the term "protective hairstyle" always seemed euphemistic to me, as if it were trying to justify these hairstyles on the basis of health, when these hairstyles shouldn't need any justification. I just imagine some girl in the 1970s saying, "No mama, I know you want me to straighten my hair, these braids are just to protect it while it grows out."
