Dark Souls 3′s Hawkwood.  A character that really spoke to me.

I wanted to do a piece about one of my VERY FIRST OCs.  Gamma.

Many years ago (2012-2014) I role played in the transformers prime community, and I ran a Shockwave blog.  Back when I took magic anons, he ended up with an infant.  The character sort of took off behind the scenes.  Gamma was a little shit with an emotionally absent father who did try but taking care of physical needs is not the same as love.

Theo, or Fyodor, was a human incarnation of Gamma as an adult.  His mother and father were emotionally absent, and he lived a rather mediocre life in IT doing whatever.  Just went through the motions.

Several years later, I fell into Warframe and found ANOTHER mostly evil scientist with a horde of cloned children.  Tyl Regor, arguably, is a much better dad.  The bar is that low.  Maloh started out as one of his first clones (not of Tyl himself, just in general), and eventually Maloh went “fuck this” flipped the Grineer the bird and ran screaming.  

Maloh has at LEAST three different incarnations for Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Warframe.  Bad Dad only exists in one.

Talasse is my most recent.  He has no dad what so ever.  He’s a daedra in the elder scrolls who can pass as a dunmer when he feels like it.  When compared side to side with Gamma, there is no character resemblance, but when tracing from Gamma through Theo through Maloh, it’s undeniable.  

I like tracking my characters.  I may do another piece for Volya.

My OC who I have recycled through three fandoms in my favorite incarnation of him.  Dark Souls.  More on Izzy below.

Izzy is a literal ray of god damned sunshine.  In Dark Souls, his story is an NPC role.  He’s a pyromancer who offers the player a PVE covenant, the Order of the Final Death.  Undead don’t really die, but you can put a body in such a state that it may as well be dead.  His order, which came from the Great Swamp, seeks to administer Final Death to as many hollows as possible before the Pyromancer goes hollow themself.  Isidore is not a pioneer of the magic, but he is a skilled pyromancer that... effectively renders hollows comatose until either the kindling or the smothering of the flame. 

Story wise, he destroys the mind so effectively through pyromancy that a hollow is rendered mindless and immobile.  They can’t hurt anyone, and they aren’t who they once were.  Others in his order seek a way to administer a true final death, but they aren’t hollow yet themselves.

Izzy, in the meanwhile, is not afraid of going hollow.  He knows that someone will put him down when it comes to it.  In the meanwhile, he sees a correlation between hopelessness and going hollow, so he tries to sow hope and basic comfort when he can.  He encourages people to come together and forge a social bond to help defend against early hollowing.  Big Hat Logan survived for at least a century undead since he had a goal. While Izzy can’t provide a goal, he can encourage holding onto things that help people feel human like bathing and putting a roof over their heads.

Shows up to Firelink shrine like “damn bitch you live like this?”

I heard through the grapevine Nintendo’s doing something with the trilogy.  My life for a switch port.  My old Wii disc is waaaay too heavy for the wii lol.  It will eat it.

I updated Aneshyr’s look to make him less racist (I should have known better lbr) and accidentally made him look like palette swapped white jesus. 

But come on any hipster lookin dude with long hair and a beard looks like white jesus.

Origin of my process

@bread-atronach idk if you were serious in the tags or just ooh aahing but...

You remember back in grade school in computer class when there was a pause and nothing to do, so you’d open up Microsoft Paint and throw down a bunch of shapes kind of like this...

And then you’d start filling it with color...

And to make it more fun, the colors couldn’t touch...

So you’d get something like this?

And if you felt ambitious or particularly bored, you’d make weird shapes.  Either a mix of polygons or ones that just weren’t squares.

Well suddenly it’s not mindless-- it’s now a logic puzzle.  That big white space shares a side with 8 other shapes.  This puzzle can’t be done with just two colors.  If I want to keep it to three, I have to make sure there’s no green touching it so I can make it green...

In doing so, I had to add waaay more green than I had spaces open.  I had to swap out several color shapes. Now, as a ten year old on a computer without internet before wifi was a thing, I would either go “sure yeah whatever” and start a new one, or I’d make it pretty.

I was not the only ten year old to do this.  

THAT is the basis for my “mosaic style”.

I wouldn’t have started it except my tendinitis flared up DRAMATICALLY and I... cannot hold a pen...  Or I couldn’t.  I recently found some chiropractic videos on youtube about adjusting your own wrists and hands, and my tendinitis has gotten better since.  

For my current art...  Here’s a picture I’m just gonna trace over that I grabbed off of google

Then using straight lines (I use firealpaca.  It’s shift with a brush)  I’ll do something like this 

Now, NORMALLY I’ll have a rough sketch of what I want.  I don’t just... trace over a cat....  But my hands hurt, it’s 3 am, and I am too irritated to sleep SO

When I’m satisfied with that, I drop the lines to black

Realize I need more lines to better define the shapes as I go along and.... Voila!

For the most part, each shape is just a plane on the surface, but the shapes define the .... shape... of the object because shading is dependant on... the shapes.... I need another word.  It’s 3am now.  But THIS only took me about 15 minutes.  The cat I mean.  So once I get a sketch I like it’s smooth (ish) sailing from there.  

Less tends to be more, as the third era Sotha Sil I got way into and had waaaay too many shapes on him.  Also fucked up my pen size oops.  Where as the one of Revus has far more limited shapes (polygons?) and looks waaaaaay more refined and intentional. 

So other than the initial sketch, I don’t use my tablet pen at all.  I don’t even use my tablet.

Talasse’s two appearances.  

You can’t tell, but he’s smiling.  He just... smiles Like That in the second era.  He’s making eyes at a certain someone actually.  You can find his role play blog at @dyslexic-daedra

Yeah, he joins the Aldmeri Dominion in the second era.  He likes to assume a mortal appearance and record history like that, and he felt the Dominion was the most interesting, but he retains the general shape and height of a dunmer, so it’s easier to pass as one.

So upon doing some research after realizing that wow, giving a white coded character that sort of hair style really doesn’t sit right, especially with the narrative, I decided that this is at the very least insensitive and far more likely insulting. 

I will not be taking this down, as to delete it would be to act as if I had never done this.  

Bethesda has not been known for being sensitive, especially not in the earlier games.  Oblivion’s Shivering Isles expansion has a bad case of 2005 feminism which is really just misandry, for a mild example.  Morrowind, while enjoyable, tries to include a lot of different topics, some of which are more sensitive than others, and handles them with varying degrees of success.  

Giving the dunmer saint Nerevar a mohawk, and thus all of the Ordinator helmets is... one of the less sensitive things.  An article that helped nail this home for me is here: Why We Don’t Wear Mohawks 

But what should have clicked for me far sooner is that a hair style named after a native american group very likely is, oh I don’t know, somehow related to that group and their culture.  Applying it to a white coded character, especially as a white person, is really unacceptable.
