Signs a Character Is Falling in Love
ෆ They Start Noticing the Small Things. The way the other person laughs. How they stir their coffee. The exact shape of their handwriting.
ෆ Hyper-Awareness of Touch. A brush of fingers becomes a full-body event. They replay it later. On loop.
ෆ They Look for Them First in a Room. Just a glance. A check. Not because they care. Obviously.
ෆ Jealousy They Can’t Explain. A spike of irritation when someone else makes them laugh. What’s that about? They don’t want to know.
ෆ Their Defenses Go Weird. More sarcasm. More teasing. Or less of everything. Silence, suddenly.
ෆ Uncharacteristic Generosity. Lending a book. Making a playlist. Bringing coffee “just because.” They’re not in love. They’re just nice.

Who Wear a Mask So Well, They’ve Forgotten Their Real Face
(The ones who are always what other people need and don’t know how to be anything else)
⛧ Mirrors the energy of whoever they’re talking to. You like jokes? They’re funny. You want quiet? They’re calm. You want deep? They’ve got metaphors. ⛧ Looks in the mirror and always thinks something feels… off. Like they’re wearing skin that isn’t quite theirs. ⛧ Doesn’t have favorite things, only the ones that make other people smile. ⛧ Says “no worries!” while bleeding out emotionally behind their back. ⛧ Knows exactly what to say to make someone feel seen, but has no idea how to ask for that in return. ⛧ When alone, they go silent. Like the absence of an audience erases the performance—and there’s nothing left. ⛧ Changes tone, style, even posture depending on who they’re with. ⛧ Has friends in every circle, but no one they call at 2am. ⛧ Desperately wants someone to look past the glitter and say: “You don’t have to do that. Who Would Die for Everyone but Don’t Think Anyone Would Mourn Them
(aka the quiet martyrs, the ones who love big but feel forgettable)

Always the one who stays behind to clean up. ⛧ Doesn't ask for favors—not because they don’t need them, but because they don’t believe they’re allowed to take up that kind of space. ⛧ When someone thanks them, they brush it off with “It was nothing.” ⛧ Treats their own pain like a footnote. (Yeah, I’m fine. Just tired.) ⛧ You could compliment them, and they’d smile, but their eyes would still say Why are you being so nice to me? ⛧ Constantly afraid of being annoying, even when they’ve barely spoken. ⛧ Hides their breakdowns by being “the responsible one.” Always smiling, always functional, quietly unraveling. ⛧ Finds comfort in tasks. Dishes. Errands. Anything that gives them purpose. ⛧ Would take a bullet for you and apologize for bleeding on your shirt. ⛧ Thinks no one really knows them, but blames themselves for that. ⛧ Their phone background is a quote that hurts. (“You are enough” makes them cry a little in the dark.) ⛧ If someone did tell them they matter, they’d cry, and then probably never believe it again.
Who Are So Emotionally Numb, They Don’t Realize They’re Already Breaking
(For when burnout becomes a personality trait and disassociation is just Tuesday)
⛧ Says “I don’t care” a lot. Usually means “I can’t afford to.” ⛧ Lives in a weird fog, can’t remember what they had for lunch or what day it is, but somehow still functioning. ⛧ Never first to speak in a group. Often doesn’t speak at all unless directly asked something. ⛧ Laughs at the right times. Smiles when expected. You wouldn’t know anything was wrong unless you really looked. ⛧ Hasn’t cried in a long time. Not because they’re fine, because they forgot how. ⛧ Avoids mirrors. They don’t recognize the person looking back. ⛧ Can’t get excited about anything anymore, but keeps pretending like they can. ⛧ Keeps busy to outrun the numbness. Lists, routines, always moving. ⛧ Their sleep is either 12 hours or none at all. No in-between. ⛧ Gets caught staring at nothing, often. Blames it on “spacing out.” They’re not. ⛧ Doesn’t think about the future. The idea of hope is exhausting. ⛧ Still shows up. Still tries. That might be the most heartbreaking thing of all.
When a Character Is Angry but Doesn’t Know Why
Not all rage is loud. Sometimes it simmers. Sometimes it sneaks in. Especially for characters who aren’t used to feeling things or grew up in environments where anger wasn’t safe to express. So when it starts showing up, they don’t even recognize it as anger. They just feel… off. Wrong. Tense.
✧ They get irritated by things that never used to bother them. The way someone chews. A clock ticking. The sound of their name. They can’t explain it, they just feel raw, like their skin doesn’t fit.
✧ They isolate, but don’t call it that. Suddenly, they’re “too tired” to go out. “Too busy” to reply. But really, they don’t trust themselves to be around people without snapping.
✧ They pick fights over things that don’t matter. Because it’s easier to yell about the dishes than admit they feel powerless, unworthy, or invisible.
✧ They can’t sit still. Pacing. Fidgeting. Restlessness that feels like there’s a wasp trapped under their skin and they can’t get it out.
✧ They joke, but it stings. Sarcasm that cuts a little too deep. “Just teasing” that leaves bruises. Humor becomes a weapon they don’t even realize they’re using.
✧ They blame themselves for feeling bad. Instead of thinking something is wrong, they think I’m wrong for feeling this way. The anger turns inward. Self-criticism sharpens.
✧ They can’t cry, and it scares them. They want to break. To feel something clean. But all they feel is the pressure building, and it doesn’t go anywhere.
✧ They eventually explode, and hate themselves for it. One wrong word and suddenly it’s fire. And after? Shame. Guilt. Confusion. Like, What was that? What’s wrong with me?
✧ Their anger isn’t just anger. It’s grief in disguise. That’s the twist. Most of the time, the anger is covering up a heartbreak they haven’t admitted yet.
✧ They’re not “bad” for being angry. They’re human. Write that. Let them be messy and let them feel without always knowing why.

That “God I wish I knew how to scream without breaking something” laugh. ☽ Gets weirdly emotional over small inconveniences. Burnt toast. Traffic. Missing socks. Not because of the thing—but because of everything. ☽ Hates being pitied more than being hated. ☽ Half the things they say sound sarcastic, even when they’re not trying to be. ☽ Walks too fast. Eats too fast. Always doing something like stillness might swallow them whole. ☽ Tells people “I’m just tired” when what they mean is “I don’t trust myself not to explode.” ☽ Picks fights with mirrors. Or themselves. ☽ Looks calm from a distance, but their energy feels like a storm about to break. ☽ The kind of person who storms out and comes back five minutes later because they weren’t done arguing with themselves.
Who Don’t Think They Deserve to Exist
(The “I’m fine, but I’m not supposed to be here” kind of characters. The ghost-in-their-own-body ones.)
☽ Flinches when praised. Freezes when complimented. Looks confused, like kindness is a foreign language they never learned. ☽ Keeps everything small. Their voice. Their handwriting. Their footprint in the world. ☽ Won’t ask for help, but apologizes for asking if they’re allowed to ask. ☽ Constantly feels like they’re taking up space they didn’t earn. Physically, emotionally, narratively. ☽ Will drop everything to take care of you—and absolutely cannot handle being taken care of in return. ☽ Fills silences with self-deprecation. Can’t stand being left alone with just their own breathing. ☽ Has entire imaginary conversations in their head about being a burden. Usually ends with them deciding to stay quiet. ☽ Smiles when they’re sad, because they’ve learned people like them better that way. ☽ Lives in survival mode, even in safe places. ☽ The kind of tired that isn’t fixed by sleep. The kind of ache that doesn’t bruise. ☽ Doesn’t think anyone would miss them if they left—but still shows up for everyone anyway. ☽ Would literally sacrifice themselves for someone else’s peace, and not tell anyone they were in pain while doing it.
Who Would Rather Self-Destruct Than Be Vulnerable
(You know the type. “I’m fine,” they say, while bleeding emotionally in six places and making it your fault.)
☽ Has a six-sense radar for emotional intimacy and bolts the second they feel it coming. ☽ Jokes about their trauma before anyone else can ask questions. ☽ Flirts like it’s war. Gets emotionally close like it’s a death sentence. ☽ Hates silence because it feels like it might start telling the truth. ☽ Master of the “accidental push away” (says things like “You don’t really care,” when what they mean is “Please prove me wrong.”) ☽ Would rather burn a bridge than admit they actually want you to cross it. ☽ Says “It’s not a big deal” about everything, even when it obviously is. ☽ Responds to “Are you okay?” with “Define okay.” ☽ Thinks vulnerability is weakness, but secretly craves someone who’ll stay after seeing the mess. ☽ Their love language is sabotage. Their defense mechanism is charisma. ☽ Will talk you through your emotional breakdown with terrifying clarity—and ghost you the second you ask how they’re doing. ☽ Would rather be hated for who they pretend to be than be hurt as who they really are.
When a Character Is Lonely but Doesn’t Know How to Say It
It’s not always visible. Sometimes they’re surrounded by people and still feel like they’re drowning in the silence between sentences.
⊹ They linger a little longer after conversations. Just in case someone notices.
⊹ They always ask “how are you?” but dodge it when it’s asked back.
⊹ They invite people to things... but laugh it off if no one shows. “I didn’t really care anyway.”
⊹ They scroll through old texts and consider replying. Don’t.
⊹ They talk to themselves. Out loud. Just to hear something.
⊹ Their smile is quick, but their eyes are slow. Tired. Watching.
⊹ They keep themselves busy. Loneliness echoes louder in stillness.
⊹ They volunteer. They help. They overgive, because maybe someone will need them enough to stay.
⊹ They laugh at inside jokes they weren’t there for.
⊹ They crave being chosen. They’ll never say that. But oh, how they ache for it.
Ways Your Character Might Test If They’re Truly Loved
✬ Pulling away to see if they’ll be followed.
✬ Pretending not to care and hoping someone notices.
✬ Saying something cruel just to see if the person stays.
✬ Hiding parts of themselves to see if they’re safe to reveal.
✬ Starting fights over nothing.
✬ Showing the worst parts first, just to get it over with.
✬ Rejecting compliments.
✬ Pretending they’re fine when they’re really not, and watching who pushes harder.
✬ Testing boundaries to see if they’ll be enforced with love or rejection.
✬ Going silent, hoping someone breaks the quiet.
✬ Minimizing their own needs to see if someone insists they deserve more.
✬ Giving too much, too fast, to see if they’re used.
✬ Opening up slowly and watching very closely.
✬ Acting like they don’t need help, and quietly hoping someone offers.
✬ Sabotaging good moments just to see if they’ll be forgiven.
✬ Disappearing for a while, then coming back to see if they were missed.
✬ Showing jealousy to see if the other person cares.
✬ Revealing old wounds to see how someone reacts.
✬ Saying “you deserve better” to see if the other person agrees.
✬ Waiting, always waiting, to be left.
Walking Style & Energy for Writers
Swaggering — Confident, maybe too confident; the walk of someone who knows they’re being watched. Shuffling — Tired, aimless, or just trying not to be noticed. Brisk — All business; fast, focused, not here for small talk. Limping — Physically injured… or emotionally carrying something too heavy. Floating — Graceful, soft-footed, almost dreamlike. Dragging feet — Reluctant, dreading something, or emotionally drained. Stomping — Angry, forceful, not subtle about it. Skipping — Childlike, carefree, or pretending to be. Sneaking — Quiet, calculated, trying not to disturb or be seen. Staggering — Drunk, wounded, or overwhelmed. Pacing — Anxious, indecisive, mind racing too fast to sit still. Marching — Determined, controlled, ready for a fight or a mission. Wandering — Lost in thought, aimless, or avoiding something. Swaying slightly — Nerves, exhaustion, or maybe something deeper.
