Original Nancy Drew ghostwriter Millie Benson reviewed the first Nancy Drew game, Secrets Can Kill in her Toledo Blade column, published April 3 1999.

HeR Interactive sent a copy of the game to Millie, along with chocolates and flowers, and in return she wrote them a review.

So I went to Japan and got to stay in a ryokan for a night and definitely did NOT* spend time flailing about how the ryokan in Shadow at the Water's Edge is so accurate

Apologies for the bad quality/bad framing on some of these. I completely forgot about taking photos until right when we were leaving to catch our train

The table in our room was actually less traditional than the one depicted in SAW. It was raised high enough to accommodate western-style chairs (which I appreciate as someone with knee problems who can't sit cross-legged for long periods of time)

I didn't get a picture with the room changed over for sleep, but the bedding looked identical. And it really does just suddenly appear once it's late enough. The staff come into your room and change it over from dining mode to sleeping mode.

Our ryokan didn't have a bridge, but it's the same stone pillar!

Onsen:

I obviously didn't take any pictures inside the public onsen since it's a bathing area, but it looked a lot like the game! There were even the different colored curtains to designate men's and women's. Thankfully, this ryokan didn't have a secret closed-off haunted onsen, so both were functioning at the same time. Once a day the staff would swap which bath is the women's and which bath is the men's because the two had different water sources and different materials, and they wanted to give everyone an opportunity to experience both.

The room I stayed in had a small private onsen with most of the same features as the public onsen. There's an area to the side where you wash beforehand with a short stool, bucket, and shower head.

The bath itself is covered by a roof structure and has walls around for privacy, but is still very much an outdoor space within the gardens.

And, last but not least, Lobby fish?!?

nancy drew’s physical appearance hints in game masterpost

first off we have written and spoken descriptions of nancy. we know that she’s a redhead, she looks similar to her mother, and her maybe “unfashionable” fashion sense.

next up we have her general body type shown via the silhouettes and her in full costume

now we have the majority of sneak peeks the game shows us: her skin tone, her hair color, and her fashion sense as seen from the back

now, the very rare 3rd person view of nancy. the middle era of games used this during puzzles or as transportation. usually it was just a vehicle but sometimes we get to actually see nancy walking

here are glimpses of nancy on the game covers. the one from SPY might be debatable but like, shes the one who wears the glasses and uses the zipline so i’m just going to assume it’s her.

finally, the greatest glimpses of nancy that we get in game. a blurry photograph, gunnar’s daughter who nancy herself states looks similar to her, and a doll made in her likeness by fiona.

the cover of ASH with nancy’s mugshot makes her seem like shes just a bit over 5ft 8 if you use facial proportions to estimate where the top of her head should be. BUT her police report says she’s only 5′7″….shrimpteresting…..

so i found the audio file for this line, so it definitely exists (for those who are curious, it’s in C:\Program Files (x86)\Nancy Drew\Warnings at Waverly Academy\Sound, and it’s called “rhr51_SFX.his” and it can be opened with audacity)

according to the audio files, the line that nancy says right before that is either “what’s it like not having a roommate?” or “have you ever had a roommate?” or “is there anybody here you’d like to have for a roommate?” and rachel can start her response with either “i love it!” or “no, i’ve always asked for a single.” before transitioning into this line (i guess they were debating on two different ways to phrase this dialogue, and had the va’s record both options just in case?)

unfortunately, the audio files don’t tell me how to trigger this conversation :/ but i asked @karenplaysnancydrew, who has the world record for the wac speedrun, and she said this:

sadly i cant help a ton because obviously bonus/hard to get convos are the opposite of what i’ve been focused on with all my WAC running but rachel is very hard to have conversations with. i think you get an opportunity to ask her questions 3 times or so? after taking her photo for the website, and then at the end when you finish all the photos and after you get your 2nd black cat photo so i would guess to ask her about what roommate she wants, it would be closer to the beginning of the game. so whatever triggers it would need to be unlocked before taking her photo

so uhh, i guess try asking near the beginning of the game? rachel’s voice files go up to 95, and this line is number 51, so that makes it seem like this conversation takes place about halfway through the game, but the voice file numbers don’t always compare exactly to where they’re placed in the game so uh,,, good luck?
