WhiteSmoke143 is a Roleplay blog for Du Ruo from Path to Nowhere.
This account is a sub-blog of @PandorasCage (multi-muse RPer) -- so if you get a follow from PandorasCage, that's me!
Du Ruo's portrayal is fairly canon-based, but I welcome canon-divergence (since PTN can be challenging to navigate without that!) -- Ruo is slightly challenging just because she's typically stationed in Eastia, but I HC her showing up with the Eastians that attend the Great Expo so I can have at least 2 points in time where she's at the MBCC. Might have her just show up at nebulous periods of time and pretend it makes sense.
Matureย & dark themes will be present on this blog.
Du Ruo's history is quite tragic, and the themes in PTN are very specifically dark and frequently cosmic horror. So it goes~
Also, of note, sometimes I play her ability as hinting towards opiate adjacent pain relief. This is because that is the typical pain-treatment for burn injuries, and if she uses her ability twice it kills the Sinner.
It's its own thing, but given the epidemic, please tell me if you'd like me to steer clear of that (and I'll usually check in with folks anyways)
"#๐โโบโโ โโโ ฮดั แฉัo | cw" for common trigger warnings.

Why I think Du Ruo & Yugu should hate fuck at least once
Hear me out. There is yuri potential here. It could be toxic, it could be a love-hate thing, it could be a secret third thingโI just know that there is something going on inbetween these two women sharing different sides of the same coin.
I, personally, find it disappointing that Du Ruo and Yugu haven't interacted in 'Veiled in Violet Vagary' (2.5 anni) and only indirectly once. With Du Ruo being asked by the MBCC to research about what is going on in the fete and its history, while the latter offhandedly mentioned Du Ruo (not even by name) when she was confronted by Chief in the third act. While I get that it wouldn't really make sense story wise to have Du Ruo fully there since she wasn't necessarily needed in the event, I just find it disappointing that they could've at least interacted directly in supervision events if not in Violet Vagary.
I checked both of their supervision events to make sure and there is nothing going on between them in the Bureau. I'm literally grasping at one single crumb (it's not even a crumb, to be honest) and a bunch of crack theories, some info from their Sinner profile, and personal headcanons, and if I manage to spark some interest on why this crack ship matters like cinnazoya, shindreya (I will make a thesis about them one day), rahulevenangell, vateurfano, or jelefano (god bless old women yuri on the latter two), then I would be very happy that I'm not sailing this ship alone and I will genuinely welcome you into the insanity.
For all Sinner related info, I'm using S1n.gg for ease of access to those who wish to follow along.
Oomf mention (@mercifuldusk) because you need to hear my madness too.
Let's set down the basic foundation first:
Du Ruo is a literary scholar, always searching for the truth and historical context of literature (myths) and of what really happened in the ten-sun calamity.
Yugu is a storyteller, who tends to dramatize and exaggerate retellings of the horrors of others that she's witnessed just to make an interesting story.
I just know Du Ruo would be so pissed at Yugu for not only exaggerating her stories and twisting the truth, but also gleefully retelling stories of tragedy. As a scholar, she would want to rebut the bs Yugu spouts from her mouth, but seeing that a lot of Sinners in the Bureau enjoy Yugu's stories the rebuttals are almost always ignored, dismissed, or even be called dramatic from some Sinners (similar to what happened with her time with Xu, but that's a whole different story altogether because at least Xu lies to comfort and reassure the people in their village in times of hardship and great difficulty. Yugu's lying just for the shits and giggles because "the misery of others is so fascinating *smiles*" according to her interrogation).
Yugu, meanwhile, ever the sadist, would find utter joy at seeing Du Ruo so pissed off at her and would just continue doing what she's doing even harder. It's even come to a point, I believe, that Yugu would include Du Ruo in her stories as a character, usually as a protagonist. Of course, Yugu wouldn't name drop Du Ruo directly, but the latter's smart enough to put two and two together and gets double pissed off at the fact that now she's in Yugu's bs stories as a caricature.
Another point I'd like to pull is that they're both writers though in very different directions.
Du Ruo, according to her Supervision Event 5 (My Path, Alone but Not Lonely) and Serving Term 4, she's writing a book. In her Supervision Event 5, it's revealed that she's writing about her professional life as a scholar in DisCity, which is revealed to be trivial facts and how-to's in DisCity etiquette and culture, household appliance instructions, public transportation etc,. For the scholars that will come after her, she explains if you choose to ask why she's writing this. In Serving Term 4, before leaving to go back to Eastia, she gave Chief an unfinished copy of DisCity Mythical Notes, promising Chief that she'll continue writing it upon her return. From this, we can assume this book is the one she's writing from her Supervision Event 5.
Yugu, well, it's already obvious because she is a storyteller. If you've played Violet Vagary, it's stated that she's writing a series of tragedies (and smut because of course and she's an utter freak), with the recent volume she's writing being about what happened in DisCity and the fete that nearly destroyed it. But if you want something to hammer this fact about her being a writer even harder, in Yugu's Serving Term 4 it's stated that she's writing down a compilation of stories she's collected and her travelling experience into volumes, though we can assume that it would be mildly exaggerated and dramatized, knowing who she is, since the first volume is about a "storyteller leaving her home" and she plans to chronicle everything until she dies. Going off this fact, in her Supervision Event 2 (The Anonymous Donor), it's said that someone has donated volumes of a series named Eastian Folktales and since it was mentioned that Yugu compiles stories she's collected into volumes, we can only assume that she's the one who not just donated them, but also the one responsible for having compiled said folktales.
I can imagine a scenario after Yugu's Supervision Event 2 that Chief calls Du Ruo to help look through the Eastian Folktales series to get a second opinion if the folktales are, well, genuine folktales. Du Ruo, of course agrees, because I'm sure she would love to read some genuine folklore by people all over Eastia and learn about why they believe such things along the way. Then the first folktale is a tragedy, then second one, then the third, then the fourthโand Du Ruo is both intrigued by why different people would believe in such tragedies (as a warning, maybe, about not doing this thing to avoid that thing? That's common, even in places that aren't in Eastia, right?), and also confused on why all the volumes only hold tragic folktales. It wouldn't be until some time later that it was eventually found out that Yugu was the one who donated and compiled those tales, and Du Ruo couldn't help but feel disgusted for even finding intrigue in them in the first place and also question if the folktales she's read are even true, now knowing that Yugu was the one who was responsible.
I think one last fact that ties them both together is that they're also both storytellers.
Yugu's already a given. Her whole character revolves being a storyteller after all. However, it's a lesser known fact for Du Ruo.
While not much and not a prominent fact of her character, in her Serving Term 3 it's mentioned that Du Ruo tells Eastian myths when approached by Sinners, resulting in the younger ones eagerly coming up to her just to listen to the myths.
Yugu could be passing by the Recreation Room one day, heading to the library as per usual, only to stop upon hearing a recounting of an Eastian myth. Upon walking back to see, she's unsurprised to see Du Ruo being the one responsible, being surrounded by eager young Sinners and a few curious adult ones standing by the side. After the myth retelling(s) because I have a feeling some younger Sinners would ask for a handful Eastian myths for Du Ruo to retell (probably OwO for some dancing lion related ones), Yugu approaches Du Ruo to compliment her on her retellings.
"Almost as good as me," Yugu cheekily states with a matching smile slightly obscured behind her veil. "You should try retelling some of the folktales I've compiled. I'm sure you'll do a fine job with them as well."
Meanwhile, Du Ruo only holds an impassive expression, and yet her voice betrays her annoyance at the other woman.
"I'd rather not, thank you," Du Ruo grits through a calm smile.
Yugu has the gall to pout. "Shame. I would've love to hear your interpretation of the stories there, dear scholar."
Du Ruo doesn't comment on it, though her tranquility has completely soured after her brief interaction with Yugu.
One last proposal is the fact both women use incense. Well, Du Ruo more so makes incense (Supervision Event 4: The Impression of DisCity), and Yugu has been recorded to use incense while reading (Supervision Event 6: Unusual Tear-Jerking Criteria). I might be grasping at straws at this point, HOWEVER, I would like to propose the idea that while Du Ruo absolutely hates Yugu's guts for being a chronic liar for the teehees and hahas, she does appreciate the fact that Yugu is an incense enjoyer. Maybe Yugu requests Du Ruo to make specific scents for whatever story she'll read for the immersion or whatever. Du Ruo, of course, would begrudgingly accept the requests each time because while she hates making a scent that evokes terror of all things, I have a feeling that even she'll be curious to know what that smells like. Because if she can make a scent that evokes DisCity, making a scent akin to terror should be easy (it was, in fact, not easy though Yugu would be amused to find out Du Ruo struggled to make the incense she requested for. Perhaps Yugu made those requests specifically just to watch Du Ruo squirm).
Du Ruo wants to distance herself from Yugu because of who she is and what she's doing as a storyteller is a spit to the face of Du Ruo's responsibility as a literary scholar, but the latter keeps coming to her and she doesn't know why she even lets Yugu into her life in the first place. Maybe, deep down, she's curious to see what madness Yugu will tell. Yugu, meanwhile, keeps coming back because she finds Du Ruo's utter spite for her to be very amusing, and she enjoys seeing the ever tranquil and calm scholar lose her shit whenever she gets close.
Never let them share the same room, because whatever tension they both have going on might burst into something Du Ruo will regret when she's sober and Yugu will find extremely funny (and inspiration for her future smut work).
ย ย ย ย ย IT'S REFRESHING, HAVING HER PORTENTS MET WITH SOME MANNER OF RESPECT. ย ย much of the mbcc staff dismisses them as the superstitions of a foreign quack doctor, even if some are polite enough to humor her warnings. for that reason wuhuanzi often takes it upon herself to keep to her own quarters; if others will not keep their distance, she might at least be certain of her own.
โ i see. it's a pleasure to meet you, du ruo. i haven't seen met anyone from eastia apart from the other seers here for... a while. โ
granted du ruo's grace, her demeanor visibly eases somewhat. wuhuanzi pulls her gaze up from the floor. soft-spoken as she may be, she bears the steadiness of someone who's traveled far, and traveled alone.
โ i was detained not long after the incident with the fรชte and the wisteria tree. supposedly, it is because i was practicing medicine without a licensed sanctioned by discity. but i assure you that i've committed no malpractice. โ
in truth, something about it has always struck her as odd โ or at least not entirely honest. chief, she believes, is an earnest and kindly person. it's part of why she accepted her arrest without protest, and why she hasn't bothered to press the issue aloud. but du ruo, who shares her homeland, will almost certainly understand her perspective.
โ ... i must admit, though, that it feels... petty. or perhaps like a formality. if my credentials were a concern, i would imagine there would be some path for me to obtain them and correct this supposed wrong, but none has been offered. i am sure that i'm here simply because i am what they refer to as a 'sinner'. โ resignation settling in, she sighs. โ it's par the course with my luck, i suppose. โ
โฏ | The pen movedย in delicate, short strokes. Masterfully painting words into pictures, giving form to this report in lines few Disians could make sense of. Though it wouldn't spare her words from the scrutiny of the ninth, it did at least leave a barrier in the way ofย some. It meant only those clever enough could ascertain information readily...
Pausing her notetaking, Ruo lifted a finger. The curled digit tapping against her lips in contemplation. Truly, the statement only confirmed her suspicions... the roots of DisCity's seeds of ditsturst dug deep, thirsting only for poisoned water, rotting itself from the inside out.
They fear seers, is what she wanted to say... but such a bold statement stayed carefully restrained. This matter needed a measured amount of caution; and while the scholar was a playful woman by nature, in this matter, she was quite strict. Eastians weren't allowed a misstep, not here... not on this blood-soaked-soil.
It was a loaded question, asked with a practiced innocence and delicate air. Devoid of evidence of the accusation that sat between the carefully chosen words.
Alright, time to share my red-string-conspiracy about Ruo's Sinner ability.
Her ability is not the resurrection/healing itself, but the ability to imbue relic-objects with the power of belief of a myth.
Hear me out...
The official description is just this:
Ability Summary: A ritual is performed to recall the diffused vitality in the world and reinfuse it into a designatedย container, bringing about aย revivalย of sorts.
Evidence 1: The Boshanlu
Now, if we go back to reireidotwit's post where it discusses the "hill censer" or "boshanlu", an object that appeared in history (in PTN verse, "Eastian" history) with mythos of gaining immortality through the smoke that resembles mist.
This does sort of describe her main "weapon" perfectly. She also wouldn't be (theoretically) the only Sinner who's abilities aren't clearly shown in their battle mechanics. Shalom uses Schorl, but clearly has a whole lot going on other than just Schorl's hypercube lasers.
And there's a lot I have to wonder about in relation to Ruo's ECB art.
Evidence 2: The Sun Shot
Ruo's firing of the sun-shot was arguably when her power awoke. Most Sinner powers relate to some sort of traumatic event/high emotion event + high doses of mania.
The fact Ruo refused to give specifics furthers my case.
Awakening Signs: The subject claims to have sustained a disaster in an Eastian city, which awakened her ability. Further investigation is required to obtain the specifics.
The Sun Shot is her imbuing that arrow with her belief in Xu and the people's belief in the myth of the legendary bow.
She also touches Chief when they are firing the shot. DisCity believed in Chief more than anything Eastia had to offer.
Evidence 3: The Compass
In her interrogation, Ruo uses a compass to mask herself from detection. Even from Chief's shackles.
Granted, this one could just be Eastian Sorcery which we do not know a lot about. There's Underground Sorcery that hides locations (ie seen in Flora Unfurl etc)
However, the fact a compass is involved makes me suspicious? But I'm not versed in Chinese myths to recognize if there's a real-life compass myth.
Evidence 4: Eternal Nightmare
My final piece of evidence comes from the Eternal nightmare and Ruo's "Nightmare Talent"
In which she grants you a random imprint when she joins the team. Which, if I connect my red strings...
Gives you an item that manifests on the field.
Granted, and this is why I say red-string-conspiracy, there are actual relics in Eternal Nightmare... so this might just be a reference to Eastian/Underground Sorcery where you can summon things out of the void with a sigil.
The latter is more likely, however, the rest of my case remains!
Final Notes!
Why the FUCK does she FLOAT EVERYTHING?
WHY DOES NO ONE IN THE PTN UNIVERSE CARE SHE CAN LEVITATE THINGS?
ย ย ย ย ย SHE'S FROM EASTIA. ย wuhuanzi can tell as much at a glance, that sense of familiarity that comes with seeing someone else who shares one's origins. she watches quietly as the mbcc staff guides the older woman to her quarters โ cell, technically, but she's been allowed the small mercy of some decor: a few books on contemporary medicine, blank talismans awaiting inscriptions, and a handful of herbs that had been closely scrutinized before being allowed into her possession. her travel pack has a new home on the floor by her bed, and some charms futilely meant to ward off her ill fortune cling to each junction of the walls. for all that, her quarters remain plain โ wuhuanzi has never been lavish.
โ ... that's me. i'm wuhuanzi. โ a soft-spoken affirmation. her gaze drifts briefly, following the staffers as they step aside before blinking back to attention. this woman has the bearing of someone important. she recalls mention of chief having sought the insight of someone from eastia during the incident of the fรชte; perhaps this is her.
she'd heard about the ten-suns calamity that nearly razed discity some time ago, and by extension she knows, in passing, about the eastian delegation. eastians are rare enough here that some people can't help but ask 'if she knows anyone in it' or even 'if she was there'. they're absurd questions, ones she's sure are never asked of disians, but she's always sighed and let it be.
however, this is no random eastian woman, and she walks through the bureau too deliberately to be a new face to it. wuhuanzi feels cautiously secure in putting two and two together.
โ ah, you should stay on that side of the threshold. โ she speaks up again, tone still mild, when it seems like du ruo is about to move to enter. โ the omens for today are not good ... but you should be spared from misfortune if you keep a little space. โ
โฏ | The delicate billow of her silk garments flowed as easily as the faint smoke from her incense burner, a boshanlu. It floated along beside her like a ghost, usually amused that no one ever seemed to question this ability of hers -- today, she was too focused on the task at hand to busy herself with such idle enjoyments.
Still, as her light footsteps came to a halt outside the younger Seer's quarters, her expression softened considerably. Her feet stopping dutifully just against the threshold of Wuhuanzi's room as she was warned of the misfortune awaiting her if she passed it.
Ruo spared a glance towards the staff as they begrudgingly trailed down the corridor, before turning her full attention back to her fellow kin now trapped in this foreign land. Relaxing enough to even show the jade hue of her gaze.
Her smile broadened, her voice gentle, giving a deep bow before gingerly lowering herself to a steat on her knees, careful not to let even a strand of thread from her clothes slip past the barrier the little healer had requested.
Living by such rules was simply commonplace, it was barely worth a second thought. They lacked the hypercubes available to the rest of the world, and had to live by stringent measures to ward off mania. Though Disians still scoffed at their practices, Eastia was still around for a reason.
โฏ | Eastian Envoy -- her official title in Dis. Lauded with praise and respect on the surface, and mired with a slog of distrust under the seemingly placid waters. Though she'd provided council to the city's favorite hound time and time again; for the Sun Crow, for the little Yao, for the crisis caused by Yugu's stories and the Wisteria tree... she still wasn't trusted.
The tug of the shackles on her mind and soul did seem to soothe the wounded egos and pride of the Outlands Affairs Bureau, that frequently went out the window every time she showed up on the city's doorstep without alerting any of their typical precautions against Outlanders. With a compass tucked in her pocket, she'd managed to make it quite far into the city before being picked up.ย
Of course she smiled gently, kept her enlightened demeanor all the way to the MBCC's doorstep. Some nonsense about 'new Sinner registration protocols' spat at her on the way. 'You understand'.
"๐๐ ๐๐๐ข๐๐ ๐. ๐ผ ๐ข๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ก๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐๐๐ฆ."ย She did... just, not in the way she was implying. She understood they were cowards who feared Seers-- no, Sinners,ย and more to the point... Outlanders. Her words were slow and rhythmic, meant to lull others into a false sense of security. Even such distrustful, xenophobic men, could be soothed in such a way. It wouldn't erase their hatred, but... they were oh so quick to believe such a delicate Eastian woman would be easily dominated.
Still, she wasn't here for them. Not even here for the Eastian alliance, not entirely anyways. She'd come to see a particular Seer that was being detained without the Eastian delegation's approval-- heavens knew such an action from Eastia to a Sinner from Dis would have had a certain set of people breathing down her neck... But she was here to offer some grace and peace.
She entered the Bureau, trading Disian public officials for MBCC staff-- a welcome releif.ย Ruo gave a gentle bow in greeting,ย "๐ผ'๐ โ๐๐๐ ๐ก๐ ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ขโ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐."ย her narrow gaze hiding her eyes from sight, but still keeping a wary lookout as she ignored the fact she'd been told she was being taken to the Bureau for "Advanced Sinner Registration Protocols."
Du Ruo, what are some of your favourite things about DIScity?
โDis is a marvel of human spiritโฆ A myth unto itselfโฆ Buildings as tall as mountains, hope shining against a sea of despair. My favorite thing must certainly be the fool who protects it all."
#Goals to have Ruo and Donald somehow end up talking about their tragic doomed-romances that ended with them not confessing before their love got consumed by an eldritch being that then stole their face.
I don't know how you casually get to that topic of conversation, but, I need it.
I'm hitting dead end so i'll just post everything i found about Du Ruo's image
Du Ruo's "weapon" is a Hill Censer/Boshanlu. First appearing in Western Han period. Like what the name describe, its lid will depict the mountains where the immortals live, you can pic 3 for a more detailed description.
Interestingly, only in the Han Dynasty that boshanlu are made of copper (which i think is the ones Du Ruo's is based on). In later periods they are usually ceramic. I only found few pics of boshanlu with a bird motif on top, sadly there is not much detail about these particular boshanlu:
Next, we have this mysterious woman behinds Du Ruo in the visual art. She has a very particular hairstyle cause she wears it down + the hair accesory sticking out. It's the same characteristics as early Western Han women's hairstyles, women in later periods mostly wore their hair up in buns or loop:
So these 2 details show that the new event is referring the Han Dynasty quite a bit, but it's not guarantee that all details in the event are. But that was what i was mostly focusing on searching since it's easier ๐
Du Ruo's accessories have this green tint making it looks like oxidized copper or silver w/ green tarnish (I think necklace is silver while the rest is copper)
Copper was also a common material during the Western Han period, most of the artifacts i found are either copper or jade. (You can check out the Palace Museum's collection or Xuzhou Museum, Hunan Museum)
Next is Du Ruo's blue shirt, this is a very big guessing on my part but it could be referencing the Han blue/Chinese blue pigment.
In pic 4, it's used to paint a Golden/Three-legged crow in a tomb mural (couldn't find much more detail unfortunately, it seems the tomb may be closed due to safety reasons)
BUT during the Han Dynasty, the blue color doesn't hold a significant meaning (Black & Red was the royal color) unlike the Qing Dynasty and the most prized blue in this period is Lapis Lazuli. It represents the Sky or the Heaven, and that matches with Du Ruo's "immortal" vibe
Plus some lapis lazuli sculptures have big piece of inclusions, making it have a blue to white gradient just like Du Ruo's shirt.
Some sites says lapis is used in Western Han period as well, as paint on mural or made into beads but i couldn't find an actual source for it. I did found artifacts that are painted with Han blue though.
And the biggest mysterious i can't figure out is the patterns on Du Ruo's jacket. I have looked at potentially every common patterns used in fabric (link 1, link 2) & in carvings (link 1, link 2, link 3 and a good video) during Han Dynasty, none of it looks similar.
Tbh it looks like a scanned artifact that has been made into a makeshift pattern rather than a real pattern.
From what i see, there's 2 kind of patterns. One is this square with V-shape details: Left & right sides can be seen in the 2 big pieces and in the smaller pic is what could be the pattern's middle part:
And the other pattern is this S shaped one that's overlapped with the above. It kinda looks like a cloud thunder pattern ไบ้ท็บน (fig 1). It being cloud (representing the heaven) also matches with Du Ruo's immortal image.
So either it's a makeshift pattern from a real artifact or a pattern from another time period or maybe it's even supposed to be a hanzi character. I really want a clear look of it...
It could be small part of this kind of repeat tile pattern as well:
Lastly, this is a big speculation on my part but i wonder if Du Ruo's jacket actually belongs to someone else younger or has smaller frame than her ? Based on my limited knowledge about Hanfu, its arm length is too short to be a Shenyi-style robe or a Beizi jacket, but too long to be a Banbi. The bottom length is also too short to be a robe, but also too long to be just a jacket or a hanfu top.
Du Ruo's jacket is both shorter than her actual height & arm length. Plus it also has split sleeves, an unusual detail (no traditional Hanfu has it) i wonder if Du Ruo made that modification so she can fit in the jacket.
