Hawaiian Style Cafe

So I went to Hawaii this past June and I for sure gained a couple of pounds there because the food was just awesome. Naturally, before travelling the first thing I do is search for places to eat. Home Style Cafe was not on my list, but a helpful lady from a car rental company suggested it when we arrived to Big Island. We followed her recommendation and was not disappointed! A bustling place on a Sunday morning, and filled with locals. This always gets me excited, because that’s when you know it’s good.

Their menu boasted a large selection of dishes, and if I lived there, I would probably make it a point to get every item on their menu because I wanted to try them all! Here’s a sample of a only a few of their offerings:

I got one of their house favourites which was Kalua Hash and OMG it is on top of my list of favourite dishes from Big Island. I wish I could go back right now…

Below is my mom’s dish. Definitely a dish that is for someone with a large appetite, it includes two eggs, a hamburger patty, chicken cutlet, and spam over a bed of fried rice.

If you ever visit Big Island definitely give this place a try.

The Q

I've been to The Q twice. The first time I went was for dinner, and while the food wasn't bad, it wasn't the greatest either. Nothing really special. The second time was for brunch. Having been there previously I was not expecting anything great. But I was pleasantly surprised as their brunch menu definitely exceeded my expectations. From innovative dishes like the apple stuffed french toast to your go-to breakfast favourites, The Q's brunch menu has what your stomach desires.

I got "Sarah's Poached Eggs Florentine" - it did not disappoint.

Two medium poached eggs with spinach, smoked salmon and of course Hollandaise sauce on an English muffin. Yum.

I went to Philly...

... except that was about a decade ago. But I did go to the I went to Philly restaurant in Toronto recently. 

The cheese steak: The Works (provolone, onions, mushrooms, green peppers and Whiz)

It definitely satisfied my cheese steak craving but i also def felt that I needed to work out for about a week after consuming all of that.

VANCOUVER. Can I go back, please??

I went to Vancouver in January for a week and I must have gained 10 lbs from that week alone because I ate SO MUCH. However, those were 10 lbs worth the gain. The food in Vancouver is amazing. Unfortunately, I didn't document the meals because I was too excited to get the awesome-ness into my belly. But what I do have is a pic from JAPADOG.

Easily top of my "Foods to try list", I went here twice during my visit. Hot dogs with a Japanese inspired twist. There are many options to choose from, and the staff were very friendly! Above is the Croquette and Aonori fries. JAPADOG, please come to Toronto!!

Another place you MUST try when you go to Vancouver: PEACEFUL RESTAURANT. I have never heard of this restaurant before, but one of my friends who has been there before was REALLY adamant about going there again. Literally, he talked about this restaurant from the moment we landed in Vancouver until we finally reached the restaurant on our second day. But he had reason. It centers on Northern Chinese cuisine and the dishes were rich in flavour. And THE MENU ITEM to try ....wait for it..... "PEACEFUL BEEF ROLL". Trust me. Try it. I can't even begin to explain how it tastes like, but there was definitely a sweetness to it that was unexpected but it complimented the savory beef really well.

Also, Guy Fieri featured this restaurant in Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives so you know it must have some mouth-watering dishes.

I went to LA recently, and here are some things I ate. More to come.

Potato Corner

Half BBQ + Sour Cream and Onion (My FAVORITE!), and half Cheddar on curly fries.

In-N-Out Burger

3 Cheeseburgers, cheesy fries, and animal style fries.

The cheese on the fries wasn't the nacho cheese I was expecting. It solidified once it cooled down. Was not a fan. The burgers were good though.

THE MAD COW!

Another visit to Holy Chuck calls for trying out a new burger.

Behold the Mad Cow. Starring a Jr. Cheeseburger and their "Animal Feed" which is basically a panko crusted portobello mushroom stuffed with feta and cream cheese. The feta and cream cheese gives a very rich flavour that may be a little over powering for some. It is messy to eat, but it's still damn delicious.

They SEA food differently. Red Lobster.

Actually not on my top list of restaurants, but sometimes I do get a craving to go here. Their commercials on television also played a part in this craving.

The legend of Zorro ... errr STEAK.

Is your mouth watering? Because mine is.

Medium and still ever so juicy.

If you are from the GTA I would recommend going to Zorro's Steak and Seafood House. A pretty pricey restaurant so be prepared to spend some money. The exterior of the restaurant doesn't look that appealing and it's location is not ideal, but it's interior has decor and an atmosphere that will take you back in time.

SCALLOPS all day

I rarely cook. Partially because I don't have time... but actually mostly because I is LAZY. But since my parents have gone to their motherland, I have been forced to fend for myself. I cooked some scallops the other night, and it was surprisingly really quick!

Last night's dinner:

Seared scallops tossed in a stir-fry with broccoli, mushrooms, and onions. Scallops were overcooked, and the broccoli was not as soft as I would like, but it was still OK!

Today's lunch:

Left over scallops with some snow peas and butter + garlic (I love love garlic!... every dish I have cooked in the entirety of my short cooking life has had garlic incorporated in it)

Famished Frog turns into whatwouldmaggieeat

OKAY LADIES AND GENTS (actually no one is probably reading this...but that's cool!),

Famished Frog is changing it's name to whatwouldmaggieeat!

Why the change?

All this while I thought Famished Frog was original, but alas it is not **insert an emoticon with the biggest frown here**. Famished Frog exists as a restaurant/bar/lounge in a far away land that is New Jersey. 

Why this new name?

I tweet/talk a lot about food and a while ago my friend started hashtagging whatwouldmaggieeat and/or WWME (for short) whenever she talked about food or food cravings. And hence the inspiration for this name.
