“White Liar” is a modern marvel, an important cultural artifact that must be preserved so that someday our descendants will know to mourn their calamitous misfortune in having been born to the wrong era, and a work of true and enduring art that should be playing on a loop in every room of the Met all day everyday for all of time because it includes the lines, “my cousin saw you on the street with a redhead named Bernice, turns out you don’t lie too well,” and that’s not even the best part of the song. Take down Mona Lisa and replace it with this image of Miranda Lambert smirking at the camera in a wedding dress, because it’s better and tells a more essential story about the human experience, and because the Mona Lisa is, like, dumb, tiny, and ugly anyway. The original, handwritten copy of the song is already on display in the Country Music Hall of Fame, but I want more.
I listen to this song on repeat more often, and for longer periods, than I do any other song, not just any Miranda Lambert song, but out of all the music that my brain and laptop can hold. It’s mostly the, charging, country-rock musical arrangement that allows the track to stay fresh even on binge listens. The verses are a little more sparse than your standard Miranda song, allowing the cartoonishly catchy chorus to take center stage, ensuring no attention is pulled from the way Miranda stretches the word liar out to three syllables and then luxuriates within them. “White Liar” is basically just a call-out song about a dude who has been macking it on everything with two legs and a skirt while his girl prepares for their wedding – Heeeeey, white liii-ii-aar. Truth comes out a little at a time. – but it’s better than that, because after two minutes and forty five seconds of thinly veiled disdain, and gesturing towards the threat of what’s in store for a cheating fiancé, it takes only two lines to pull off, with a high chin and a shrug, the reversal that turns the final minute and change into a victory dance.
Here’s a bombshell just for you
turns out I’ve been lying too
And then she makes out with the best man. Or maybe blows something up while wearing heels and giggling. Around the tenth listen these two conclusions seem equally plausible.
The “White Liar” video is my favorite Miranda Lambert video. It’s also, like, my favorite part about being alive, more or less. I like Cadbury creme eggs and the time of year when you can wear jean shorts and a sweater, too, but those are not pleasures one can keep with them all year. Her real dad walks her down the aisle and her mom is seated with the guests. Her dress is above-the-knee length and her earrings dangle. At the very beginning there are a few shots of some kids who look totally miserable to be at this outdoor wedding and I appreciate that a lot. The groom is the only one who ends up alone, and Miranda’s neat, but heavy eyeliner makes her eyes look even more angular, merciless, sharp, and when she smiles the effect of the whole thing seems more capable of killing a man than any gun. It’s, honestly, the best.
