My newest Silk painting!

Silk painting on Chiffon Silk

It is my first attempt at a new technique of silk painting. I tried ironing the silk to freezer paper and taping it to a sturdy surface. It worked like magic! I’m finding that I hate the traditional style of painting on silk which is stretched over a wooden frame.

It was also my first attempt at stretching my silk over canvas! Lets just say I learned a lot after attempting to stretch it.

Thanks for looking! I was inspired by this lovely hydrangea bush that lives right next to my studio window.

A WIP for a Tarot Deck I am working on.

I’ve been cranking out a lot of pieces, I swear!! I got a go ahead from my client that I can post some work in progress shots of my Tarot Deck. The theme is Art Nouveau inspired.

I’m experimenting with some new screen printing materials!! 

I finally got all of my materials in the mail!!

This has been a goal of mine for some time now! I’ve even got a screen drying and my film positives ready to expose! I’m so excited to see what comes out of this first test. 

Some goals I would like to achieve with screen printing would include making small line art prints on paper, prints on silk I can then silk paint and embroider on, and then multiple colors! For now I’ll stick with one color.

I can’t wait to show you all my updates!!

Hey all!

Here is an update of what I’ve been chipping away at. I really loved doing my last Utena illustration, but I wasn’t super satisfied with it because of everything happing in my last semester, so I’ve decided to redo it! 

My reference and inspiration is from the box art of the DVD set of the show.

I always loved the silhouettes the artists would do for the figures, and I’ve decided to incorporate that in my design. A limited color palette helps the softness and quietness of the piece.

I did some studies of Frank Frazetta’s compositions, and I really loved his hierarchy of figures.

 My process started with rough sketching and blocking in shapes in the first image, the second is playing with positive and negative space, compositional direction and movement. Finally, I will start tightening up with lineart (which is really just a guide for my colors. Which leads to color blocking and painting of detials.
