If your argument of why asexuality does not belong in LGBT spaces is because it doesn’t suffer the same types of oppression that the rest of the community suffers, then you lack a fundamental understanding of intersectionality.

All women suffer from sexism, but the sexism suffered by a black women is going to be infinitely different than the sexism suffered by a white woman.

Gay women and gay men all suffer from homophobia, but gay women suffer from a far different type of homophobia than gay men. Gay black men suffer from a different type of homophobia than white men.

Trans people suffer from a different type of oppression than gay people.

The difference, is that all of these things are still oppression.

To say that one is less valid than the other because they do not all look alike is fucking nonsense. Each marginalized community comes with a different set of oppressions than another community, and also: a different set of privileges over other communities. A gay white man will, statistically, hold more privileges over a gay black man, even if they are both gay men, because the experience of the gay black man must factor in the element of racism and generational community trauma. This is the purpose of intersectionality, to understand how the different struggles exclusive to each community make up their individual experience, specifically so that one experience is not considered more valid than another. Equity over equality.

Asexuals never claimed to suffer the same types of oppression as the gay community. However, you also do not suffer the same types of oppression as us. Communicate with us rather than try to compete with us, and you may learn something new.

Asexuality isn't a sexuality, let me explain.

A lot of people today say that gender is a spectrum and I'm not downplaying that, that's great, but, if you ask them about asexuality they'd probably say something like "it's when you dont feel sexual atraction" if they even know the word at all.

If you know anything about the asexual community you know that doesn't fit everyone. Demisexuals and reciprosexuals confuse a lot of people because they try to fit them into that definition and try to say they aren't asexual. That makes some people feel like they dont belong in our community when they do. If you're gay, you can be asexual, if you are bi, you can be asexual, if you're straight you can be ace and if you're ace you shouldnt feel like you cant fit in anywhere else.

If you are homosexual, you cant be heterosexual, thats just bisexual unless I'm missing something. Asexuality is... disconnected from that. It's its own spectrum and I need more people to realize that.

I get what you’re trying to say but let me tweak on it. There are also non-oriented asexuals, people who do not experience attraction to any gender at all. The identification of asexuality as a sexual identity is important specifically for the purpose of legitimizing it as a valid way to identify, so that non-oriented aces are validated in their position on sexual attraction simply by saying “I’m asexual,” when saying that they are gay, straight, bi, etc. is not something that is true for them and therefore not something they can pull from.

Everyone wants to invalidate asexuality’s place in LGBT by talking about all the privileges we have over gay and trans people but maybe it’s time for you to take notice of the privileges they have over us.

Let’s start with the fact that when ace women with vaginas go to OB/GYNs and they ask about our sexual history and immediately wonder why we’ve never had any dick, they’ll blow us off if we tell them “I’m asexual” but they’ll leave us the fuck alone if we tell them “I’m gay.”

Gay people have more medical legitimacy than asexual people who are still recognized medically as having a sexual dysfunction. Remember back when gay people were declared sick by doctors? Well that shit’s still happening to us. Gay asexuals at the doctor’s office are safer assigning themselves as gay than they are assigning themselves as asexual. That’s called privilege, assholes.

I've recently seen a rise in people (even asexuals) saying aces who are ace because of trauma, and I'd just like to make something abundantly clear.

Asexuals who are asexual because a trauma have been accepted as a valid part of our community since long before many of you saying otherwise were even on the internet. You do not get to kick them out just because you have a different (exclusionary) opinion.

Aces who identify with asexuality because of trauma, whether in part or in full, you are no less valid or welcome in this community. You are just as valid as aces who are ace separate from trauma. You are welcome and wanted in the ace and aspec communities. Your experiences are real and valid. No one can tell you what your sexual orientation is; only you can define your orientation.

@ anyone who has a problem with this, you have a lot to learn. Exclusionism is not something I'll let take over this community without a fight. We're better than those who hurt us. I don't care who put a knife in your back, you don't take it out and put it in someone else's.

Think before you speak hate. Exclusionism has no place in the aspec community.

Oh I have nothing to learn, but you can learn that sexual identity is not a mental illness symptom nor can it be “caused” by anything. If anybody said “you’re gay because you were molested by your dad” they’d be cancelled by this entire website within one week, but it’s valid to say it about asexual people? It’s okay to write asexuals off as a product of mental illness while all other sexualities get to be Born This Way? Give me a goddamn break, admit that you think asexuality is a correctable problem. You’re not validating anybody except the shitty-ass doctors offering me pills. 

Sexual aversion, which is what is caused by trauma (not asexuality) is a valid and very treatable condition that can be addressed and can also get worse if not treated. It is a primary symptom of PTSD. The longer you try to pretend it’s asexuality the longer people go without the treatment they need and the longer the asexual community, who possess an actual UNTREATABLE sexual identity, stay on the other end of aphobic pill-pushing uninformed medical professionals.

There’s nothing exclusionary nor aphobic about separating two VERY different states of being, drawing a fat line, and clarifying that they have nothing to fucking do with each other so that everyone is pushed in the right direction of their needs and the spaces they belong in. Sexual aversion belongs in medical healing spaces where the trauma can be deconstructed. Asexuality belongs in community education spaces where they can be accepted as an identity that they are born as, just like the whole damn rest of the planet was born with their sexuality.
