School Rooftop - 1 year and a half ago
"Ugh," groaned Hillary as she looked at her shoe. "Ewwww, I think I stepped on bird shit."
Selinda and Lily laughed.
"shut up bitches, this is serious!"
"You got rich parents, Hill," Brittany chimed in, turning around from overlooking the school and looking at her friends, a cigarette in her right hand. "You can just buy new ones."
At that Hillary settled down and grounded her shoe to remove the feces. "Why are we here anyway?"
"Britt and I need a new joint," Selinda said. "We are running out."
At that, Hillary scoffs. "We are seeing the dyke again-"
"You better shut the fuck up before I knock your teeth out, Hillary," Mara's voice echoed on the roof. The girls turn towards the door. She was carrying her backpack in one arm. She was dressed in black t shirt and pants with red outlines and a red skull in the middle. Her hair was more of. a mane that reached her back. Everyone laughed except for Hillary who pouted as her eyes followed Mara.
"It's just a joke, Hill. Don't take it personally," Brittany said with a soft almost motherly tone of voice. She turned to Mara. "How's life, Ubergirl?"
Mara chuckled cynically as she greeted Brittany. "Shitty as usual."
"Same here. Gimme that shit," Brittany replied. Selinda chimed in and the three girls split a joint between them while Lily looked at her phone and Hillary fumed.
"So you got me those tickets," Mara asked overlooking the school.
"Tickets done and VIP on top of it because I love you so much, Ubergirl," Brittany said with a chuckle as she produced the tickets and handed one over to Mara.
"What is that?" Hillary asked.
"Oh! It's for Jelly Bean's concert. She's coming to Metropolis next week," Brittany said.
"You got one for me?"
"Why? You don't like her," Selinda chimed in. Hillary was about to rush at Selinda but Brittany stopped her with a wave.
"Relax, Hill. I'll get you one by tomorrow, ok?" Brittany told her with a genuine look causing Hillary's face to turn from frown to bright smile.
"And the stupid one gets her way again," Mara muttered, getting a small laugh out of Selinda. Brittany held back a chuckle of her own, Hillary was none the wiser.
"Ok, girls I need to discuss serious shit with Strong here so leave us." Lily and Selinda obeyed while Hillary looked between Brittany and Mara one last time, her eyes narrowing on Mara before leaving.
"I swear one day your 'girlfriend' is gonna kill me," Mara said dead pan.
Brittany laughed. "Oh please, you'll knock her flat on her ass before she can even scratch you. I don't call you Ubergirl for nothing." Mara chuckled, passing the joint to Brittany who takes a piece. "This is the good shit," Brittany said.
"So what you got for me now?"
"There's this stupid girl, Langley or whatever is her name. She's got herself her own little clique and thinks she can fuck with us. So I thought maybe you can chime in and beat their asses."
Mara scoffed. "One against how many? I'm not a machine Britt."
"Oh don't worry. Selinda will get her hands dirty with you. We'll be there as support. Come on It's not like you haven't done those odds before." She stopped and looked behind her to make sure no one was there listening and closed the distance between herself and Mara. "I'll get you an in with Josh. I know for a fact he's got his eye on you."
"What?" Mara laughed. "Isn't he with Hillary right now?"
"Uhuh, just like he was with me some months ago and half of the cheerleader team? You and I both know no one can tie him down."
"And you got no issues with that."
"I just don't see the point. Why bother being petty over it? We fucked, oh wow now we are destined forever." Brittany said sarcastically. "Truth is there's not much shit I care about. It's not like I feel anything."
"Right, your permanent cold heart."
"Why do you think I ask you for this shit," she raised the joint as she said this.
"And also why you are a bitch with everyone," Mara added. Brittany laughed.
"Damn right. Every bitch in this silly town is my bitch and they gotta learn that lesson. And you are the baddest bitch on this town."
"Your attack dog more like."
"So?" Brittany said with genuine curiosity. "What's so bad about it? You do stuff for me, I do stuff for you. It's the perfect friendship. I don't have to cuddle you or watch your feelings or any of that tired shit. You get it!" Mara chuckled darkly at that. "And besides, play your cards right, stick with me and you might get your ticket to become an actual Ubergirl."
"What do you mean?"
Brittany turned to her and the grin on her face was enough to scare even Mara. Every time Brittany grinned like that, something big has happened or she was about to do something big. And those somethings were always bound to be horrible. But it was not Mara's problem. It never was. It was a transaction. She didn't have to care about anything. As Brittany said, 'she got it.'
"I mean that soon big things are going to happen and you are gonna want to be on the right side." With that, Brittany handed over Mara's phone. Mara opened her eyes wide wondering how the shorter girl got her phone. But more than that; how did she unlock it?
Present - Hospital - Brittany Morgan's room
Hillary sat by her friend with sullen eyes looking down. "They left. All of them. Lily turned into some monster and Selinda won't talk to me anymore. Josh doesn't even bother talking to me anymore and the school laughs behind my back. I need you Britt. I need you back. You are the only one that got me. Please I need you!"
But there was no response. The comatose Brittany lied on her bed like a soulless doll. Empty, peaceful, lumbering, only the sound of the heart rate monitor in the room. After a few more minutes of waiting and getting no response Hillary stood up and bid her goodbyes. As the door closed and left the teenager behind, the heart rate's monitor begun beeping faster. And faster. Faster. The other machines acted erratic, shaking, displays showed wild numbers, images, outlines of one silhoutte tearing another to pieces. They shook and raged until… nothing. They turned back to normal. But on one of the screens, one that displayed all of her vital signs, a blue outline rested. An outline in the form of a young girl and on her face shining blue eyes twisted in anger before she disappeared completely. Only the sound of the heartrate monitor echoed in the room.
Dr. Mayne's office - Smallville
"-and two weeks ago we went to a carnival! I mean a giant water monster attacked but before that it was fun!" Kara finished her recount of what she and Mara did two weeks ago to Dr. Mayne who. wrote down in everything as Kara spoke. "Other than that we haven't gotten to much else. Just going to school and hanging out at Pete's."
"I've been to Pete's. Credit to his burgers, they are good," Mayne added with a smile.
"That's what Mara always says," Kara said while laughing.
Mayne looked at her thoughtfully writing one last thing down before continuing. "Seems like Mara is more than what the town portrays her as."
"You have no idea," Kara adds with an eye roll. "Yeah she can a bit aggressive but I can be the same and no one says anything about me."
"Maybe its because of that girl she punched?"
"Yeah, Hillary. She totally deserves it though! Trust me."
"What about this boy, Josh was it?"
"He's a doofus and I hate how much I like him for it," Kara said with a laugh. "Last week he made a stupid joke about squirrels I think? I don't remember but it was so stupid and lame but I couldn't stop laughing! Also he makes sure everyone, Hillary included, stops bothering me and Mara so that's a plus too."
"You mentioned he has also been hitting on you. How do you feel about that?"
Kara shrugged. "Fine. Better than the others. He doesn't make it awkward and stops when you tell him to. And he hits on anything with two legs and a pretty face so…" she left the last part unspoken as if she did not have a word for it.
"So ever since you got here, you've have made new friends, you have settled as a superhero and have not lost control of your anger in a while. You'd say things have gotten better for you now?"
Kara sat back in silence for a moment, thinking. She smiled softly and said "Yeah, I think it has."
School cafeteria - Lunch time
"So I lost my private studies privileges," Josh casually commented as he took another sip of orange juice.
"Shouldn't have tried flirting with Ms. freaking Starr," Mara added with a smug smile.
"Don't you mean Ms. 'Bazooka' Starr?" Josh shot back with a smirk and Mara shrunk in her seat.
"You two are nuts," Kara said with a chuckle, taking a bite out of her food.
"I think incorrigible would be the word the teachers would use," Josh said.
Mara shrugged. "Better than being the delinquent."
Josh chuckled. "You have gotten softer lately."
"I can still leave a bruise, you know? Maybe then I won't look so soft to you?"
Kara felt the need to chime in but she shrugged, chuckled and took a bite of her food. Their banter was calming, entertaining and their way of getting along. It felt nice to let them go at it without interfering. She looked on around the cafeteria and the last picture she ever thought to see was there; Hillary Murdoch, chin instead of up, expression neutral instead of smug, and alone instead of surrounded by lackeys. "Is that Hillary?"
Josh and Mara followed Kara's sight and ended up on Hillary, seeing the exact same thing.
"Well shit," Mara started. "Finally got what she deserved."
Josh made no comment, simply shrugging and moving on with his food.
"Don't shrug on us," Mara insisted.
"I just don't think she's worth wasting time over," he said with a cold tone that froze both girls.
"Ouch," Mara said. "What did she do to you?"
"Private," he said and left it at that. It was the first time he shut down like that. Josh Bender was anything if not outgoing and loud. But Hillary seems to be a sore subject.
"The fuck you want?" Mara's voice snapped Kara out of her thoughts and she turned in the direction Mara was glaring at. Hillary was right in front of them and Kara's face became a mirror of Mara's.
"Not going to fight! Just want to talk to Josh!" Hillary said with the sweetest most innocent voice she could muster.
"What is it now, Hill?" Josh said, eyes still on his food.
"I was wondering if you were free afterschool?"
"No," the response came faster than Kara's kryptonian mind could process. And from Mara's own wide eyes, she could tell her best friend felt the same.
Hillary laughed, awkwardly. "What do you mean? We could-"
"I said no," he said and this time he was looking at her and a chill ran down Kara's spine. "Let's make this clear, you burned your bridge with me a while ago. I tried to be nice but you kept pushing even after Brittany herself told you to keep a leash on it. Now because every other girl in your group finally said they had enough you jump to my arms? Didn't you learn your lesson the last time?" Hillary stayed quiet. Kara froze and Mara was holding back her laugh. "No? Then here's a reminder; You are nothing but a spoiled pitty party Brittany picked up on the side walk and without her, you are nothing. I told you we were done. The only reason you even got an invite to my house and I played nice was because of who surrounded you. Now you got no one and I won't play the rebound."
Hillary opened her mouth as if to say something but one look from Josh stopped her. Instead she changed targets. "Guess this is your fault, huh? You fucking dyke did this!" It took exactly 0.5 seconds for Mara to drop her spoon and try to jump over the table. Josh jumped in at the same time as if he had already know what was going to happen. Kara's kryptonian mind and body allowed her to also react fast enough to wrap her arms around her friend and pull her back. As strong as Mara was, she could not overpower both of them.
"You want another fucking black eye, bitch?" Mara yelled struggling against her friends.
Hillary had stepped back instinctively, seemingly remembering the last time Mara had laid her hands on her. "Go back to the cage, Strong. You are just a dog. Always were." she said before quickly turning on her heel and walking away.
Once she was sufficiently away, Josh and Kara let her go and Mara sat down with force. She picked up the bottle of water to her side opening it up but suddenly it slipped her fingers and fell on her legs. "Fuck!" she yelled at the top of her lungs. Josh tried to calm her down but Mara wanted to hear none of it. Kara stayed quiet and put her hand on her shoulder. Mara looked at her and her eyes softened before she took a deep breath.
"It's ok, Mara," Kara finally said.
"It'll be when that bitch gets a fist to the face."
Flashback - A year ago - Bender household.
Hillary sat beside Brittany with a smug look on her face. "So I told her to get lost before I called you girls up and she ran like a scared little bunny," they all laughed saved for Mara, who ate with a neutral expression in her face. They were in Josh's house where other students, specifically the futboll and cheerleaders were hanging out along with other students.
"Seriously, someone like Linda Rollings hanging out with us?" Selinda said with a disgusted look in her face.
"Can't see it. She's a freckled little mess," Lily added beside her. "Can you believe her dad is a trash guy?" the other girls make a disgusted look at that.
Hillary then turned to Mara with a smug look. "I mean its not. like we haven't picked up trash before," she said with venom.
Brittany's look instantly changed from laughter to cold annoyance while Lily and Selinda were wiser and took a sip of their drinks.
Mara in turn had stopped eating and put her fork down. "You got something to say, Hill?"
"I didn't say anything," Hillary replied with fake innocence.
"You're right," Mara begun with an equally fake smile. "I forget there's nothing in that head ninety nine percent of the time."
Hillary gulped, Selinda and Lily slided back and Brittany was already covering her face with her hand.
"Why don't you just piss off, dyke," Hillary shot and that's when Brittany had enough.
Before Mara could even process it Brittany gave her the same look she always did when it was time to reign herself in. That cold emotionless look of 'I'll handle this, you stay put. I won't say it again.' So instead she punched the aluminium table, denting it.
Brittany grabbed Hillary by the arm like a parent picking up their disrespectful child and pulled her away, the other girl complaining but not resisting.
"What the hell are you doing?" Brittany finally said once they were out of earshot in a corner outside of the kitchen.
"What? I didn't do anything wrong. It's her fault for not taking a joke."
"Hill," Brittany's tone had turned cold and ruthless and the look she was giving Hillary was a vicious one. Not quite glaring but as close as one could get without narrowing their eyes.
At last Hillary cracked. "Why the fuck is she here? She's not one of us! Her parents are shit workers in some office."
"Forget her parents Hill. She's a good thing for us."
"Right, like a dog."
It took all of Brittany's power not to facepalm in front of her friend. She looked at Hillary like a sister, but her lack of a filter could be frustrating to deal with. "You can't just go around insulting her. If you keep doing it, you are putting me in a very bad position." Her eyes bore into Hillary's with a new intensity. "You don't want that, do you? To cause me problems?"
Hillary looked at her with sudden recognition. "No, no I'm so sorry Britt! I promise I won't again."
Brittany caressed her hair one last time with a practiced smile. "Good girl. Now lets go back."
"Didn't you gave him a purple eye last week?" Selinda asked Mara with a laugh at the base of her throat.
"And a bloody nose," Mara added with satisfaction, causing Selinda and Lily to laugh. They were reminiscing of one time a boy from the football team tried to get too friendly with them. Mara sucker punched him without a second thought. His parents tried to sue but Brittany interfered and convinced her parents to have his parents settle down.
"Yeah and you left me one player shorter that month," Josh said, appearing behind Mara like a haunting ghost. The girls gasped before laughing it off, Mara included.
"Should have known when to pull back," Mara added to him.
"Oh I know, trust me. I'm just stating a fact," he said, taking a sip of a bottle he was holding. "Nice left hook, by the way."
"Thanks these babies," Mara replied with a smirk while flexing.
Selinda and Lily looked at each other with knowing look and smirks before looking back at the two of them, eyes locked to each other.
"So what you got there?" Mara said while pointing to the bottle he was holding.
"Wanna try it?" He offered and without a second thought Mara grabbed the bottle and took a sip.
"Bitch, I barely feel a thing," She said with a smug smirk.
"Hey!" Hillary's voice echoed in the room. Everyone turned to see her and Brittany coming to them. Hillary's pace was faster. "What's going here?"
"Just talking with Josh," Mara said with annoyance, her attention now on the phone.
"Yeah, just talking." She said before turning to him. "How you doing Joshie?"
"I remember telling you not to call me that," he said turning around and taking another sip of his drink. "See ya later girls," he said before leaving, giving Mara one last look. She smirked back.
"He's not yours," Hillary said turning to Mara again once he was out of earshot.
"Yeah," Lily chimed in. "He's not anyone's." She and Selinda laughed.
Brittany chuckled while sitting besides Mara. "At least half the girls have been with him once, Hill," She said. "Me included. Don't waste time on claiming him."
"It was different with me. We did connect!"
Once again Lily and Selinda laughed.
"That why he's ignoring your ass like last week's trash?" Mara shot back, her Kansas accent shining through. Selinda and Lily broke out in laughter and even Brittany could not contain her own. "I mean boy is he talking to all the girl's he's fucked. Except you."
The slam on the table shut everyone up and all eyes were on Hillary. "Stay away from my man."
Mara did not back down. "Fu-"
"Enough!" Brittany's voice thundered and everyone froze. Rarely did Brittany ever raised her voice like this. She turned to Mara first. "Stop letting her goat you. Think for fucking once," she told her while nailing her finger into Mara's head. Her eyes snapped to Hillary. "He doesn't give two flying fucks about you, so shut up already about it."
"Sorry Britt," Both girls said almost at the same time. Mara slouched back on her phone while Hillary sat on the other side next to Brittany, eyes down.
Present - Pete's Diner
"The day Hillary Murdoch gets hit by a truck will be the day I fuck Josh Bender again," Mara said with cruel disdain, taking a bite out of her burger and savoring it.
"Maybe a couple days in a hospital would teach her a lesson," Kara replied with a half smile. As much as she hated Hillary and her ilk, she found it hard to express more hate than before.
"Fuck a hospital. She should drop dead," Mara shot back.
"Come on, Mar."
"Come on what, Kara?" Mara stopped eating. "Bitch deserves it more than anything. World is not gonna care if she dies tomorrow."
Kara struggled in her chair, suddenly feeling it squeezing her. "She is still a person."
"So what?"
Kara stopped short of saying anything else. The memory of Brittany's bloodied body in front of her bombards her, reminding her of what happens when she thinks just like Mara. When she actually does every single thing she feels. She enjoyed the moment. She enjoyed it very much. But ever since, there is a knot in her stomach, twisting and turning, a thought she dares not entertain. A truth she had refuced to face; she shouldn't have done that. Not because Brittany did not deserve every single painful strike that came her way, but because it fought against Kara's own being. There is something eating away at her about it and there is no one she can share it with. Not even her best friend. And now said best friend is expressing the same thing she felt all those months ago. "I don't want to argue, Mara," Kara finally said after an infinite pause.
Mara looked away, her own eyes betraying doubt before she shook her head and took another bite out of her burger. "You have no idea what these bitches were like," she said.
Kara's eyes snapped on her friend, a cold fury rising out of Kara's stomach straight into her heart. "I don't?" she wanted to stand up and slam the table to get Mara's attention. To remind her what Brittany and her clique did to Marcy. But instead she stuck sit. She did not want to go off on her, did not want to insult her. Kara was angry but for Mara Strong, she was willing to fight that anger down. "Did you forget what they did to Marcy?" she finally said.
Mara's eyes widened for a second before turning away. "I do," she muttered. "And they've done a lot worse."
"What else?" Kara's anger died down, replaced with morbid curiosity. To hear what other messed up things Brittany Morgan had done. But Mara shook her head and took another bite. Her heartbeat was fast. Too fast. Much faster than normal. Kara wanted to ask, to push until she said something. But whatever it was, it couldn't be worth grilling Mara over. She's made her point. There's no need for more arguments. Kara let out the breath she'd been holding back. "Can we not… argue anymore?" she said.
As if nothing happened, Mara swung her hair out of her face with a style only she knew how and the classic Mara Strong smirk appeared. "Oh I don't know. Your arguing face looks badass. People would not fuck with you if they saw it more often."
Kara did her best to hold back the chuckle, but it was too strong, too fast. "Pretty sure I did used to show it more often before and it did not do anything."
"That's cause you needed to punch someone."
If only I could, Kara thought to herself. Suddenly her phone rang.
"Who that?" Mara said with a full mouth.
Kara pulled her phone and said "Probably my parents. I got chores." As she hit the answering button nothing happened. The phone kept ringing but it did not answer. "I can't answer."
"Here, let me see," Mara said reaching out. As Kara handed it over, Mara pulled back and let it fall on the table with a yelp. "Fuck!" she yelled as the phone exploded in front of them, a small yellowish flame flashing before disappearing again.
"You girls alright?" Pete Rose said as he came running.
"Yeah," Kara replied.
"Shit was fucking hot, didn't you feel it?"
Kara looked at Mara with a confused look. No I did not feel it because my skin is indestructable, she thought to herself. But she settled for a shake of her head.
Flashback - A year ago - School
"So what you getting for the party," Selinda said as she, Lily and Mara walked through the hallway.
"You'd see it when you see it," Lily said with a smug smile.
"Sneaky bitch," Selinda replied and turned her sights on Mara. "What about you MMA girl? Got anything new for next week's party?"
"Gonna steal Lily's line," she replied with a softer less confident smirk.
"Oh, what are you hiding?"
"Nothing," Mara said with an annoyed tone. She did not want to say it. To admit her parents would not buy her shit for a party, let alone a swimsuit. But Josh did. And that's the last thing she wanted to admit to them right now.
"She's gonna steal the show, ain't she?" Lily added with a smirk. "I'll keep my phone ready for the grand reveal."
"You are going to be the death of me." Mara sighed and as if things could not get any worse, the shrieking voice of Hillary echoed in the hallway.
"Hey, you!"
"For fuck's sake, what is it now?" Mara said as she turned along with the other two. Hillary paced towards her, a desperate Brittany behind her, holding her arm and telling her something in the ear that Mara or anyone else could hear. But Hillary did not listen, ripping her arm out of Britt's grasp.
"You fucking dyke!" The gasps echoed all over the school as the sound of palm hitting skin echoed around them. Everyone's eyes were on them. Lily and Selinda, famous gossips, were not giggling or filming this as they ussually did and Brittany was close with eyes wide. "You fucked my man! You think you can steal him!"
So that's what this was about. The last thing Mara wanted anyone knowing and now Hillary just yelled it all over the school.
"Hill, that's enough," Brittany said, her voice more emotional and angry than anyone has heard her before. But her words are meaningless. Not to Hillary, but to Mara. As she turned back from the slap, her eyes focused, her left hand closed and with a boxer's stand, the blow came soon after.
Unlike Mara, who's head snapped back from the slap, Hillary fell down to the floor, screaming and sobbing, the force of the blow far more than what she ever thought. If she could think at all.
Once again, everyone gasped with an 'oh shit' escaping Lily's lips. Mara's rage lowered as she regained her thoughts and Brittany's look told her everything she needed to know. Oh no.
Mara sat on the rooftop of the school. It was almost night but she did not care. She raised a joint to her mouth as the roof door opened and closed behind her.
"Definitely need one of those," Brittany said as she stopped beside Mara.
"Get your own then," Mara shot back.
"Come on, Mara. Don't be like that."
"What!?" Mara yelled turning to Brittany. Mara's eyes were bloodshot, hair disheveled. "You fucked me over!"
"I could not do anything."
"Of course you fucking could."
"No I couldn't!" Brittany raised her voice in an uncharacteristic way. "Her parents are my parents' friends, they do business together. Why do you think I drag her around!"
"So you throw me under the bus for some fucking money shit." Mara shook her head and raised the joint to her lips again.
"Only for now."
"The fuck you mean now?"
"Just be patient. Second I'm an adult, I can do whatever the fuck I want, bringing you into mix included." Mara did not look at her, simply smoking the joint again. Brittany looked at her right arm, a fresh bruise. "That one is new."
"There's more under the shirt," Mara muttered.
"Smart one. Just like mine."
"Yeah. He knows where to hit. Only once in the face and coming up with an excuse in the hospital was hell."
At last Brittany's face fell cold, monotone, distant. Like a Robot she stared over Smallville. "One day, it'll be mine. Just you wait." She turned to Mara. "You just gotta be patient, Ubergirl." With a sinister smile, Brittany tapped Mara's shoulder and walked away, leaving her alone.
Present - Smallville Gazette - Lana Lang's office
Kara paced around the room as Lana finished writing something in her computer. "So you haven't found anything?" Kara said.
"Only what's on the official channels." Lana tapped ctrl s breathe a sigh. "Whatever else they got they are keeping it hidden."
"How do you know?"
"Because five of my contacts have said as much. The DEO has something but only the highest officers have access to it."
Kara sat down with a groan. "Why do they hide things like that!" She crossed her arms, glalring at nothing in particular.
"Governments do that sometimes."
"Not on Krypton they did."
Lana looked at her with a quizzical look. "You are sure about that?"
"Yes!" Kara snapped as if the question was out of place. "Krypton was not like earth. We trusted our people to always do the right thing. The council would never keep things from their people."
"Clark did not seemed that certain from what he has found."
"Kal was a baby. He never saw Krypton for what it really was."
Lana looked at Kara one more time. Breath in and out. In and out. With a soft look Lana smiled. "Ok. I'll take your word for it. I'm human, not from there."
Kara looked back for a second before taking a deeper breath in.
"By the way, I called you a couple of times but it send me to voicemail."
"Oh! Yeah. My phone exploded."
Lana opened her eyes wide for a second. "E… exploded?" Kara nodded. "How?"
Kara shrugged. "I don't know. It just did. Mara said it was hot before it did."
"Phones don't just…" Lana paused for a second before adding "…explode most of the time."
"Maybe it was old?"
Lana sighed. "I'll get you a new one. I know for a fact the Kents do not have the money to just buy a smartphone willy nilly."
"Thanks, but you don't have to."
"I kinda do. You are supergirl, remember?"
Kara opened her mouth for a second before closing it and nodding.
Kent Farm - Dusk
"Come inside when you are done," Johnathan said as he took his cap off and wiped sweat off. Kara looked at him with a look, paying close attention to his movements. With her X-ray she can see his muscles straining, his lungs doing their best to take in air and his heart beating faster to spread it around.
With a soft smile she said "Will do." One hay on each hand, she moved them across the barn and put them with the rest of the stash. One thing she had to thank the yellow sun of earth is that her chores are not as tiresome as the ones back on Krypton.
As she cleaned up her hands a low rumbling sound came on and she turned only for the sound to disappear. She looked at the barn closely for a second and turned away again, nothing to be seen nor heard.
Then the rumbling came on again. Kara turned at superspeed in time to see the tractor heading straight for head. The machine rammed into her as if it was hitting a brick wall, tearing itself apart until only the back half was left; and a very surprised Kara.
Hospital - Brittany Morgan's room
The nurses and doctors ran around the room like chickens without heads, the machines going crazy, electricity sapping everywhere.
"Someone bring in the IT guy!" one of the doctors yelled as he covered his head.
"We called but he's in Metropolis!" one of the nurses yelled back.
Suddenly a small blue shining figure appeared on the center of the room, above Brittany, eyes narrowed at the doctors before it smiled at them. It lifted its arms and and the room went silent. Everything went silent.
And everything was dark. "What happened?" One of them asked.
The main doctor turned the flashlight of his phone on and aimed it at the bed -it was empty. Then a breeze hit him and he turned around and saw it: a whole in the wall where the window used to be and the rest of Smallville in darkness.
Pete Rose's house
"What was that?" Sasha said as she picked up her crying daughter from her crib. One second they were in the living room watching a movie while the baby slept in her crib. The next everything went dark.
"Don't know, hon," Pete said while taking the flashlights from their emergency kit.
Belle Reve
"Somebody explain to me what just happened?" Hank yelled at his soldiers. "Someone turn on the emergency generators?"
"They are out too, dad," Nathan said with a terrified look in his face.
John Willis' Cell
John turned around looking for any lights, but his cell was pitch black. He did not understand what happened. Not until he felt a flick in his fingers. He raised his hands to see small sparks of electricity splashing out of his fingers. A small smile spread in his face.
Hillary 's bedroom
"What the fuck?" Hillary yelled. "Dad, what's going on?"
"Stay in your room baby, I'll turn on the generator," he replied.
Her phone ringed. It was a notification from an unknown number. One message. "Be a good girl, hang tight. 😉"
Josh's house
"Seriously?" Mara said with a groan.
"Seems like it," Josh answered her question without a hint of sarcasm.
"Yo, Josh! Your generator ain't working," Baran Flinder yelled, one of Josh's teammates.
"The hell you are talking about, that thing is full."
"Yeah it is, but it's not turning on!"
Josh and Mara looked at each other with a look of wonder.
Smallville Gazette
"Give me a break," Lana said with a groan as she tried turning on her laptop to no avail. Kara bursted through her office door, scaring Lana. "Jesus, Kara!"
"What just happened?" Kara said.
Lana shook her head. "I have no idea."
"All of Smallville is dark."
"A blackout I guess then."
"Something else happened right before it." Lana turned to her with curiosity.
"I was finishing my chores when the tractor suddenly turned on and rammed me."
"The Kent's tractor?" Kara nodded. "How? were the keys on it." Kara shook her head. "What happened to it?"
"What do you think?"
Ok, that is one thing I cannot help them replace, Thought Lana. "What the hell is going on?' As if to answer her question, her laptop turned on. "Oh finally!" But her relief was replaced with dread as all she saw was a smiling blue figure on the screen.
"Hey oldie. Pass me the blondie." The figure said. Lana hesitated. "I wasn't asking."
"Who are you?" Kara said, already by Lana's side.
"There you are. How you doing, Kara? Or do you prefer Supergirl?" Kara and Lana opened their eyes wide at that. Kara also noted a familiarity in the voice. But it was distorted. Not fully formed.
"Who are you?" Kara asked again with a darker tone.
"Oh you already forgot me? I'm hurt." The figure grew hair, it's features defined a bit closer to someone Kara knew. Someone she did not expect. "Come on, I want to hear the name," the figure said with a sinister smile and pit formed in Kara's stomach.
"Brittany," Kara muttered.
"What?" Lana said.
"Bingo, right on the nail, superbitch."
"You were one of the children… from the factory?" Kara said.
Brittany chuckled. "Yeah. It's great, don't you think? With powers like these, I can do a lot of damage. Starting with you."
"I can go to the hospital right now and stop you," Kara shot, her tone growing darker.
"Good luck, bitch. I got out of there when I threw the tractor at you. I knew it wasn't going to do anything but I'm a sucker for sending a message. Especially to you."
"Brittany, don't you dare-"
"I can dare to do whatever the fuck I want!" she yelled, the laptop suddenly exuding electricity. "And I'm going to hurt you where it hurts the most. I heard you hanging out with the baddest bitch in town." Kara opened her eyes wide. "Let's see how bad she is compared to me now."
No! "You leave her alo-" But the laptop was already off before she could finish.
"Kara what is going on?" Lana said behind her but Kara did not listen. She did not processed the question. Her mind focused on one thing. One name. One person. Mara! And flew out of there at superspeed.
Josh's house
"This gotta be a joke!" Selinda Flinders yelled as she sat slumped on the couch. "At least the phones are working."
"You ever been in a blackout?" Josh asked Mara as he ignored the rest of his complaining friends.
"Nope. Lived in Smallville my whole fucking life."
"I was in one once. Dad took us to a small town in an island somewhere. The grid exploded because of a fight between a villain and a hero. Whole island was in the dark for three days straight."
Mara groaned. "Hope that's not the case here. I like my AC thank you very much."
Josh chuckled. "Where's Kara, anyway?"
"She was going to finish some chores and come here. Don't know what is taking her so long."
"So you finally got someone else who tolerates your ass as much as me?"
Mara gave him a fake a laugh and added "More like we tolerate you!"
Josh put his hand on his chest with a pained look. "Ruthless, Strong," he said with a tone of sarcasm.
"You know me. I got no mercy in me," Mara replied with a smirk.
"Couldn't agree more," a third voice joined in and the two turned around to its source. It was the fridge. The fridge that was shaking and twisting behind them.
"What the hell?" Mara yelled as Josh put himself between her and it. The fridge twisted and turned, shaping it's body into something more humanoid. A monster of metal and plastic, with the fridge part where its stomach is. "Hey pretty boy. Still nailing those girls?" The creature said, a smirk forming in what passed for a face at the top.
"Britt?" Josh said in shock and the creature slapped him away.
"Josh!" Mara yelled before stepping back. She took a boxing stance and swung a blow at the creauture. Mara scream as her wrist gave away to the monster.
"Mara please, this is a robot. What did you expect?" It closed the distance between them and lowered its face to her. "You are not an Ubergirl yet, but I can help you with that."
Recognition flashed in Mara's face as she held her wounded arm.
"Now come with me. I made you a promise, remember?" Brittany said and grabbed Mara by the arm. Mara screamed and struggled but her strength did not compare to the robot and it dragged her away as the other party goers stared in fear.
Flashback - Past semester
Mara sat on the unfinished columns of the new City Hall. She was dressed in black, with a Jacket on top of a black t shirt with Jelly Bean's symbol; a circle with a red outline and the letters 'JB' in red in the center of it. She was smoking a joint as she always did when she wanted to escape the town. Escape the life. Escape her life.
"See you still use this place," Brittany said, finally reaching Mara's height after half an hour of climbing.
"What do you want, Britt?" Mara said without turning, eyes glued to the small town under her.
"Just want to talk. Can't a gal come see an old friend?"
"You abandoned me months ago for your stupid puppy."
"And I told you, I had to. I could not just go against my parents." Brittany stepped beside Mara and stretech out her hand. Mara scoffed but handed over the joint to the other girl. Brittany took a sip and moaned and let out smoke from her mouth. "This is why were such good friends. You always got the good shit," she said while handing over the joint to Mara.
"That why you are here? You can't get a new stash without me?" Mara said with an annoyed tone and took another taste of the joint.
"That and to make you an offer." Mara scoffed but made no attempt to stop her from talking. "You noticed that new emo girl in school?" Mara nodded. "What you think?"
"I think brunette is not her color."
Brittany chuckled while shaking her head. "I meant she's more your type."
"I don't care, Britt."
"You should."
"Why?"
"Because very soon she's gonna need a new friend. Her current one just pissed us off and we are going to teach her a lesson."
Mara scoffed again. "I'm not helping you."
"I'm not asking you to. I just want you to have a new tiny friend while the fire dies down. Once it does, you ditch her and come back to me."
"Why would I do that?"
"Because, silly, things are about to change in Smallville. New people will get power soon. And when that happens," she hooked one arm over Mara's shoulders and closed the distance, her mouth close to Mara's ear. "I can get you in on it. No more feeling powerless. You will stand over everyone else." Brittany pulled back and Mara finally turned to her with a confused look. "You just have to be a little more patient. Think about it, Ubergirl."
With that, Brittany walked away, leaving Mara with looking over Smallville, a red light shining over her black clothes and shining behind her.
