviticus was despite being a horror film? like yes the homophobia the isolation the haunting of the entity itself were all terrifying and the fear naim and ryan were feeling throughout the film was extremely palpable, but i feel like there was also this steady stream of tenderness bolstering it all?
it's in ryan's protectiveness towards naim that shines through even when he's hurt himself, it's in the way naim lets his guard down with the entity because he wants to be seen and to be loved in a town where nobody seems to (not even his mother), it's in the way ryan tells naim "it will never be me" but still makes sure he gets home safe, and then the way he looks so relieved when he realised it's the real naim (his naim) at the bus stop when he was ready to just leave town all alone---which, might i add, was probably an idea that naim gave him in the first place.
these two boys' love for each other makes me sick and i want nothing but the best for them.
ryan loves using terms of endearment on naim, calls him baby, sweetheart, babe, love, never raises his voice at naim even when they fight but also never says i love you because he's terrified of things becoming too real.
naim never calls ryan anything other than his name (and the occasional dick, cunt, asshole but he never means it), but he's the first to say i love you between the two of them, because he's brave like that.
ryan is the more protective one out of them two, but naim is brave enough for the both of them when it comes down to things like that.
