Willie Simmons has spent 38 years in prison for a $9 robbery. He had two prior convictions similar to robbery that he served time for. He was prosecuted under the Alabama Habitual Offender law and was given a life sentence for his third strike - stealing 9 (NINE) dollars. Sign his petition. 

Breonna Taylor was killed by police who were conducting an UNANNOUNCED drug raid, where they gave no request to enter. They bashed her door and entered, shooting her EIGHT times. They were in the WRONG HOUSE. 

George Floyd was killed by a police officer who knelt on his neck and suffocated him to death, after George pleaded with the officer and told him he couldn’t breathe. The officer had pulled him from where he sat in his car on an alleged FORGERY. You can also text “FLOYD” to 55156

ARREST THE OFFICERS WHO KILLED GEORGE FLOYD: The main police officer who murdered George is being kept in PROTECTIVE CUSTODY. You probably have heard he was arrested, but this is NOT TRUE. He was placed under PROTECTIVE custody because of the riots and “threats” on his life. 

If you know of ANY other organizations or petitions, PLEASE ADD TO THIS LIST. The fight for justice doesn’t end here, it will never end. Especially when the president of the United States calls white supremacists good people and protesters of a mans death THUGS. USE YOUR VOICE. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE. FUCK COPS. FUCK “BLUE LIVES”. the minnesota freedom fund is asking folks to donate to other organizations instead. the specific ones they listed are black visions, linked above, and these two:

northstar health collective, organized healthcare professionals working with anti-authoritarian groups

reclaim the block, a collective that aims to redistribute funding away from police and towards more community-oriented projects in minneapolis

these are the links i send to my facebook friends who keep running their mouths about “the protests hurting the community”

minnehaha food shelf & calvary church food shelf are both centered in the south minneapolis area where the riots started. the grocery stores in the area have been decimated, so food shelves and food insecurity charities need a lot of love right now.

northside funders group is a philanthropic group in the twin cities that’s using all its funds right now for helping local businesses

migizi is a native american media/history nonprofit whose office was destroyed in the riots

we love lake street is devoting funds specifically towards rebuilding the lake street area in south minneapolis

the healing justice foundation is a national nonprofit that’s specifically focusing on mental health resources for bipoc right now

ctul is a nonprofit focused on low-wage workers and workers rights in minnesota

mpd 150 is focused on policing and specifically trying to reroute the conversation from “we need to change police procedures” to “the police need structural reform”

the spiral collective is providing funds for supplies, medic kits, and other things that protesters will need on the ground

unicorn riot is a media collective that has had people on the ground filming every night in minneapolis

The Science of Roger Braddock

Science fiction is rarely scientific. As someone who’s going into astrophysics, I tried to add some science fact into Roger Braddock: Space Explorer, but given that this was supposed to be written by people in the early 1940s (when liquid-fuel rockets were considered the height of technological achievement and nuclear power was still, as far as most people knew, science fiction), there were some…challenges.

The Spaceship: In 1942, not even V-2 rockets existed yet. But even though it was still a relatively new field, it was becoming clear that rocketry was the way to get to outer space. So when you picture the Athena (Roger Braddock’s ship), picture something like the Saturn V (the rocket used for the Apollo missions in the 1960s) shown below:

The Laws of Physics: Force = mass times acceleration. We all learn that in high school physics. Some people (like me) feel dizzy just from being a car when someone floors the gas pedal. So accelerating a rocketship fast enough to travel slightly over 4 light years in about a week, like the Athena crew does…well, let’s just say it’d be a lot worse than a headache. So in order to prevent the crew from dying horribly just from the sheer force of acceleration, the Athena is outfitted with a device called an “intertia negator”. This completely made-up invention is something I’ll never describe in depth because I have no idea how it could possibly work (or if it would ever even be possible to build, even 250 years in the future), but it does exactly what the name implies: it negates inertia, allowing the crew to, in Eris’s words, “go from zero to oh-one in under ten seconds.” Without dying.

Gotta Go Fast: When discussing faster-than-light travel, the normal vocabulary used to describe speed - miles or kilometers per hour - becomes basically useless. Instead, the crew discusses speed in relation to the speed of light. “Oh-one,” for example, is shorthand for .01 lightspeed, or 1% lightspeed. (Which sounds slow, but it’s actually about 6.7 million miles per hour!)

WHEN in Rhapsody Schedule - Updated

From now on, WHEN will update on the first Saturday of the month from August through May. Because our first three episodes are already out, that means we’ll return from our hiatus with our fourth episode on November 2nd. From then on, we’ll update once a month until the end of season 1, take a break in June and July, and start season 2 in August of 2020.

We also now have a page here which lists all of our upload dates for the rest of season one.

Hello, Rhapsody - it’s been quite a while since we’ve released a new episode, hasn’t it? I first want to apologize for the delay and the lack of communication. College is turning out to be more...time-consuming than I expected. (Go ahead and laugh - it seems obvious in hindsight, but last summer I really did think making a podcast and getting an astronomy degree at the same time would work out well.)

Second, we’re still sorting out the details, but the big picture is that we’ll now be updating monthly from fall to spring as opposed to biweekly throughout the year. This gives us from about May to September or so to record and edit the show, and then while we share it with you all I can take the time to write the next batch of episodes (which, surprisingly, somehow seems to be one of the least time-consuming aspects of this project...or maybe that’s just because it’s my favorite. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

We’ll share the official schedule with you all once we make our final decision. Thank you all for sticking with us. We promise we’ll make it worth the wait!

Good evening, Rhapsody - it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I’m so sorry for the delay - we all have busy schedules, and sometimes they all just line up so that we can’t seem to get anything done! Thankfully, we’re back to making new episodes again, and our fourth episode is in the works. omg i apologize if this was sent in december and im just now seeing it but

i think they would all be extremely confused, but June and Leslie would kinda get into it and start dancing along a bit. Edna would probably be on the verge of a panic attack because what in the name of pete is going on here where is this sound coming from did someone break into the studio are they going to rob us are we going to get sued by village council oh no oh no oh no while Nancy, after the initial shock has worn off, returns to whatever she was doing beforehand like “you know what? this might as well just happen.”

Steve opens the front door to go over his segment for the week, sees the chaos, and just leaves without saying a word.

So, funny story - my laptop has picked up a fun new habit of crashing every other time I open Audacity. Needless to say, this is slowing down the editing process a bit. But on the plus side, classes were cancelled tomorrow due to the weather, so this will give me more time to hopefully get something done! I know it’s been a long time. Looking for an editor!

So, it's been awhile since we've released an episode. I realized though I've explained why on Twitter, I haven't done so on here yet. The reason our schedule kind of...vanished is because editing takes a LONG TIME. A very long time. Especially when you're a college student. And also the writer. And the social media manager.

Lately, I haven't been able to devote as much of my time to WHEN as I would like to. My hope is that once finals are over (mid-December), I'll have a lot of time to work on this podcast before the spring semester starts. But I still don't know if I can promise a regular new-episode-every-three-weeks schedule.

That's why I'm looking for someone to help me edit the podcast. I won't be able to pay you (like I said, I'm in college), but you WILL get:

CASTING CALL FOR “WHEN IN RHAPSODY”! [PODCAST]

To make a long story short: Unfortunately, the person who played Nancy Nguyen up until now will no longer be able to voice her. This is disappointing news, but we can’t dwell on that right now–we need to find someone new ASAP so we can get back to making new episodes of WHEN in Rhapsody. She is an important part of the cast and we can’t continue the series without her, so until this role is filled, there will be no more new episodes of WHEN.

Nancy is eighteen years old, a senior in high school, and Edna Beecher’s closest friend. She is energetic, creative, and often sarcastic, but underneath that sarcastic exterior she cares deeply for her friends.

As I mentioned when I first cast Nancy, she is Vietnamese, and I will therefore not cast anyone who is not Vietnamese/Southeast Asian. However, if you do fit that descriptor, and are interested in the role, please email [email protected].

In addition to re-casting Nancy, I’m also looking for people to voice two new minor roles: soldiers that Steve meets when he enlists. They’re both friendly, outgoing guys who really hate Nazis.
