Please watch sock muppets video, this is the best theory/explanation of the brothers that I have ever seen, and makes so much sense. He just uploaded it, but I think everyone should see it so pls share it c:
Deltatober day 10: Undertale Parallel
I'm not sure how everyone else feels about the theory where Undertale and Deltarune Sans are one in the same but I know this mf knows some shit regardless. Also I apologize if I did our mans dirty. I did my best.
i was going through the UNDERTALE dialogue dump again and i realized, Sans says this:
i'm just gonna keep having MY turn until you give up. even if it means we have to stand here until the end of time.
presumably, monsters still age, right? so there'd be no way for him to stand there "until the end of time," even if he never fell asleep, cause time still marches on. unless... there's something else going on there. does time progress in a battle? i know some theorize he has some control over time to some degree given the Grillby's scene, his fight, and the keychain thing, so could it just be a him thing? could it be that he doesn't age at all?
undertale hot take(?)
recently got back into the yearly undertale phase. have my finger on the community's pulse regarding the characters. this isn't new but it's certainly been building up: "sans can't remember resets, he's actually the same as everyone else, but he knows about them and can read your expression well"
thinking that sans is actually just looking at your face and guessing when he goes "that's the expression of someone who's died x times in a row" is tantamount to thinking that when he says "i know a shortcut" he actually means a literal shortcut hidden in a wall or something.
i think the community's overcorrected from the old Human,,... I Remember You're Resets..... days when it comes to sans' characterization. like, yeah, obviously he's not an all-knowing omnipresent god but that little man knows more than he's supposed to. that's his whole schtick. saying dumb innocuous things that give him plausible deniability whilst hinting at Things. like a wink and a nod and a gesture.
yes. you could take his words literally, at face value, and call it a day. but obviously they're written with more intent than that.
live a little. have some creativity. sans can't remember resets but he has a notebook that survives them, and he keeps tallies and notes on there. the little cabinet in his lab is a time capsule, it's why he can keep the pacifist ending picture in it after a true reset, maybe he keeps information there instead. i don't know. there's a bunch of options. "sans rember reset" is a spectrum and some of you guys are all the way on the "no he don't" end thinking this is an absolute yes/no.
bonus meme: live even more than a little and go read my one ut/dr connection theory in which i claim deltarune is both the prequel and sequel to undertale. close your eyes. enjoy the butterscotch pie smell. accept that sans undertale is sans deltarune, but sans deltarune is also sans undertale...?
LATE NIGHT UNDERTALE THEORY
After-finishing note: this post is a very weird theory mix that goes from "normal" to absolute nonsense, read with caution ;)
Sans was completely capable of killing the human in the start, it was literally his only job
So maybe he has killed the human, just that we dont get to see it because it was in another timeline and he realized it was useless to try, so he just acts as if he´s "too lazy" or can´t because of his stats
"This is why i dont make promises" doesnt mean he doesn´t break it until the player kills everyone. Maybe he did battle or straight up kill the player with just one froggit or the death of a loved one, we just dont get to see it because he already knows you can´t lose
We only see him fight when there´s "nothing to lose" or "nothing matters anymore". There´s nothing left and he´s going to die anyway, so why not play around for a while? Why not try one last time?
Megalovania is the player´s theme; Sans has his own but it never appears in-game, this means he can and may have fought the human without them willing to in other timelines, but he doesn´t see the point of it now
"Yeah but he wouldn´t break the promise if it wasn´t necessary" Who says he wouldn´t? Who says he´s a gentleman who´s always true to his word? We´ve seen him threaten a child´s life while they were just trying to befriend everyone and go back home, no hints of violence, not a use of the fight button (he threatens the human even in pacifist)
It´s just a kid with a stick and he´s already being not-very-nice, how can we trust him to always keep his promises?
He killed Queen Elizabeth (/j) how can we trust him to not kill a murderer (in the case of neutral runs) or to just not be racist like everyone else in the underground (human= kill inmediately)
Which takes us to a completely unrelated point "it´s late"= excuse to ramble inconsistently :] :
Even if it´s just one person/creature it´s STILL MURDER and in this community, not being rude or judging, but we have a little problem seeing that. It´s still a great effort to see a blood-handed person and tell them you won´t fight/punish them, even if he didn´t know the victim.
He has to tell someone who took an effort to kill someone with a stick or a damn ballet shoe (how do you do that??) to go home and that what they did could´ve been worse. They stab his friend, boss, neighbor or brother, and he has to tell them "HeY thAT wASn´t veRY nIce"
Wait what´s wrong with Sans
Because if he threatens a child´s life over existing but can´t bring himself to fight/punish an actual murderer, even if "he´s already tried" (if my first theory is correct, because if it isn´t and he´s never even tried, it just makes things worse), what´s going on in his mind
What are you young man
do you think sans can stop time?
yes
no
Hi, thanks for answering that ask I sent a while ago! Since you brought up Sans knowing about Resets, I have something else to add now. Sans doesn’t remember Resets, instead making educated guesses. But based on his references to events that haven't yet happened in your playthrough, I’d go so far as to say Papyrus has the most déjà vu about (if not near-perfect recall of) Resets out of any main character in Undertale. What do you think? (If you don't understand, I'd be happy to explain.)
Hello! Sorry for the late reply. ;w;
I do like this idea a lot. Sans doesn’t seem to remember what happens in other timelines, but rather he has a lot more knowledge of resets and timelines of most people, so like you said, he can make educated guesses. He also seems to be able to read Frisk’s expressions? That one I’m not so sure, but he does seem to be able to make accurate guesses of how many times Frisk has reset based on their expression.
((Lines taken from the Github Undertale dialogue dump))
As for Papyrus, I remember that he has quotes about remembering you. One of it is that if you play the game again after meeting him, he says Frisk looks familiar.
I think there’s more quotes, but I can’t remember them at the moment. ;w; But yes, Papyrus does seem to remember certain things despite resets.
I do enjoy this theory because there’s so much potential for it. ^^ I really should get back to writing Undertale fanfics about these theories.
Thanks for the ask!
