so i’ve gestured at the fact that i’m trying to formalize this (and i am! i am!!! i swear!!!) for YEARS and only alluded to or built up to it with my other theories (feel free to peruse. a lot of them are fairly outdated and i’d like to revise them with all the new knowledge we’ve acquired but they /are/ still getting at a core thesis i agree with) but i want to re-establish this now that ch 5 is out and i’m noticing people actually start wondering what i’ve been obsessed with all along:

genuinely what the fuck is up with sans

for a hot minute there i think the overcorrection from the UT era brainrot made the community just have their eyes glaze over whenever he’s on-screen. like, i’d argue he’s been suspicious since chapter 1 (grillby’s literally just asset lifted from undertale, wink wink nudge nudge vibes on “especially given i’ve never met you before”) but like this guy’s been doing the shortcut teleport gag since ch3/4 (surely we realize this is odd in the light world) and now he’s running half a festival by himself whilst having mandatory conversations in both routes where he’s, once again, playing coy about what you have to do next.

the common sentiment is that “sans undertale is actually sans deltarune” which, yeah, that has made sense since chapter 1, but that doesn’t explain how /weird/ he still is. he feels just as out of place and oddly as much of a Knower as he does in undertale! he still showed up out of nowhere! he’s still portraying himself as apparently just a guy??

take a moment and ask yourself: is sans being just a guy in deltarune who somehow ends up in undertale a satisfactory answer to his intrigue in undertale?

like to me it’s, uh, have we all collectively forgotten that sans is on some “our reports showed a massive anomaly in the timespace continuum” shit in undertale? what’s exciting to me about the story reaching the point where all the Gaster Penumbra Phantasm World Revolving shit might start taking shape in the next two chapters is resolving this 10+ year mystery of what the fuck that meant. what reports? is he some sort of scientist? what was he working on? in our deltarune he’s clearly just as much of an outsider and as casually in the background as he is in undertale; it’s genuinely still just as unexplainable because he’s STILL being coy and mysterious in the same ways!! and that’s exciting!!

i of course have thoughts on what it could all mean but i’ll leave that for another time :)

ok. so. i'll formalize this into a proper writeup later-- the brainrot's gotta go somewhere!!-- but i'll post my very fast summary i sent to a friend here as a way to encourage myself.

i get it. i've been a pro-gaster merchant (please read this theory. i am still sticking to it 100%. ok not 100% but definitely to the first half at least) since time immemorial, but i sincerely just can't read the opening line for all of this

"I LOOK FORWARD TO CREATING A NEW FUTURE WITH YOU"

and see the themes of the prophecy reflected in that weird little guy. i see a man out on a quest to rebel against what was once set in stone. i see a guy who saw this world fall once and has created it anew with a plan to make us save it from its fate.

as the game progresses we see more and more the themes of rebelling against fate set in stone. kris does more and more things on their own. susie has an entire arc in chapter 4 where she's portrayed as a shining beacon to look up to for refusing to accept the prophecy for what it is. gerson!!! gerson !!!!! i'm not even gonna talk about gerson yet !!!!!! but i have so many thoughts !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

join me in believing. there is only one ending, functionally, but that ending will not be the one set in stone for deltarune. as gaster's strongest soldiers we have to make sure of this

most would be similar to their undertale versions, with a few things changed. toriel’s dress would have more colours, undyne’s armor would be closer to the undying version…

deltarune brainrot gamble theory time

apropos of deltarune chapters 3 and 4 being close to release; i will re-state a doodle i made back in the day into a quick "prediction" i'm not super sure of (but wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be the case).

here's the doodle

the "dark world" variants of any lightner character that existed in undertale (alphys, toriel, undyne, sans, asgore, etc.) might be either extremely close to or literally just their undertale designs. note that the only characters we've seen with dark world variants are those that did not appear in undertale.

this prediction is a product of a side-thought established here (most of the post is unrelated, but give it a read!) in which i consider the idea that the world of undertale is a dark world (or the light world enshrouded in darkness after the heroes fail to stop the roaring)

undertale hot take(?)

recently got back into the yearly undertale phase. have my finger on the community's pulse regarding the characters. this isn't new but it's certainly been building up: "sans can't remember resets, he's actually the same as everyone else, but he knows about them and can read your expression well"

thinking that sans is actually just looking at your face and guessing when he goes "that's the expression of someone who's died x times in a row" is tantamount to thinking that when he says "i know a shortcut" he actually means a literal shortcut hidden in a wall or something.

i think the community's overcorrected from the old Human,,... I Remember You're Resets..... days when it comes to sans' characterization. like, yeah, obviously he's not an all-knowing omnipresent god but that little man knows more than he's supposed to. that's his whole schtick. saying dumb innocuous things that give him plausible deniability whilst hinting at Things. like a wink and a nod and a gesture.

yes. you could take his words literally, at face value, and call it a day. but obviously they're written with more intent than that.

live a little. have some creativity. sans can't remember resets but he has a notebook that survives them, and he keeps tallies and notes on there. the little cabinet in his lab is a time capsule, it's why he can keep the pacifist ending picture in it after a true reset, maybe he keeps information there instead. i don't know. there's a bunch of options. "sans rember reset" is a spectrum and some of you guys are all the way on the "no he don't" end thinking this is an absolute yes/no.

bonus meme: live even more than a little and go read my one ut/dr connection theory in which i claim deltarune is both the prequel and sequel to undertale. close your eyes. enjoy the butterscotch pie smell. accept that sans undertale is sans deltarune, but sans deltarune is also sans undertale...?

this is a pretty unimpressive mouse doodle i literally just whipped up in like less than a minute on ms paint, but it's quite meaningful to me.

one of my childhood friends and i used to watch adventure time as kids and we'd talk about it endlessly, though we never really got to finish it or anything due to a mix of the online era taking off and the fact that i don't even think the episodes aired in order over here anyways.

we recently found out the show's getting some sort of sequel so we decided we'd watch the show from the start once more so we could finish it properly-- then watch the new stuff and talk about it like old times. fun!

it got me thinking about how, as a kid, i struggled immensely with drawing these characters. i have no idea why; they're pretty simple, but i was forever unsatisfied with my results back then.

i think i finally did it well enough to be happy with how it turned out. i'm sure little kid me would be ecstatic.

feels oddly cathartic, and funnily enough, sitting here and looking at a stupid little doodle like this and suddenly being hit with a wave of nostalgia and introspection about my life journey, old childhood activities with friends, and personal growth feels... pretty on brand with the show's themes, hahah.

just a few more OPM doodles. i've entered a brainrot state i hadn't felt since i read everything available on the webcomic a few years ago (i say that, but it's actually been so long...). i have some Thoughts i might write about sometime soon about how the manga has re-written/added on to this current arc (and the finale of the previous one) that're pretty positive. i'm surprised that, after looking it up, a lot of people had problems with it. i thought it was really good.
