I am a preschool teacher.

This is my “alone zone.”

At any time of the day, if my kids are feeling stressed, they can go here to cool down. There’s stress toys, silly putty, bubbles, sensory bottles…there’s books and headphones to block out the loud noises.

The only thing they have to do is “check in” by putting their picture on which emotion they’re feeling so I know how I can help them when they’re ready.

Kids. Need. Space.

Kids. Need. Coping. Mechanisms.

Not. Time-outs.

And the sooner we as adults teach them that, the better off they’ll be as they grow.

Punishing kids for expressing emotions is unhelpful at BEST. Help kids work through difficult feelings or give them a space to do so. I worked with kids. I had a situation with a kid who got angry at me when I took a book she and another kid were fighting over. Do you know what happened?

“Hey honey. Can we talk about what happened?”

*no response*

“I notice you look angry. Are you mad at me?”

*nod!*

“It’s okay to be mad at me. Do you know why I had to take the book away?”

*no*

“I was afraid it was going to get ripped in half. I’m not mad at you. Let’s sit here for a minute and cool down and then we’ll go and join the rest of the class.”

That right there was a Moment for her. She and I clicked really well after that because I validated her feelings! Getting mad at a child for getting mad only teaches them fear and avoidance. They are CHILDREN. They have to learn! They can’t learn how to deal with strong emotions if they aren’t exposed to another person properly modeling those emotions. Be patient.

The best part is this isn’t just Terry fucking with Joker, Terry realized after bats told him “Joker likes to talk” that he likes to talk too. So he decided to answer joker back with something Joker was never expecting. Joker could easily deal with the typical hero “you won’t get away with this” talk or someone being absolutely quiet. But mockery? taking the piss? Telling joker straight up “you ain’t shit?”
