REBLOG IF YOUâRE JEWISH AND you have a GO-BAG âjust in caseâ, OR have seriously considered and/or been recommended other âBe Ready To Leave In A Hurryâ plans
Had a discussion with an acquaintance of mine, who thinks that Iâm being paranoid, among other things.
My father keeps currency from several different countries in a safe, and we always keep our passports with us. The one time I left it in a different city was a pretty disturbing experience.
The Emigrants by Victor Hageman, 1910. oil on canvas.
Painted on a monumental scale, The Emigrants depicts three generations of one family gathered at the point of exile, their emotive expressions capturing the trauma of forced migration. In 1928 Hageman exhibited this work in Antwerp under the title âJewish Familyâ, while an inscription on the reverse of the canvas reading âDescendants Israelitesâ specifically references Jewish exile.Â
A couple of random points
Since this tumblr is the only place I can ~vent:
A big problem I and many other Jews have is, with whom can we safely and ethically ally? I cannot ally with Islamist, chauvinist or otherwise autocratic forces in the Arab world and pretend that they are a meaningful part of the global left. I cannot pretend that Iran or Hamas or Saudi Arabia is more âentitledâ to ethnocracy or human rights violations because its citizens are Arab and not Jews. I cannot ally with Western individuals or organizations who are anti-Semitic, who believe that Jews have no right as a collectivity, or who participate in revisionist history (naively or otherwise).
Is the Israeli left as strong as it could be? No, certainly not. Nor is it strong in the Western countries (certainly not in the United States) or the Arab world. But it seems to me a complete myth that principled Israelis are non-existent and that anyone who tries to speak out is punished in some kind of Stalinist government program. The huge numbers of âdissidentâ Israeli academics/journalists, along with the prominence of publications like Haâaretz and +972 indicate otherwise. Personally, I know many people who have travelled to work in âpeacemakingâ or human rights organizations in Israel, or who have gone on interfaith âreverse birthrights.â What other middle eastern country would tolerate this and, indeed, support a whole economy of foreign NGOs, activist journalist, and peacemaker Christians? Would America tolerate a flood of foreigners who came for no other reason than to expose the treatment of Black Americans or migrant farm workers? Would Belgium? Would Qatar?
In some ways, Israelâs right-wing or tribal tendencies are not actually colonialist imports but reflect the values of its neighbors. Israel is surrounded by autocratic, dueling ethnic groups and the lesson of the contemporary Middle East is, surround yourself with your own kind or youâre fucked. Leftists talk about how Israel needs to be âre-indigenizedâ to be acceptable to them. What if âre-indigenizingâ means becoming more tribal and autocratic?Â
Information about Israel is presented to us with a narrative already built in. That narrative could not have higher stakes. Whatever Israelis do that is wrong is proof not that they need to be corrected, but that they need to be destroyed. This is an impossible situation. Look at the outcry the UK and the US have faced for âbombing Syria,â a country in far worse shape than Israel. Look at the forgiveness shown to Germany and Japan (and the acceptance that the Allied forces committed atrocities, too). Israel is not a metaphor. Itâs dangerous to treat it like one.
We know, Finn. We all know.

In most university campuses in America, âcultural appropriation,â meaning the adoption or use of elements of one culture by......
âThe yellow badge of shame, or yellow Star of David, that Professor Davary elected to appropriate to help make her point, has a long and terrible history that is unique to the Jewish people, which in and of itself makes Professor Davaryâs actions offensive and insensitive. Anti-Muslim bigotry certainly deserves condemnation as do all forms of xenophobia and bigotry. And legitimate concerns about Islamist extremism and Islamist-based terrorism should never be used as an excuse for vilifying or discriminating against Muslims. This important point, however, does not give anyone the license to appropriate Jewish history (let alone to try and invoke in the minds of many people the industrial-scale genocide that Nazi Germany inflicted on Jews during WWII).
Moreover, while many people today solely associate the yellow badge or Star of David with the Nazis and the Holocaust, the yellow badge of shame was first required for Jews to wear by Umayyad Caliph Umar II in the early 8th century in Baghdad in order to separate and distinguish Jews from the Muslim majority. The practice was reissued and reinforced by Caliph Al-Mutawakkil (847â61A.D.), and remained in force for centuries thereafter throughout the Middle East by Muslim dictators in order to oppress and shame Jews as âDhimmiââ.
I swear, Iâve read every single X-Men comic (up to maybe 03 or so, but back to the first issue, and Iâm catching up to present) and seen all the movies. Iâm a goddamn PhD in Magneto Studies.
Magneto is Jewish. It matters to him. To paraphrase biologists: nothing about magneto makes sense except in light of his Judaism. He is not the most observant, but he cares. It matters.
No one who erases this should claim to understand the character. It is as much a part of him as controlling metal is. More so even, because heâs lost his powers but never has he lost his Jewish sensibilities.
So, itâs now 5776. Never forget that magneto is Jewish. In general, never forget. Itâs a phrase dear to his heart.
âNothing about magneto makes sense except in light of his Judaism.âÂ
This is very, very crucial. Glad my friend alerted me to this conversation.
Posting this separately because it was originally a response in a thread started by an antisemiteâŚ
Proposal to end debate on Magnetoâs denomination and declare him the founder of âMutantistic Judaismâ which is Judaism focused on mutants, because heâs mostly say fuck humanism.
This might be the answer to all my religious confusion...
I've always been curious, does Magneto ever interact with non mutant jews in the comics? What's his stance regarding them given that (from what little I know) he's supposed to be anti human?
Off the top of my head, he hasnât in the present era, though remember that he married a non-Jewish (I think specifically, but I may be wrong, havenât read these issues in forever) Romani woman and had children with her, well after he knew he was a mutant and didnât trust humans. He at the least has an affinity for the oppressed.
He also canonically spent time in Israel. He would have, of course, interacted with non-mutant Jews there.
So in fact, Erik has some very significant interactions with Kitty Pryde, a teenage Jewish mutant, during the Claremont era. Starting with this mess:
As you can see, sheâs a crucial catalyst for his own self reevaluation. In terms of Claremontâs proposed redemption arc for him (which unfortunately never able to finish) this is the very start: itâs the first time that the comics actually identify him as a Shoah survivor, and in the most typically bombastic manner possible. This is from Uncanny X-Men Volume 1, #150.
Another important moment in that redemption arc comes in Uncanny X-Men Volume 1, #199. Erik takes Kitty to a gathering of Holocaust survivors at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and by the end of the issue, heâs decided to turn himself in for an international war crimes trial. Itâs heady stuff, and he makes the decision in an exceedingly--and physically--Jewish context. I couldnât find any scans online, moreâs the pity, but you can read a good summary of the issue here: http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Uncanny_X-Men_Vol_1_199 Of course, this happened under Claremontâs watch: when non-Jews started writing him, there tended to be vastly less Jewish context. That said, the recent run of Magneto was impressive in many ways, and Iâd highly recommend it to everyone whoâs interested in the character. It could have used more Judaism, but at least it had a lot of complicated Erik, which is something most Marvel writers neglect.
Iâm actually writing my BA thesis on Erik (well, officially on âHalf-Allegorial Zionism in the X-Men Comic Book Seriesâ, but you know) so Iâd be happy to contribute to this project. Heâs an absolutely crucial character, with a very complicated history, both canonically and in terms of the history of how heâs written, and I really think he has a lot to offer to Jews looking for ourselves in pop culture, messy as he is.
Iâve been trying to research for any summer or online reform or conservative jewish studies programs and Iâve realized that the majority (or possibly all) the programs out there are orthodox or ultra-orthodox based.Â
Iâm glad that they have these programs available but I wish reform and conservative judaism would create these programs too so there is diversity in summer/online jewish studies programs.Â
Iâve been looking at programs like Partners in Torah and JInternship (the last one looks orthodox but I havenât found anything to confirm)
If anybody from the jumblr community knows of any programs for a jew graduating from college, please comment on this post. Iâd love to hear what you have to say!
Just a note, not all programs that are under Orthodox (or âultraâ Orthodox, although honestly that modifier means next to nothing; itâs just a way of making us seem more Other) auspices necessarily require participants to be Orthodox themselves.
Hey lachaim--the JTS summer program sounds like it might be just like you're looking for: http://www.jtsa.edu/Academics/Summer_at_JTS/NISHMA.xml. I'd also suggest the Hadar summer Beit Midrash: http://www.mechonhadar.org/yeshivat-hadar
Tomorrow is a day of commemoration of MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Jewish refugees
Itâs today (November 30) â an official âMizrahi Day of Remembranceâ to honour Jewish refugees from North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Check out my tags for Mizrahim, Sephardim, Jewish history, Jewish henna (of course), and just Jewish stuff in general!

i agree with you, but can you explain why you don't consider jewish people to be white?
i donât think itâs my place to say why, because i am not jewish and i donât want to say something wrong.
but my friend who is jewish educates me a lot about it, so i would suggest asking someone who is jewish.

I am so goddamn sick of this question, and if I never see it again it would be too soon.
Right, so the on-one-foot version is: Jews are an ethnoreligious group. As an ethnic group, we hail from the Levant. ALL of us. Yes, âevenâ the Ashkenazim. The vast majority of us share not just Middle Eastern genetic material, but a lot of common phenotypes that are often racialized, and are common to the Middle East and Mediterranean. Yes, âevenâ Ashkenazim.Â
In Europe especially (but NOT exclusively, antisemitism isnât just a white western problem), the fact of our foreign origins and the fact we werenât Christian led to massive persecutions that continue to today. The word antisemitism itself was a 19th C term coined by German âracial scientistsâ looking for a more âscientificâ reason to hate Jews, as this was considered more enlightened and reasonable than relying on xenophobia and religious discrimination. It wasnât predicated on us being not-Christian, it was predicated on the fact that we were foreign Semites and therefore a threat to indigenous white Europeans.
Antisemitism is an inherently intersectional oppression, relying on religion, culture, and ethnicity. It is predicated on white supremacy, just like every other form of racism. This is why if you look it up on wikipedia, it is defined as such.
Antisemitism is racialized. This racism was the root of the Holocaust. That many Jews are or were white-skinned did not mean that those Jews were racialized as white, especially not during the Holocaust.
In some places today, like the USA and Canada, some white-skinned Jews are able to assimilate into whiteness. Some of these Jews identify as white. Some of them do not. However, this is conditional at best, and these Jews can be and sometimes are rejected by whiteness and white people, and sometimes violently so. Because their relative privilege, their ability to pass, does not change the fact that antisemitism is an inherently racialized oppression. In this way, even white Jews can and do suffer from white supremacy, and to dismiss this antisemitism as not racism when it very much is is incorrect and does not accurately understand the liminal position of these Jews in the racial hierarchy. In other places, like most of Europe, all Jews, even and including white-skinned Jews, are to this day are conceived as an inherently foreign Other. They would not be considered âwhite.â To call them white and assume they have full unfettered access to white privilege is entirely incorrect.
Naturally, of course, this entire conversation is centering whiteness, since not all Jews are white-skinned, white, or white passing. So perhaps when you next consider asking foolish questions about a much maligned ethnic group, you can do us all the favour of not assuming all Jews are white. A note: Not all Ashkenazim are white or white-passing. There are plenty of Ashkenazim of Colour. To conflate Ashkenazuth and whiteness is to engage in serious erasure, and it is disgusting. Donât fucking do it.
By that same token, there are a number of Mizrahim and Sephardim who are white-skinned and/or white-passing. This does not make them âwhite.â It certainly doesnât make them not Mizrahi or Sephardi. Donât assume such bullshit things.
We are a rich and diverse ethnic group, with many cultural traditions and backgrounds and a countless stories to tell. Do not assume things about us, do not flatten us or erase us with your simplistic false bullshit narratives, do not talk over us, do not ever assume you know anything about us, because if you are a gentile, I can bet cold hard cash that you donât.
