I think it's incredibly important to remember that bad people can still be likeable people. And that in fact, a lot of bad people are deliberately likeable, and use their likeability as armor.

It's harder to disagree with, or disapprove of, or convince other people that a likeable person is a bad one. It's so much easier to discredit your victims and sow doubt when everyone likes you.

I see a lot of media criticism of movies and tv shows at the moment, where people deem villains as 'too likeable' and 'too human' and 'its too hard to see him as a villain because of X and Y.'

And that is the whole fucking point.

Bad people often cloak themselves in likeability in order to escape the consequences of their actions and choices. Bad people are not always doing bad things 24/7.

bad people aren’t cloaking themselves in likability. it’s not in order to escape the consequences of their actions. sometimes it’s that, yeah. but most of the time they’re just likable. that’s just the way that they are.

people have this bad habit of confusing “i like this person” with “this person is good”. those are simply two completely unrelated things. the friend you had a falling out with after 10 years probably wasn’t secretly a terrible person the whole time.

likewise, people also confuse “i don’t like this person” with “this person is bad”. this should be obvious but a lot of people feel the need to justify them not liking someone. and you don’t gotta do that. sometimes you just don’t like someone, maybe even actively dislike them, and they’re perfectly fine

genuinely I'm so sick of people wanting all fiction to be ethical. can we all just get a little gross with it. the point of fiction is that it's not real. we can be unethical in fiction; same goes with being perverted with fiction, being unrealistic with fiction, and being grotesque with fiction. not all fiction has to be ethical, not every character has to be ethical, and that's okay. can we stop with the puritanism. be gross. be unrealistic. be whatever. if I don't like it it's not my business as long as we're all clear that its fictional.
