Listen please don’t use the live action Mulan as some sort of female empowering celebration when the lead actress (and couple others from the cast) voiced their support to oppression and police brutality in Hong Kong, and don’t try to wave it off and defend her be like ‘oh she’s probably forced to say it you know..’ I don’t care. No one should be attacking her per say but it really doesn’t matter if she’s being ‘forced’ or not, the fact is that she said it, and oppression has become what she represents, as an actress, as the lead of a multimillion blockbuster movie. It’s unfortunate that a movie got dragged into politics but it is what it is now, and you can’t ignore it. China has used this movie as a mouthpiece, and stake their claim with their political agenda, they even have campaigns to support this movie to counteract the boycott. And Disney didn’t draw a line in the sand and make a statement be like what she said does not represent the movie it’s not what we stand for, because why would they, there’s a whole Chinese market out there they need appease. They wouldn’t say a thing because they want the Chinese money, they can have their Chinese money but are we really allowing them to have both ways, silencing on a basic human rights matter, enabling oppression to appease the Chinese then turn around and market it to us be like it’s just entertainment and hey Asian representations!! No. If there’s anything this movie represents, it’s oppression, white terror, one party dictatorship against their people, which ironically is what ‘Mulan’ supposed to stand against. Watch this movie if you want it’s your money, but don’t act like this movie is some sort of female celebration, students, young protesters in Hong Kong got beaten, shot at, tortured, even killed simply for fighting for their rights to express and for true democracy, what this actress represents and this movie in association, has nothing for you to celebrate.
