Two years na mula grumaduate kami. In short, an image PUPians can smell 😆 (at PUP Linear Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDTNTcEnYMsyg4pOOlmgVQCuYOA5jY8ZLXuxlI0/?igshid=o7fve50c5y77
Performatura Festival 2019: Ang Mamatay Nang Dahil Sa’yo
It was through an invitation of a friend that I attended the Performatura Festival 2019: Ang Mamatay Nang Dahil Sa’yo”. It was supposed to be gathering with our college barkada, but I was the only one who came. Even though I only attended the last day, it was still a great experience of literary performances. My literary soul has been filled up again with knowledge and spirit from the program.
For the third day, they celebrated the works of National Artist for Literature, Edith L. Tiempo whose 100th birthday is on April 22. Friends of Mrs. Edith relived and brought her works to life through other forms of art such as contemporary dance, film, and singing.
The first activity I attended is the free screening of “A Nation is born” by Frederic Ullman, Jr., which is the first film that was shot in Dumaguete. After the screening, there was discussion about the film by Ed Cabagnot, a fellow from the Silliman National Writers Workshop.
The film was about the Philippines being “born” as a nation during the American Period. It showed how the Americans helped the Filipinos in learning and showed the lifestyle of Filipinos back then. During the movie, I just realized that it is propaganda in favour of the Americans. It’s as if they are the reason that Filipinos that time are having knowledge.
As Mr. Cabagnot discussed, a film is supposed to be of use to different things. Not only for entertainment but for propaganda also. It feeds us information and influences what our opinion must be.
After the film discussion, we attended a spoken word workshop with Azam Rais, champion of the Asia Pacific Poetry Slam held in Singapore.
Even though he is a champion from the said contest, I noticed how nervous he was before going on the stage. Then I realized that anybody experiences this, even winners. It is normal to get nervous. I can add that to my pep talk every time I get nervous haha.
Azam performed three poems. The first one was titled “Stutter” a story of his struggle when he was still suffering from his habit of stuttering. After the poem, he analysed the elements that he used. One of the words he used that I remember is “sibilance”. He uses this when referring to something bad or emphasizing feelings in his poems.
My favourite of his poems is titled “Whore” wherein he spoke to a prostitute that said something like this, “All of us are whores, and it just differs on which part we sell.”
The third poem that he performed was translated from Malay. That is one of the things I anticipated, Azam performing his poems in Malay. But since there is only small time left, he made it just quick so I was a bit sad. But all in all, it inspired me to make longer poems when I get the motivation again someday.
During the closing program for the Performatura 2019, they showcased the works of Edith L. Tiempo through contemporary dance and reciting her works. The three days of this festival showcased different talents of the Philippine Literature, showcasing their works and reliving their lives as poets.
Binondo: A Place to Experience China in Manila
Wandering in Binondo feels like roaming the streets of another Asian country. I cannot say China or Hongkong because I haven't been there, but there is the feeling of experiencing another culture when you're just really in another part of Manila.
It was my first time going to Binondo as an adult and I was excited because I've seen numerous photos from the place that looks like a scene from a movie. Dragon dances, Chinese businesses, food, and the people. But when I saw everything with my own eyes, the place really has a different feel. It seems like Binondo has its own filter that you will not need putting some in your photos anymore.
We came three days after the Chinese New Year. It is not crowded anymore as our friend said. As much as i want to witness the celebration of the Lunar New Year in Binondo, seeing the everyday life isn't bad. Store owners continued their business. Students going home after a long day in school. Locals who eat some food while having a break from work. It was very natural.
Of course, the experience won't be complete if we would not have a taste of Binondo on our stomachs. We bought a noodle mami, and Chinese fried rice. It really feels good eating authentic food from a restaurant who knows the Chinese cuisine.
Going to Binondo was nostalgic as I remember my mother buying medicines from drugstores there. I can remember the familiar scent of Ongpin St., a childhood that I want to go back to as we wander the streets of Manila Chinatown.
1. Give 3 examples of riddles with answer.
2. Look for the story of the dove and the ant.
“Neng, paano ba masesave itong kwento?
Happy father’s day sa inyo!
Places Where You Can Learn aside from the Four Corners of the Classroom
We are going to school to learn something our parents can’t teach us on their own. We pay for tuition and miscellaneous fees to provide us our needs in learning. But is everything can be learned inside the four corners of our classroom?
Well many of us are the kind of people who only knows two places, home and school. Sometimes, our parents won’t allow us to go even in field trips, which for our own safety also. But field trips aren’t the only places where you can learn outside the classroom, the world is very big to be explored and even in our neighborhood, you can find interesting things that will give you even a life lesson.
So, let’s start hunting places!
1. Inside the university
Aside from the library, other places outside the classroom can be a possible venue for learning.
Some universities have a museum inside. While on your vacant time, try to visit it. It will give you a privileged feeling for having a museum inside the school that you can just visit anytime. You can also review there before an exam instead of just reading it in a history book.
You can also have hands-on practice in photography in places just inside the university.
Or, photoshoots with your friends.
There are also various activities happening in your school, why not try to attend workshops?
2. Museums
Museums inside our schools aren’t enough for us to learn many things. In most field trips, museums are the number destination. But you can experience this also with your family. Family time and learning time can be a good combination. Especially now, that the National Museum doesn’t require fees for you to visit and see the beginnings of the country.
3. Intramuros
The walled city of Intramuros is very famous even in tourists. In this place, you can still picture the past through the architectural designs of the establishments. They also place information in front of ruined buildings helping us to see the past use of the building.
4. Cultural Center of the Philippines
The CCP holds annual festivals such as the Pasinaya festival to promote Filipino culture. Various acts and artworks are displayed that mirrors our culture.
5. Anywhere
The outside is the best place to find to yourself. You encounter things you didn’t even know that you’ll need to learn. our culture.
In everything you see, you can practice. Your creative self will emerge when you are in a place that you can feel you can be you, competing only with yourself. Inside the four corners of the classroom, you will learn only the technical, but outside, it is a vast space that you can fill with what you have learned. And this vast space can expand the lessons you have learned inside the school. So I encourage you to go out, (after class, of course) and apply what you have learned, then in return, you’ll go back with a double or even a hundred times of what you had from the four corners of the classroom.
A Bunny Night to Remember
“Dati, pangarap lang natin ‘to.” Alfdor told Benny, his younger brother who was performing at that time inside a small but happy place in The Collective, Makati. There was a free gig where bunnies hopped in through out the band’s sets.
It was called “Free Gig for EveryBunny”. BennyBunnyBand prepared for two sets that night not knowing that a new band will come up after their supposed to be last set.
As early as 5:30 pm, some bunnies are already in line to get a free shirt (which is for the first 5 to arrive). While the show will start at 9pm. Little by little, other bunnies arrived just in time before the show started. Actually, before going inside the bar, we were like people who are waiting for the concert venue to open to get the best views. But when all of us entered, everywhere seems to be a great view. With the intimate ambiance at Aloha Bar and Grill, there won’t be a left out.
When the bar opened at 9pm, everyone came inside, it was jam packed! The low temperature of the air conditioner didn’t work to accommodate more than 50 people inside Aloha.
I was assigned for the registration of everybunnies so every one passed by me. There was a group of people who are significant for me that night, a dad and his two daughters (they’re not the group who came from abroad). The other daughter was mentally challenged but they also waited just to watch BBB.
The band did an acoustic jam for the first set. Every song from their first EP, Nag[ma]mahal, BennyBunnyBand. Bunnies are calmly seated (some standing) as they watch them sang and tell the stories behind the songs in their album. The band wore their very comfy pambahay outfit for the night. Their slippers, shorts, and sando with the presence of EveryBunny made feel that I am at home, singing along and laughing at tito jokes with my brothers and sisters.
Their second set in full band contained news songs which will be released in their upcoming second album. I have listened to some songs months ago but I am still very excited for it to be released in an album cd. New songs that I’ve heard that night made me smile to know that they have been producing many songs, such talented people. The show was supposed to end at the second set but EveryBunny refused. I was also supposed to go home at 11 pm or not until the ukulele raffle was drawn (btw, I didn’t win, huhu). But I can’t just leave when the fun had just started. I can’t leave until I hop while singing I’m Coming.
As I had mentioned in the start, a new band had emerged and made the third set, the EveryBunnyBand!! Benny didn’t need to sing anymore because everybody was singing and we’ve owned the songs, hahahaha. Everyone was like Benny, who is while performing, his energy transferred to each of us that made us rocking until 1 am.
It was indeed a very memorable BennyBunnyBand gig that I’ve attended. They have owned the night. No other bands, just BBB, and it all made us a very happy bunny.
Special thanks to the following for making this gig happen:
and to Burn Mercado!!
