the most unrealistic part of solitaire by alice oseman was the fact that lucas ryan actually got the domain name ‘solitaire.co.uk’

i hate it how people criticize tori spring's characterization in solitaire, especially in the original version, when she's actually one of the most realistic teenage characters i've ever seen.

many teenagers in books either behave completely nonsensical considering their age or have an unrealistical amount of strengths that overshadow their negative personality traits.

tori, on the other hand, has a lot of flaws — her pessimistic attitude, which leads to self-destruction and constant stillness, her bitterness, and her habit of judging people too quickly. and some readers seem to disapprove a main character who has these flaws and call her unlikeable and far from reality for having them.

in my perspective, there is no character that portrays the way how your teenage years can be filled with rue, sorrow, and pain better than tori. she is realistic. most adolescents do not just get up after being neglected and ignored. and tori not only had to witness that and her brother's bullying and traumatic experiences — she also suffers from concerning mental health issues, which is a truthful response to the things she had to endure.

calling her unrealistic is like calling normal teenage behavior unrealistic because most of them do not socialize very often or find joy in things anymore. they have grown attached to their computers, writing, blogs, movies, and video games to hide from the real world that hurt them—just like tori did.

she's the perfect example of a character whose character development isn't changing her into a suddenly happy, forever grateful ray of sunshine only because of one moment where she decided that her friends and family were worth it. and some don't like to see a character fighting their mental illness without devolving into a cheery person.

the urge to reread solitaire book everytime i can sense fall & winter coming

Alice's books covers are the reason why you don't judge a book by its cover. It looks cute and tailored for a young audience, but it's anything but. The Osemanverse in my unsolicited opinion requires a level of emotional understanding and experience not usually associated with a YA audience. It's teen characters but it's something you read after you've passed that age, something that feels like "what was" not "what is". I can't really put it into words. But Alice's books are something I feel as an adult, it would not have felt like this if I read this when I was 14,16 or even 18. I have a 16 year old sister and I'm close friends with her friends and Oseman isn't something they'd appreciate as much as I have. Well, there's cultural differences and personal preferences involved so anyways. Also Alice's brilliant for writing Solitaire at such a young age. Now what to read next..... Loveless. 💜

Solitaire (by Alice Oseman) book details. mostly re: Nick and Charlie

I reread Solitaire after like 8 years (gosh!), thought it would be fun to note some details and differences between Solitaire (old, unrevised version) and Heartstopper (the series). just for funsies. I kinda gave up half way through though lol

In Solitaire Tori cut her hair in the summer before her Year 12. In the show she's already got short her in season 2/year 11

Charlie is said to have had piles of old things from his childhood that he couldn't let go because they had sentimental value. His parents stepped in and threw it out when he got sick. So he still had them when he met Nick.

Nick was the only one who visited Charlie in the hospital.

Ben transfered to Higgs for 6th form. All the girls love him there. Even Tori finds him attractive before she finds out that smth happened between him and Charlie and how awful of a person he actually is.

People at Truham love Charlie, generally

Charlie had attempted suicide "last year" by cutting his wrists. He had written tori a goodbye card.
