The selection of this year's prompts has arrived! Dig in! We are excited to see what you'll create.

Plain text and flavor below the cut!

Light it Up – The first flame, the spark that started the wildfire. Does it burn with resistance or regret? Does one turn to the other? Or does the ash that it all crumbles into at the end make it futile?

2. Cobbled together – Rushed and misaligned. Is it the torture itself, or whatever mishap follows? Maybe you didn’t need somebody’s help to be like this in the first place.

3. Mirror – The reflection that haunts you, the trapped representation of all your flaws, or the shine-facing proof of what you could’ve been.

4. Beyond – Is there one? Does it bring peace, or pain? Should it be dreaded, or sought? Or maybe you should be warned of it, of what lurks in that dangerous place of Other.

5. “Did it hurt?” – Naive concern, or sadistic mocking? A misplaced pickup line turns into a nightmare. Regardless, we all know it did, didn’t it?

6. Grotesque – Beauty or horror? To whom? What horrifies one might be the epitome of beauty for another. What’s beauty without pain and sacrifice? Where do we draw the line?

7. Lost – Where or when? Is it a person, a place? Do you need to be somewhere unfamiliar to be lost? Maybe its what you’ve seen all your life that becomes unknown.

8. Persistence – Repetition, stubbornness. Does it help, does it make it worse? Do you have a choice? They say to repeat the same mistake, always met with the same result is insanity, but you know better don’t you?

9. Let it go – Your life, your love, your friends, what came before. Or maybe the horror of it all. Can you ever truly leave it behind? Who are you without it?

10. “Please- just please” – A plea for mercy, for compassion. An empty one, maybe, looking up to an unforgiving universe, a god so far away or one with hands still dripping of the blood of your guts?

11. Behind bars – Freedom or capture? The impression of something better, but which of the two is it?

12. Scars – Reminders of failure or strength? Both, neither. Who held the handle of the knife, who’s hands clutched the blade as it came down unforgiving?

13. Sterile – The room, the tools, your life. Even after that smell haunts you, the siren call of the fake promise of safety and care. The enticing form of futile protocol.

14. Redemption – Yours, theirs. Does it matter when its demanded? Does it make the suffering worth it, does it cleanse the blood it spilled? Do the ends justify the means, when the bleed drips warm and the screams still ring?

15. “What have they done to you?” – Horrified, gleeful. It doesn’t matter when it’d damning all the same. You’ve been changed, gutted and repurposed.

16. The Hunt – The thrill, the chocking fear, the all encompassing rush of primal instinct. The instant before, when you know you’ve been caught and there is nothing to do but run, run until your lungs give out and your legs crumble and betray you.

17. Sacrifice – Willing, primed and promised, or torn and given? Is it a trade, a gamble or is something predestined? Will it ever bear the fruit it promised in sweet whispers?

18. Resistance is futile – It is, it always is. Things are the way they are, and you may run yourself ragged after some idealistic dream but you know better, don’t you? You’ve been told the truth all your life after all. Hope brings only regret.

19. Branded – Unequivocally. Forever. Iron sizzling on skin, marks that will never let you be somebody again. Always brought back to your lowest point, it doesn’t need to be physical to be there, mocking you.

20. “Don’t leave me here like this!” – Indignant, to hide the pain, the fear. The betrayal of loneliness, or maybe it begs for inclusion, consideration.

21. Last Hope – Feeble or undying, or maybe yet all on your shoulders. The weight of it crashing, an anchor in the sea of despair. Will you sink down with it?

22. Self Loathing – Maybe its what you did, what you are. Or maybe its what you failed to be or avoid. It burns, stains everything around it with the caustic knowledge of its truth.

23. Disgust – Visceral, instinctive, overpowering. Is it an action? A situation? Or maybe some lie finally uncovered?

24. Guilt – Slimy, just at the back of your throat. The pit in your stomach for what you’ve done or what you’ve missed. Who you failed. It’s hungry in it’s pursuit.

25. “How could you?” – Whispered in horror, chocked around blood, wheezed in one’s last moment. That’s always the question, isn’t it? How, how, how? Why, why, why?

26. Drowning – You can’t breath, there isn’t an up anymore. It’s all down, down deep and it fills your lungs, your mouth, your nose. It presses against the back of your eyes, replacing every bit of you.

27. Change – Unforgiving, undeniable. There is something different, something wrong that had to be pulled out or has been forced in. You’re unrecognizable.

28. Everything is a tool if you want it to be – How inventive the human mind is. How many inventions through the ages, advances and so much cruelty. Anything can buy you escape, time. Anything can hurt, if used in the right way.

29. Reversed roles – When the hunted becomes the hunter, the prey the predator, the victim the executioner. They say the abused become the abused, and the cycle is inescapable.

30. True freedom – As tradition dictates, go out with a bang.

Was once talking to a friend actually, we're both brown (me being mixed), and talking about Brits. We realised we both kind of forgot we were brown Brits. Like, a huge percentage of the population, which we are part of, are brown brits. And we forgot. Because it's so normal to conflate white and British, when they're actually separate things.

We also talked about how there's a lot of racial tension between different groups of brown people in the UK, which is a problem that rarely gets acknowledged by other groups that aren't directly involved because tensions like that just kind of get ignored in a white vs brown/black framework.

Like I'm from an area where people look similar, speak almost mutually intelligible languages, share a common history, culture, cuisine, etc. – and yet also experience very strong dislikes towards each other based on perceived races.

It feels like a lotta people talk about the racism in the west, and clearly racism and white supremacy do exist, but it's not very helpful to oversimplify things. Saying it's the White English people that are doing all the oppressing within and outside of the country just doesn't cut the mustard when you consider that a lot of the rampant xenophobia and racism is coming from people like Rishi Sunak and Kemi Badenoch.

It feels almost infantilising to not consider that non-white people are human too, and are in fact capable of oppression. Like yeah, a brown guy wanted to deport refugees to Rwanda. That guy was the Prime Minister in the UK. A black woman is now railing against refugees as well, she's the leader of the opposition. Keir Starmer, a white man and the current PM, is also doing a cheeky spot of anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Feels like sometimes we get stuck in this loop, when discussing things as lefties, where we create this nice neat loop of factors and simplify everything and say "If only it wasn't for the white people and the White Supremacist ideology, things would be fine" but i feel like it's not that tidy. It involves class, also, but also culture, and I think innate human tendencies we brush under the rug.

I feel like while racism itself is a very historically particular phenomenon, as is colourism and all such, xenophobia is a human instinct. In the sense that we all have this tendency to fear people different from us, it's just up to each person to realise that that's not an instinct that we should trust and rely on.

Getting rambly here, but that's the issue with erasing brown and black and marginalised Europeans and North Americans and treating the areas as white-by-default. It not only is bad because it denies large groups of people their identities, and it's also bad because it obscures the actual origins of white supremacy, BUT ALSO it stops us from acknowledging that ANYONE CAN BE RACIST and it's our jobs to try and stop ourselves from doing that. As well as the fact that class interests absolutely contribute to racism and white supremacy is often an expression of that.

London is one of the most diverse cities in the world and many other British cities are nearly as diverse.

Britain wasn't 'totally white until slaves were shipped here'. We have records of black people living right across the British Isles in the medieval period.

We have DNA evidence of West Africans in 7th century Kent.

We have evidence of people of African descent in Roman York.

That's just the things I could remember off the top of my head. There's plenty more. And that's only the people we have records or physical/DNA evidence for.

I think something that trips a lot of Americans up is the very American hangup of heritage. African American, Italian American, Irish American, etc. You're American. That's not to say you can't be proud of your heritage and by all means I'll not stop you from referring to yourself as such, but you need to understand that in Britain there's no such thing as African British, etc. With few exceptions, a Black British person will refer to themselves as British (or English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish) and only the very most racist people will disagree. Most racist people in Britain wouldn't argue with them either.

Only the very most racist people in Britain treat British as synonymous with white. If you do that, you are on their level whether it's intentional or not.

Before anyone starts, I know the cultural reasons behind having a prefix to American to denote heritage. I'm aware of that history. That doesn't change the fact this is a uniquely American thing and when discussing non-American people, Americans shouldn't bring their own culture into it.

I was going to just leave this in tags, but while it’s not the most serious manifestation of this, the thing that happens like fucking clockwork on social media is US Americans shitting on ‘British food’ for funsies and then vocally denying when challenged that curries or other foods with global origins count as British cuisine (or indeed, when it comes to dishes like chicken tikka masala which were extremely famously created in the UK, actively exemplify it). And it’s not only white US Americans I’ve seen doing this, either, but in all cases they generally seem to think they’re being extremely progressive by not attributing a culinary development to the colonising country or w/ev, but what they’re actually doing is denying that the British Asians who created those dishes are British. Cool cool cool cool cool.

It’s also just hypocritical, because most of those people would be rightly appalled if someone started claiming Cajun, Creole, Tex-Mex and soul food weren’t American cuisine. per OP, one aspect of US-centric main character syndrome is indeed thinking they’re the only country in the world to be a cultural melting pot and have fusion food. Anyway it’s just food but it’s also not, it’s one of those things that is super revealing about how people see the world.

Agree with all of this except the bit about food. So much of historic traditional British cooking is just Step 1: Boil. Step 2: Salt or Sugar. Step 3: Enjoy. In the same way I wouldn't call burritos classic American food despite being eaten by most Americans, I wouldn't call curry a classic British food. A popular British food, but not a classic traditional one. Thank you immigration for introducing flavor and style to British cooking.

Hi! British person who does medieval reenactment here, so eats a lot of medieval British food. First of all, British cuisine has always had spices. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg etc might be more readily available today, but you will find many recipes from 1000 years ago that include them. I will also add that spices are not the only way to add flavour! Everyone forgets herbs! Mint, rosemary, thyme, all would be used in historical British cooking. Frankly, most of this would be more readily used than salt and sugar! Although coming to sweet - combinations of dough, fruit, honey and spices very much existed, and they're so fucking good. Yes, there's a lot of stew (although what's wrong with stew?) but also pies, breads, drinks, other stuff...

I'm sorry I'm very into historical food and I think it's misrepresented. I'd encourage people to seek out some recipes and try them out, you may be pleasantly surprised!
