There is no Flash without Iris. There's no Barry without Iris. At least not as we know him. Barry is who he is--is a hero--in no small part because of Joe's influence. But it was Iris who befriended Barry first and was the reason Joe took Barry in. Without Iris, Barry is just some kid to Joe. Without Iris, Barry is put into the system, with all that grief and anger at not being believed re: the man in yellow.
Without Iris, Barry's grief would've swallowed him whole. Before she was his lightning rod, she was his rock. She's always been a part of him, and he's always loved her.
But it's not just that. When Barry gets his powers, it's Iris who creates the Flash in the public consciousness of Central City. It's her words that build the symbol of the Flash. Without Iris, The Flash is a metahuman operating outside the law, he's an overpowered vigilante with a God complex. But he's not a symbol for hope. Before she even knew the Flash was Barry, she made him a hero.
