The Death of Tim Laughlin and the Birth of a Hero
(time for some rambling)
Fellow Travelers is an incredibly, brilliantly written show that manages to dive with depth and beauty into its subject, while never shying away from the ugliness of its historical truth and context. Amongst the various narrative choices they made, one of my favourite ones is the fact that we never see Tim Laughlin die.
We see him struggle with his physical health, we see him disconcerted, angry and very aware of his mortality, but we never see him actually die. In fact, the last images of his character show him fighting alongside his friends, his community, with more fervor than his physical state probably allows.
There is something heroic about the closing of his arc. We see Tim almost giving up, falling lower than we have ever seen him before, and then he rises again. He refuses to sign the do not resuscitate order (note: he wouldn't have been less heroic if he had signed it), openly states he wants to fight and come back to life, and he does. He fights for what he believes in and for what he wants, even if the latter means lovingly asking Hawk to go back home and let him go. He blows into a whistle with all of his strength even if it means finding himself breathless for a fleeting moment. He stands even if he can't walk without his cane.
His determination being the last thing we see of him gives even more power to the image of his quilt, an indelible mark of his impact on those who knew him and by extension the audience who spent eight episodes adoring him. His quilt, made of his clothes and a line that defined his life, adds his name to the pantheon of heroes who had to die to make the cause move on, to be seen, for help to be considered.
To make the death of Tim Laughlin invisible to the eyes of the audience only gives his character a greater, more lasting impact and, while heart-wrenching, makes for a beautiful conclusion for his story. disclaimers: apologies for the potential grammatical and spelling mistakes, english is not my native language.
When Elphaba touches Fiyero’s face out in the woods after they rescue the baby Lion, and he’s like 🥺, I had the thought- when was the last time/how often has somebody (especially a person his own age) touched him just out of care for him as a person, and not out of sexualisation or wanting something from him or for bragging rights etc. :( When was the last time someone touched the real him underneath the superficial surface he put on :( Reminded me of that photo of a hand cupping a cheetahs face 🥺😞
Oh this ask is so tragic, but I love it.
I think this is particularly sad because I imagine that Fiyero is a very tactile person in general. He's very physical, he's very flirty, while he's not bad with words in normal circumstances, he loses them multiple times with Elphaba - I feel like his love language is touch.
So this idea that he's craving touch from care and love but only really gets it from people wanting to use him or from sexualisation - and sort of tells himself that that's the real thing- does make Elphaba genuinely touching him out of care so meaningful. The other touch in that scene too, the one where she grabs his wrist because she does need his help, I actually think is the same - because it's not a selfish want, she wants him because he's helping her in a way no one else would or could, she's valuing him for his inner self.
I've mentioned in another ask that Fiyero mentions in the SF workshop that (until ALAYM) he didn't even believe love was real, so he does not appear to have had an affectionate childhood or particularly good parents. So he's probably as touch starved as Elphaba.
I cannot believe someone really wrote the lyrics "come be how you want to, and see how bright we shine"
I don't know if a sweeter song actually exists

JONATHAN BAILEY as Fiyero Tigelaar Wicked (2024), dir. Jon M. Chu
I love the added depth they gave to Fiyero's character bc it really hammers home just how much his "Dancing Through Life" mindset is an act right from the start.
He's someone who realizes how bad things are in Oz, how even darker things are coming, and feels helpless to stop them. "Dancing Through Life" is his way of coping - if nobody else cares, then why should he? Why let yourself feel hurt and pain, if you can't do anything about it? He's frightened of the future, so he turns away from it and pretends it isn't there.
Meeting Elphie doesn't make him less shallow (he was never shallow, he was just desperately trying to be), it instead makes him realize that there are other people who recognize the injustices in Oz. That moment with the lion cub is so pivotable bc he realizes that there are actions they can do to help others.
Fiyeraba + text posts (1/?)
I do not care if Wicked is considered a “family friendly” movie. When Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey sing “As Long As You’re Mine” in part two I want that shit to be softcore porn.
*taps sign* Both Glinda AND Fiyero are important to Elphaba and her journey, you don't necessarily have to ship either of them with her or even like either of them, but to purposely try and remove them (or even just one, I see some of yall do it especially in shipping wars) from Elphaba's life completely misses so many points of Wicked and also take away from Elphaba as a character.
Fiyero Tigelaar being 100% in love with Elphaba Thropp while saving a tiny furball together.
Get yourself a himbo prince boyfriend who's never known actual intimacy and vulnerability and panics upon experiencing it.
Happy 2025! I spent all New Year's eve obsessing about Wicked.

“Excuse me, there is no pretense here. I happen to be genuinely self-absorbed and deeply shallow."
