i see the widely loved "stoic whumpee gets sick and becomes less stoic as a result" and raise "stoic whumpee gets sick and becomes even more stoic as a result"
CHARACTER DOUBLING DOWN ON THEIR WORST PERSONALITY TRAITS WHEN THEY'RE SICK MY BELOVEDDDDDDD. becoming more crabby, ruder, more aloof, more standoffish, lying more, being manipulative, being clingy, etc. >:)
The problem with having OCs is that sometimes you wanna read about your little guy being in situations but unfortunately he is YOUR little guy and no one is gonna put him in that situation but you. Tragic.

FAQ and text version under the cut!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Where can I find the prompts list?
A: @whumperless-whump-event on Tumblr.
Q: How are the prompts divided?
A: Each day has a "title" or a vague theme, followed by two tropes and one dialogue prompt.
Q: Can I use the title as a prompt?
A: Absolutely.
Q: Do I have to use all of the prompts?
A: Not at all.
Q: Can I use all the prompts?
A: Absolutely.
Q: If I'm writing a chronological story, can I swap days to fit the timeline?
A: Yes, just make sure you tag your days and prompts appropriately. If you're writing for day 6, but you post it on day 12, tag day 6, not day 12.
Q: Can I have early or late entries?
A: Yes. This is a very laid back event, and meant mainly to inspire lots of whumperless whump. It's not a strict writing challenge.
Q: Is there an Ao3 collection?
A: Yes! This year's collection is linked here. The parent collection also includes 2024 and 2025--make sure you select 2026.
Q: Can I write [insert anything here]?
A: Yes. However, this blog will not reblog certain topics (ex. nsfw or suicide), so please tag your works appropriately, so anyone can filter out anything they don't want to see.
Q: Can I use AI?
A: No.
Q: Can a whumper be included in the prompt fill?
A: The short answer is no. The long answer is that you cannot have the role of whumper in your prompt fill (aka: no whumper-on-whumpee); however, if the character you want to be a whumpee or a caretaker happens to be a whumper, then as long as they are not fulfilling the role of whumper, it's fine. Also, if there is a whumper, it must be totally impersonal and faceless. Here are some examples for clarification:
A character's drink is spiked at a party.
OKAY: The whumper who spiked the drink is never mentioned and is completely faceless, and the story is directly about whumpee recovering.
NOT WHUMPERLESS: The whumper who spiked the drink kidnaps the whumpee.
A character is left alone in a storm.
OKAY: The character is stranded or lost.
NOT WHUMPERLESS: Whumper tied them to a post and left them in the storm.
A character is mugged on the street.
OKAY: The whumper is a stranger, faceless, and the focus is on Whumpee.
NOT WHUMPERLESS: The whumper is a stalker and there to kidnap Whumpee.
All in all, if your goal is to fulfill the event, then try to avoid a whumper. If you're using the prompts elsewhere, then ignore this, but in the spirit of the event, no whumper roles please.
Q: How do I tag my posts?
A: Tag with #whumperless whump event, #wwevent 2026 and #wwevent day [x](Don't just tag wwe, that's wresting.) Make sure to tag the fill type (art, fic, music, etc) with #fic, #art, #et cetera. Then, tag triggers and content warnings. Please put these first in the tag order! It just makes it easier to reblog.
Q: How do I get reblogged?
A: Mention this blog in your post! It's the easiest way for me to find you. Otherwise, I won't reblog it. (This also means if you do not want your post reblogged to the event, just don't mention the blog, and it'll stay private.)
Q: I disagree with something/have an issue with a prompt/want to address a problem. How should I do it?
A: Send me an ask and we can fix it. I am more than willing to work through any problems--I am human, and not without fault.
I think that's about it. That's a lot, so if you've got any other questions that aren't on the list, feel free to shoot me an ask. I'm happy to help!

someone coming down with a fever because their body has finally decided it’s had enough. they feel completely drained and exhausted. their eyelids are heavy and their head is pounding. they can feel heat radiating from their own body beneath the blankets, yet they’re shivering at the same time. they press a pillow against their chest, searching for some kind of comfort, wishing someone was there to hold them. with trembling fingers, they grab their phone and open the first conversation they see. the bright screen makes their eyes hurt. "hey, can you come over please? i don’t feel well". they type the message and hit send.
someone getting told (w earnest concern/sympathy) “that cold of yours isn’t getting any better, huh?” and irrationally taking it to mean they are getting a bad grade in being sick
A character who shows up to the function sick, but since they don’t say anything about it, no one else brings it up either (even though they all can tell). But as the evening wears on, they start to feel much, much worse, unsteady on their feet and fuzzy-headed while they try to hide what would be their more obvious symptoms.
Until finally they return to the group and say, wearily, “I…don’t feel well.” Most of the group is like, “Yeah, we know” in a casual, lightly teasing way.
But the character’s close friend is visibly concerned like, “No, you don’t understand, if they’re saying that, they’re about to hit the floor.”
Yeah yeah "graphic design is my passion 🐸" I was trying to make a tool to explain how I have problem deciding where a fic should fall on this arbitrary "sense of danger scale" and I think I accidentally defined some words in a way that will be useful for me in the future.
So I think that a whumpy fic can be defined by its ratio of hurt to comfort, but that doesn't mean that a whump fic contains 0 comfort. If someone has been disemboweled in the mountains with no communication and no medical supplies, their friend can be rocking them and singing to them and wiping their damp forehead, but the ratio of hurt to comfort is still going to be greatly skewed because that's a mortal or near-mortal wound.
Likewise, a fic where a character gets a papercut can still enter into "whumpy/whump-lite territory" if it's really bothering them and no one cares, because the comfort level of 0 skews the ratio.
There's also a matter of delving. A high-ratio (which is to say, fluffy) fic can still be a satisfying sickfic if the author delves into the symptoms (which imho is usually what differentiates a satisfying vanilla fic from a disappointing one)
ANYWAY
All that to say, when I don't have a fic idea beamed into my head by the gods, I tend to to struggle with where to put it on the scale. Because I generally tend to prefer lower ratio fic, but I know at a certain point it can get off-putting for people, so I end up torn between two sort of lukewarm desires: the desire to write a fic with slightly more appeal to me vs the desire to write a fic with slightly more appeal to other people
We can assign each scenario a “hurt” value and a “comfort” value on a scale of 1-5, plot it on the graph, and then categorize it into one of four quadrants:
Captive whumpees who need to be in control and who default to their training and being meticulous to cope with the utter loss of control while captive:
- obsessively making their bed over and over
- getting up at the same time of day even though they don't know what time it is, because their body does somehow
- similarly, obsessing over the time and date
- attempting to keep with the same routine they had when free, even if doing most of it is impossible (they might just pretend to in order to make themselves feel better)
- memorizing guard/captor routines, faces, names, schedules, building layouts in order to have a chance of getting revenge once out
- eating the food they’re given in a specific order, in a specific way
- collecting and hiding random objects (nails, paperclips, pebbles, sticks, etc) “just in case”
- if they’re let outside, doing the same “circuit” around the area every time, like they’re doing a patrol
- getting distressed when things were promised but don’t happen when/how they were supposed to (meals, lights turning off/on, scheduled interviews interrogations, shower, etc)
- going over training exercises and routines to keep themselves occupied, even if only in their head so as not to waste strength
- obsessing over everything that led up to their capture, imagining all the ways they could (or couldn’t) have prevented it
- counting. Seconds passed, tiles, cracks in the walls, corners, windows, people, days spent inside, meals, breaths
Guy who never feels like his problems are “bad enough” to be taken seriously: what if I hurt the character so horrifically that everyone around them could not possibly deny the severity of their pain even if the character themself tries to downplay it.
ok i know it might be a little cliche but i'll always love it when a character falls asleep at the end of a comfort fic. being in pain/sick/stressed out is exhausting, especially when they've been suffering for a while, and yet all of those conditions make it hard to actually rest and heal. so having that character finally drift off will always read to me like whatever comfort they got is working, character is getting some much needed relief, and as the reader i always find that so soothing.
Just. A whumpee in the throes of a viciously high fever; lying limp on their bed with sweat clinging to their clothes and glinting on their pale face, their breathing laboured and uneven, eyes half open and glazed, seeing nothing; the only sound or movement a faint moan of pain once in a while and their head tossing restlessly on the pillow, a crease between their brows and cracked lips forming soundless words as they grasp fitfully at the air...
