stratt, strategy. i am often (before ever reading this book too) saying stuff like “okay this is the strat” while explaining how to do stuff. the coordinator of everything is named stratt? are you kidding me? amazing. 10/10. stratt is method.

i looked up both yáo and ilyukhina and couldnt find any cultural significance for their names other than yao = handsome and ilyukhina = mildly biblical. if you know a further meaning pls lmk

MY TIME TO SHINE (I’ve done a weird amount of research into Yáo and Ilyukhina’s names). SO:

- Ilyukhina

The surname Ilyukhina doesn’t have any specific meaning that I know of, outside of the vaguely biblical meaning that you mentioned. However, her first name (Olesya) has a few meanings that I can find. Depending on the translation, it either means “of the forest/girl from the forest” (I’ve seen like one or two that say the sea instead of the forest, but the forest is more common), or “protector/defender”. So her first name literally means defender of Earth 🥹

Yáo

- so fun fact that I learned is that Yáo- despite being “first” in his name (Yáo Li-Jie)- is actually his surname. Also, please take this interpretation with a grain of salt- Chinese names can have different meanings based on the characters used to write them, and I don’t know how to read those characters. So his name could have a completely different meaning than I’m guessing.

Yào does most commonly mean handsome or beautiful. Li (the first part of his given name) has a long history of warriors and rulers, and therefore is often known to mean “strength” or “powerful”. Jie can mean “heroic” or “outstanding”. Putting it together (and guessing along what Weir probably wanted), Yáo’s name means something along the lines of “handsome, strong hero.”

I know we all know how much the rest of the Hail Mary crew would’ve loved meeting Rocky (RIP Olesya Ilyukhina you will always have a special place in my heart) but you know who we totally forget would’ve loved to meet an actual, intelligent alien?

Eva Motherfucking Stratt

Everyone forgets (especially movie fans since I don’t think they even brought it up for y’all) that Stratt wasn’t a scientist like the rest of her crew. Sure, she was definitely smart enough to understand most of what they told her, but it wasn’t her field of study. She wasn’t a biologist or a chemist or an astrophysicist, she was a historian. She was also recommended for the project because she was an incredibly talented diplomat. Canonically, she’s fluent in at least seven languages, and probably speaks several more- give her a day, and she’ll understand Eridian almost as well as Grace. The atmospheric testing, the experimentation with Xenonite, that’s all her crew. But getting to know an alien race, learning all about their language and their history and their culture? That’s her thing, right there.

TL;DR: If anyone would have been absolutely fascinated to sit down and learn about society on another planet, it would’ve been Eva Stratt. Thank you for coming to my TED talk
