I would pay SO much money to see someone edit a Merlin episode but from Arthur's perspective. Like we only see whatever it is Arthur sees cause I don't think this fandom understands how absolutely batshit insane Merlin was/is ad just how much he actually got away with Arthur was hella tolerant. (It's also funny just imagining it)
Here's one clip I found in case anyone's interested
the thing is in theory merlin and arthur should be very effective moral sounding boards for each other. merlin doesn’t give a single flying fuck about high society rules or like, the institution of laws, so he can much more easily point out to arthur when those constraints are unnecessarily preventing him from doing the right thing. arthur, while constrained by these rules, actually has a very strong moral compass and wants badly to be a good person, so he can compensate for the way merlin’s lack of a fuck to give occasionally extends to things that actually. matter. and in the beginning this bears out! in some ways this is the basis on which their relationship is built bc it’s what initially draws them together and makes them trust each other.
but the closer they get the more it falls apart bc by seasons 4/5 merlin doesn’t WANT to call things out for arthur, he just wants him to be happy and unburdened - this also drives him to start hiding things to the extent that arthur no longer knows enough to even try at being the moral compass here. meanwhile arthur hits a point where he’d forgive merlin for basically anything; he doesn’t even totally wanna know what merlin’s hiding bc that would mean he’d have to know what he’s willing to let slide to keep merlin in his life. even as they begin to trust each other unquestioningly and implicitly there remains a thread of uncertainty in their relationship that, paradoxically, means the closer they get the less they’re willing to push. if only they had fucked in season 3 maybe merlin would be less of a class traitor :(
