Rewatching the Chuuya 'drowns' scene just gets funnier and funnier now everything is over.

You have Chuuya, having to make a convincing display of being a vampire who's drowning- safe to say, he's not having a good day- and Dazai starts yapping about goodbyes.

But he has to keep up appearances.

He's drowning. He's a vampire.

And Dazai is still yapping.

And what's that? He's getting dangerously close to saying something genuine here.

So what does Chuuya do?

He says, "fuck that, I'm drowning harder" before Dazai can get another word in.

And that's so fucking funny to me.

He doesn't want to hear it Dazai! He needs you to turn the damn camera off so he can escape the water!

I just need confirmation that Akutagawa's ability is the reason behind his illness.

I need it like air!

Rashomon is a story about all the pieces of ourselves and others we will trade to survive. That we're all just animals when backed into a corner and if stealing the clothes of someone else's back would be enough to live another day, most people would take that chance.

Akutagawa has traded so much of himself. Made himself the rabid dog of the Port Mafia, gave all of himself to Dazai's training only to never be enough. You're telling me he wouldn't trade his very organs and health to keep fighting? To keep being allowed to living one day more? To see his sister smiling one more time?

Of course he would.

He didn't cough once when he was separated from Rashomon during Dead Apple, yet as soon as they're joined again, as soon as he forces Rashomon into the shape of his coat as it writhes and fights against him, he starts coughing again.

It would explain why he's able to do so much with his ability!

Why does Rashomon have so many forms? So much diversity to it's powers, when other abilities don't? Why does it's range feel so limitless when attached to Akutagawa, yet in Dead Apple, Akutagawa knows it's exact limits to stand just out of range?

Because he's feeding himself to Rashomon in exchange for the power. The same way Chuuya is consumed by Corruption during his singularity. So much power requires sacrifice.

Requires Akutagawa's flesh and blood.

That's why his health is so much worse after fights. The more he pushes Rashomon, the more he gives up.

And maybe Dazai knows that, maybe that's why he acknowledges he failed Akutagawa in Dark Era. That Oda would have been the mentor mentor, one who wouldn't have told Akutagawa to destroy himself. And that's why Dazai sends Akutagawa to Oda in Beast.
