Katniss definitely didn’t stop being the pillar of the community after the war. It would take a while for her to come out of her depression shell of course, but the idea that she became a recluse after the war always bothers me.

Katniss was out here being the pillar of district 12 in middle school and was the MLK of Panem at 17 so the idea that she wouldn’t be able to be part of the community in times of peace is crazy.

Katniss definitely read to orphan kids and taught an archery class when someone asked. She definitely brought game to the hob the moment she was able to. You needed your driveway cleared, never fear! It’s the mockingjay with a shovel!

My only piece of advice to girls and young women is that you have to become financially independent no matter what it takes. Do whatever you need to do to become financially independent in this world and don’t ever let it go for anybody.

The thought occurred to me today, on the way back from preparing my classroom for my upcoming first school year as a teacher, that we will find purpose in life, great or small, sooner or later, that we will be seen and loved, there will be people who inspire us to do good. The world may feel cynical and hopeless but there will be people doing things small and great to help, to care, to mend. We must not lose hope.

We can be a part of this, we can do the small things, we can help, care, mend. Tutor children. Help a neighbor. Donate clothes, books, food. Check in on isolated friends. Show someone how to do something. Give someone directions on the street. Share a recipe of yours online. Volunteer to help in your city. There is so much that we can do to improve things even in times of political disaster, and it may not be big, but it will help. You will care. We will mend.
