Apsara makes a little shrine of flowers, with her favorite necklace and sweets. She kneels before it and covers her hair with the end of her sari. Folding her hands and lowering her head slightly, she whispers with a smile:

"I hope my prayers reach you, beloved god. I hope they find you well and happy and I hope most of all that they bring you to me."

Loki silently appears behind the kneeling woman. "You didn't specify which god you were speaking to," he says, "I hope the god of mischief will suffice"

She smiles and shifts to face him.

"You were the one I was looking for," she replies, blushing lightly, "Your eyes are kind as Priyansh told me they were. Or, no, he said you knew him as Marius. I've only ever heard stories about you and seen your portrait that my nephew drew. I desired to meet you."

What Apsara elected not to say, was that with said portrait and every cheerfully recounted story, she had started to fall deeper and deeper in love with the Trickster God. But that was a fact to be kept close to heart at the moment.

She looked up at him and bowed slightly.

"My name is Apsara, how may I serve you?" she asked with a hint of cheek in her otherwise deferential statement.

Not-So-Peaceful Night

It had been a peaceful evening so far. Quinlan had found a nice perch overlooking the river, and was enjoying a rare drink and much-less-rare bit of music when he spotted something- or rather someone- floating toward him on the current. Without a second thought, he set aside his lyre and dove in to drag the person to shore.

Once they were both out of the water, Quinlan rolled the dark-haired stranger onto his side and checked his pulse. “Courts, please don’t be dead.”

Quinlan almost looked horrified. “Of course I wouldn’t do anything like that to you! Any sane person wouldn’t!” He fiddled with one of the tuning pins on his lyre, worried. “…Stars, we need to get you some real friends.”

"I do have a lot of life to catch up on, and I'm excited to do it with you," Marius coos tenderly, with a soft little giggle.

Hello, I am Loki of Asgard, God of Mischeif. To whom should I speak about arranging a marriage for my son to Quinlan Eira?

I believe my son, Marius, is a very fine candidate for marriage. He is very kind and sweet, and has spectacular healing powers.

Am I doing this correctly? Marius sent me. I have never arranged a marriage before, but apparently this is something a father should do.

He also sends these, a bouquet of colorful flowers. He was not certain of your favorite color so he chose as many colors as possible.

“You would speak to me, Loki of Asgard.” With a brief, commanding murmur and a wave of her hand, the dark-haired goddess dismissed the attendant she had been speaking to and turned her full attention to Loki, smiling.

“My name is Lorelei, and as both head of our small pantheon and goddess of marriage, I am best equipped to handle such things. Your Marius does indeed sound like a fine candidate for marriage, and it would be my pleasure to negotiate with you.”

She gestured for him to follow her into a parlor-esque room. “I have already sent for Quinlan. He should be here shortly, so please, make yourself comfortable. Would you like a drink while we wait? Perhaps water, or tea?”

“A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Lady Lorelei. I will send for Marius as well, then.” With a flick of his hand there is a momentary flash of green. “I have just sent him a message.”

Loki takes a seat in the parlor, a picture of princely elegance. “And I am a fan of green tea, if you have it, thank you.”

As he waits for the tea, he adds, “I must admit I am at a loss for what goes on during these negotiations. My brother was always set to inherit, so any discussion of an arranged marriage was focused on him.”

After a brief conversation with another messenger, Lorelei sits across from Loki with a laugh. “While I have witnessed many arranged marriages in my time, this would be the first one I am personally arranging, and it seems rather different from this perspective. That said, you seem to be doing a fine job.”

At this point, one of her messengers brings a tray bearing tea and some small snacks, placing it on the low coffee table between them. “So, to business, then. Quinlan is the god of mischief of our pantheon, much like you, though his domain also covers travel, luck, and ingenuity. He is, admittedly, flighty and impulsive, but also loyal to a fault. He-”

Before she can say more, Quinlan himself appears, stepping from an iridescent tear in space. He wears his usual face, his eyes gold at the moment, as well as rugged traveler’s clothes, including a cloak. “Lorelei, I just got your message, what’s- Ah.” He tugs at the cut fingers of one glove at the sight of Loki, hiding slightly more of the cursemark before giving a sweeping bow and joining Lorelei where she sat. “You must be Loki of Asgard. Quinlan Eira, at your service.”

Marius enters through another portal, that Loki had taught him to make. He wears a beautiful cream white, silk mekhela sador and matching jewelry, pretty but not ostentatious.

He catches Quinlan's entrance and smiles shyly, catching his golden eyes once before blushing and looking to the side. He folds his hands and bows courteously to Lorelei and Quinlan.

"Hello, Your Ladyship," he speaks to Lorelei first, voice soft and well-mannered, "Thank you for being so kind to host my Father and me in your lovely home. I do hope you liked the flowers I requested my Father to give you at his earlier arrival?"

"Quinlan, it's lovely to see you as well," Marius addresses, warmth and adoration in his voice, "I brought this little gift for you, I hope you'll like it."

He reaches into his satchel to fish out a box of new high-quality silk lyre strings.

"I saw these in the market and the vendor told me they were of a rare quality and you play the lyre so I thought they might be nice to have," Marius rambled slightly. He then went to Loki's side, giving his father a quick, affectionate kiss on the cheek and smiling demurely.

“Oh, no, the only payment I’d need would be the opportunity to play together. Best save that dress for another town, if you choose to sell it at all.” Quinlan laughed, still strumming away at his lyre. “Take it from a professional vagabond, when you’re on the run, the last thing you want to do is give your pursuer clues. Besides, I should think you’d want to do something cathartic, like burn it- not that you have to, of course, your course of action was just unexpected.”

Marius nodded. It made sense, the logic of it. Anyways, the doctor most likely wouldn’t realize he wasn’t dead until quite a bit later.

“Thank you, Quinlan, you really are so kind to me, a true friend. I admire it dearly,” Marius replied, completely unused to the way Quinlan would treat him, he felt a gentle blush flutter on his cheeks.

“In any case,” Marius continued, “I can use the dress as a cleaning rag, or if clothes need mending, then I suppose parts of it can be used as patches. The reason I offered to sell it was only because I wanted to use the money to pay you for the flute you were talking about.”

Marius sidled up to him and shyly leaned his cheek on Quinlan’s shoulder, entranced by the lyre.

“When you play music, it feels as if all my worries have melted into honey and my heart is bursting into rose petals,” Marius gushed.

Quinlan laughed as he continued playing, not moving away from Marius. He enjoyed the contact- it was rare enough in his travels that he let someone get close, let alone lean on him- and it seemed like Marius needed it. “I do believe that’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said about my music. Are you sure you didn’t hit your head in the river?”

Marius giggled and nestled closer, heart calming at the physical contact.

“No, and even if I did, I think your laugh and smile would have healed me already,” Marius quipped without thinking. Realizing his flirtatious mistake, his lips pouted in embarrassment and he began to fiddle with his hair.

A light blush settled across Quinlan’s cheeks, his fingers slipping on the lyre to a brief flurry of discordant notes. “Well, I, um… You’re quite the charmer, you know that?” He wasn’t upset or uncomfortable, just flustered, his mind reeling to process what was happening.

Marius giggled softly at the comment.

“I didn’t know that, Quinlan, but I’m very glad for it,” he replied. The man seemed to sport a slight blush, not angered by Marius’s slight overstep. It was new to be able to say something so freely without the fear of a cruel strike of the hand or a sharp jerk to the hair.

“Have you been charmed before?” Marius ventured curiously, “I mean to say, have you someone you hold or held dear to your heart?”

“Ah, now that’s a question, isn’t it?” Quinlan laughed, picking up a more lively song instead of the ballad he’d been playing earlier. “It would be more surprising at my age to have not had someone I care for at least once. I have had a few people who fit such a description. All of them are gone, now.”

Marius smiled and began to gently drum his fingers to the beat of the song.

“I’m certain they were grateful to have known you, Quinlan, you’re an admirable man to be friends with,” Marius mused sincerely. Quinlan was so calm, and good, and dignified, and Marius found himself overwrought with nascent adoration.

“I’m afraid I’ve never had anyone dear to me in such a way. The only man I ever fell for was the same that kidnapped and tortured me for so long,” Marius sighed, the words bitter on his tongue.

“And I them.” Quinlan murmured softly, smiling at Marius, “And you.”

He paused to think a moment at Marius’s admission. “…As for someone for you to care for, I’m sure you’ll find someone, someone who won’t do such things to you.”

Marius nodded. It made sense, the logic of it. Anyways, the doctor most likely wouldn’t realize he wasn’t dead until quite a bit later.

“Thank you, Quinlan, you really are so kind to me, a true friend. I admire it dearly,” Marius replied, completely unused to the way Quinlan would treat him, he felt a gentle blush flutter on his cheeks.

“In any case,” Marius continued, “I can use the dress as a cleaning rag, or if clothes need mending, then I suppose parts of it can be used as patches. The reason I offered to sell it was only because I wanted to use the money to pay you for the flute you were talking about.”

Marius sidled up to him and shyly leaned his cheek on Quinlan’s shoulder, entranced by the lyre.

“When you play music, it feels as if all my worries have melted into honey and my heart is bursting into rose petals,” Marius gushed.

Quinlan laughed as he continued playing, not moving away from Marius. He enjoyed the contact- it was rare enough in his travels that he let someone get close, let alone lean on him- and it seemed like Marius needed it. “I do believe that’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said about my music. Are you sure you didn’t hit your head in the river?”

Marius giggled and nestled closer, heart calming at the physical contact.

“No, and even if I did, I think your laugh and smile would have healed me already,” Marius quipped without thinking. Realizing his flirtatious mistake, his lips pouted in embarrassment and he began to fiddle with his hair.

A light blush settled across Quinlan’s cheeks, his fingers slipping on the lyre to a brief flurry of discordant notes. “Well, I, um… You’re quite the charmer, you know that?” He wasn’t upset or uncomfortable, just flustered, his mind reeling to process what was happening.

Marius giggled softly at the comment.

"I didn't know that, Quinlan, but I'm very glad for it," he replied. The man seemed to sport a slight blush, not angered by Marius's slight overstep. It was new to be able to say something so freely without the fear of a cruel strike of the hand or a sharp jerk to the hair.

"Have you been charmed before?" Marius ventured curiously, "I mean to say, have you someone you hold or held dear to your heart?"

Not-So-Peaceful Night

It had been a peaceful evening so far. Quinlan had found a nice perch overlooking the river, and was enjoying a rare drink and much-less-rare bit of music when he spotted something- or rather someone- floating toward him on the current. Without a second thought, he set aside his lyre and dove in to drag the person to shore.

Once they were both out of the water, Quinlan rolled the dark-haired stranger onto his side and checked his pulse. “Courts, please don’t be dead.”

“Oh, no, the only payment I’d need would be the opportunity to play together. Best save that dress for another town, if you choose to sell it at all.” Quinlan laughed, still strumming away at his lyre. “Take it from a professional vagabond, when you’re on the run, the last thing you want to do is give your pursuer clues. Besides, I should think you’d want to do something cathartic, like burn it- not that you have to, of course, your course of action was just unexpected.”
