MATTHEW FAIRCHILD
& in the DARK, I can hear your h e a r t b e a t.
I tried to find the sound but then it stopped, & I was in the darkness, so darkness I BECAME.
Kidnapper.
Eyes narrow once more, a head tilt following not far behind. In another world, she could be comforted by that answer. In another world she might even say thank you. In another world Echo trusted him still. âRight. Youâll protect me.â She said slowly, her voice rather soft compared to usual. âYou left me.â She meant to yell, she really did. But it came out horse and strained. âYou left me and itâs been years and you never called, or texted, or anything â and now you kidnap me and tell me youâre protecting me?â Echo finally managed to give her words a little bite as she stepped closer to her sort-of-ex.
âI didnât---â He sighed, cutting himself off. The male needed to remind himself that she had no idea of the danger she was in and despite his intentions, he already had doubts about how well he could protect her. âYou were already a target because of your brother. I only agreed to do this when I found out it was you.â Kidnapping someone had never appealed to Matthew. He grew bored too quickly with people since he refused to grow attachments but Echo was different. He left her because he had grown attached before he could stop it and now he was back at square one as he stared down at her.
The last couple of months felt like a blur to him. His father had gained his promotion, some people he was closed to at one point where gone, and now he felt like he was stuck all over again. It was quite⊠DEPRESSING to be trapped in a state of mind where you were responsible for multiple things. Any time he saw his father on the television, heâd turn the channel â afraid to upset Dante â while other times, heâd sneak a peak at odd times at night when he assumed heâd be the only one awake. He had gone to the kitchen, hoping they had restocked the fridge for those that were stuck in this miserable hellhole. Upon finding out he was wrong, his eyed rolled. âIâm not in the fucking MOOD for this shit.â He slammed the fridge door closed after realizing there was just nothing heâd want to eat. Sometimes, getting to eat here was a fucking blessing. Other times it was a damn CURSE.
Matthew personally didnât care for what they kept stocked in the kitchen. It was all good food but it was always the same since most of the gang members had their own personal favorites stocked away in their own room where it couldnât be touched. He was no exception so he brought down his own stash of ingredients so that he could prepare himself something. âThen what are you in the mood for?â He questioned, setting down his items on the counter. The maleâs outburst didnât phase him. A couple months after joining, he had become accustomed to similar reactions from fellow gang members and angry prisoners.
No? He didnât work for her brother. Things suddenly seemed much worse. So much worse. Seeing him working for her brother could make sense. It would even make sense out of what had happened between them a couple years ago. He could be just another shit head drug dealer then, her brother could set the whole thing up. Her brain stumbled for a new explanation but came up short. Aside from the terrible, obvious one. Matthew worked for one of her brotherâs enemies. Her eyes fell to the floor, head shaking no in a flip of tousled dark hair. âAre you going to kill me, Matthew?â Echoâs voice only broke slightly as she lifted her head to meet his eyes.
Frustration would have come easy if it werenât for the fact that he knew the reason behind Echoâs wild suspicions. Maybe not so wild considering the situation but she expected to be hurt. It sting that she might have the slightest belief he would actually do that to her. Killing had become normal for him, it wasnât party of his own daily role within the gang but it happened on occasion and it never surprised him when someone came back reeking of copper or bleach. âNo, Iâm not... Thatâs why Iâm the one taking responsibility for you. Iâm not going to let anyone hurt you,â he assured, trying to keep his tone even.
there were some days that devon didnât leave her room. days stuck behind her computer, messing with her tablet, hacking something for fun or required of a job for the ANSERINI. hours upon hours, sometimes forgetting to eat enough meals in a day. there was a reason she had a mini fridge and a microwave in her own room, sometimes she couldnât be bothered to hit up one of the kitchens. at least she showered and cleaned herself up, she wouldnât stink. LEANING against the desk, she stared at the screen. it was another few days she hadnât interacted much outside of her room and she knew that some of the other gang members noticed. sighing when she heard footsteps and a knock on the door frame, she turned toward the new presence. âdonât TOUCH anything.â she stated, knowing that when people say her equipment they got curious. âiâm busy, what do you want?â
half of mattâs job in the gang had to do with hacking but his skills in that area were still limited. the anserini, of course, had someone better and he often went to her when certain walls were too high for him to pass on his own. âfriendly face maybe,â he stated, only half serious because friendly was not the gangâs specialty even among members. âi need a favor. iâve got a name and photo of someone high profile in the drug business. can you do a search on him?â this was a personal job so he didnât like having to come to devon but he doubted she would be interested in the details unless she wanted something from him.
Relief, misplaced but so pleasant, rushed over her. If she was going to die, this would be an odd way. He wouldnât hurt her. Right? Green eyes watched him carefully, her brain scrambling to process seeing him again. A hollow feeling of pain radiated in her chest, almost as an afterthought â there wasnât time to feel it right now. âYou work for my brother?â She asked immediately, voice raw from yelling. Her tone was softer now, weary and suspicious, as her arms crossed over her chest.
That had not been the first question he expected to hear upon their reunion but it was narcissistic to think that what they had in the past would take priority over her confusing situation. He wished they would give the kidnapees some sort of explanation while they stayed in the attic but half the fun was supposed to be that they were clueless. âYour--? Uh, no. Do you have any idea who took?â
Fine, maybe she had been in over her head. Echo could only hope she had been captured by her brother and not a rival of his. The past two days had been alternating outbursts of demands to speak to him and pleas that she had money â she could buy her way out of this. âWatch it!â The two hands wrapped around her bony arms tightened as she struggled and her feet were practically off the ground as they hauled the small woman from the attic. She didnât stop shouting until they set her back down in front of a door, Echo wringing free from their grasp. Straightening as the escorts knocked on the door, she ran through the list of threats she had prepared the last two days. âCastor, I swear to god I will kick your tiny balls so hard you choke onââ The words ripped from her throat as the door opened, stolen by the face it revealed. âMatthew?âÂ
Fire. Thatâs what he had noticed about her the first time they met. It was dull sometimes but always present in her eyes. Even now it made him chuckle to hear her through the walls of his room, spit insults at men that were probably twice her size. Steeling himself for what he had to do, he took a deep breath before opening the door. He ignored her as he stepped to the side so they could lead her in, nodding for them to leave once he was sure she wouldnât have time to escape once they let her go. âSo um... youâre probably confused,â he started, refusing to look at the girl after they left.
CCTV footage has picked up ANDREW GARFIELD wandering around Brookswood, but itâs actually just MATTHEW FAIRCHILD the 29 year old LONE WOLF. According to police records HE is a INFORMATION BROKER within the ANSERINI, which means HE is both SELFISH and DEDICATED. HE is known to be PANSEXUAL and is the kidnapper of EMILY BROWNING.
Everything always managed to fall into place where Matthew was concerned. Aside from small obstacles, easily overcome, his life could have been called perfect. Growing up in an average sized town, he had two best friends and plenty of friendly acquaintances among his peers. After graduating high school, one of his best friends became his partner and Matthew swore that he would never love anyone more. It looked like a picture perfect future waited for them. They would be attending the same school, eventually finding successful careers that conveniently coincided so they would never have to part, and they could stay in their hometown to raise the family they hoped to have someday.
Then Hendrix got sick and all their perfection started to fall apart. Years of desperate hospital visits and long nights without sleep because Matthew didnât want to waste a moment of the time they had left. They started to take their toll on both men and their families. Matthewâs family began to grow distant from him, unable to recognize the person that he was becoming and Hendrixâs family stayed close but he only saw them as reminders of what he was going to lose.
After the death of his husband, Matthew broke. He ran from everything and everyone that reminded him of Hendrix, finding himself in a darker world. Attempting to focus on anything but himself, he became a self employed private investigator and information broker. He also had his way with a string of partners, some meaning more to him than others, but he left them all in the end when they got too close. The thought of being happy with someone and replacing Hendrix, it plagued him with guilt that seemed intent on being the only constant in his life.
Eventually the Anserini found him when they hired him to find one of their own members. Matthew didnât realize it was a test. When he found their missing person, they offered him a place in their gang if he killed the man he had been ordered to find. Kill the betrayer to prove his own loyalty. The choice was easy. He decided that if he wanted to forget he would have to let everything go and become somebody that even he couldnât recognize. After a couple years of being apart of the Anserini, he finally felt at home again.

tl;dr basically he went off the rails after losing his husband, disconnected himself from his old life and was brought into the anserini when he gained a reputation as a private investigator and info broker.
Other Info
matt is incredibly smart and charming when he has to be, which he does for his job within the gang.
otherwise, heâs very closed off to people, heâs more open with other gang members but his real friends are few and far between.
he can seem meek and gentle at times but heâs got a nasty tempter and his mood can change very quickly
despite that, he is one of the more reasonable members of the gang
