I’ve seen people saying NOT to use general tags like ‘amputations’ so other people can use them, and to instead use things like ‘amputation whump’, but I’ve also seen people saying TO use general tags so they’re hidden if people have those tags filtered. Which should we be doing?

Attention Whump Community!

Clogging disability tags is a massive problem that we need to address. Many tags, especially those surrounding permanent injuries, paralysis, vision loss and certain illnesses have become unusable due to being flooded with unrelated things. Yes, that includes your writing. Those tags are not for you. It's isolating, frustrating and depressing to try finding a community and other people who share your issues but all that comes up is whump, fandom shit, gifs, headcanons, etc.

I'm newly paralyzed. I have looked at many tags surrounding paralysis, trying to find support, a community, anything of people struggling with the same thing. Nothing. There's barely anything for us in the general disabilty tags. I am BEGGING you to understand and recognize how AWFUL it is.

So, I have a proposition. A tag you can and should use exclusively for disability content in whump writing. Not any other tag surrounding disability, lest you'll clog it up.

It's tempting to use more specific tags, I get it. Due to being in the whump community myself I know #medical whump is already a tag. You have those tags. Use them. Don't use the disability tags. Don't clog up the few spaces us disabled people have.

This needs to be reblogged every so often, so I'm doing it again. This is why I use "whump loss of consciousness" and "loss of consciousness whump." The "fainting" tag needs to be accessible to people with actual fainting problems, and the "unconscious" tag may not be used by a lot of disabled people but it is definitely full of Jungian dream stuff I am not looking for.

A good rule of thumb is, when you know you have a specific interest and will be using a certain tag a lot, check that tag first and make sure that it doesn't already get used a lot for people's medical problems or real world news. Even if you don't care about those other people, you still won't get to see as much of the content you want to see because it will be used by non-whump people.

Baby bird season is incoming and I’d like to remind everyone that birds do not have a significant sense of smell. Bird parents will not reject birdlets because you have handled them.

If you see smol birbs with few or no feathers on the ground, you can safely put them back into their nest, bird parents will still care for them.

If you see smol birbs with some or most feathers on the ground, please leave them there, as bird parents are probably nearby watching and feeding.

nakey bird = accidentally fell out, is cold and scared, put back in nest! if you can’t reach the nest, try to put it on a wide branch or fork so predators can’t get at it as easily.

scruffy feather bird = starting to try the fly thing, not very good at it. only put in nest/branch if predators abound, i.e. you have four outdoor cats and they’re licking their chops.

fluffy feather bird = smol fly guy! do nothing. can probably get away from predators and will flip its shit if you pick it up.
