A lot of people on twitter wanted me to explain how I draw expressions, so here you go
Unless you're drawing explicit realism, in my opinion, expressions should be exaggerated to some degree. If you aren't doing a 1:1 recreation, the point is to get the FEELING across. Try making the expression you want to draw and feeling how your face pinches and stretches.
Skin doesn't just "disappear" when your face moves it around --- that's where wrinkles come from! Pay attention to where your skin creases when you emote, and use it to your benefit. It's a fine line between overdoing it and underdoing it -- find your own balance.
Ultimately, every expression has a little bit of push and pull, unless your face is completely neutral (and even then, there are still some wrinkles...). Learning to think of expressions as actions and reactions is VERY helpful in learning to draw them without needing a reference, and in learning how to stylize and push expressions based on references as well!
I think a lot of people end up with stiff or unexpressive emotions in their art because they're just trying to recreate a picture instead of understanding WHY and HOW the face is moving --- and it's a tough thing that takes a while to really pick up and learn. Hopefully is helpful in showing a way of thinking about it that can influence your process and approach to emotions!!!
Also, bonus: even without the lines, the planes alone still show a LOT of emotion.
Reblog to save a life.
*8/31 - Hawaiian rail, Porzana sandwichensis (EX)
This year’s theme for Avian August is dedicated to the incredible birds of Hawaii! I’ve put together a list of mostly endemic species, plus a mix of iconic seabirds and forest birds, as well as a few extinct species, so there’s lots to learn, draw, and appreciate together.
✨How to join:
* Use the daily prompts as your guide to create bird art each day in August - or pick a few favorites and go at your own pace!
* Post your work anywhere you like and tag it with #Avian August or #Avian August 2025 so we can all find and share each other’s work.
Whether you’re here to learn, sketch, paint, or just admire - remember, as always, to take breaks, have fun, and let these beautiful Hawaiian birds inspire you. Thank you for joining! 🌈🐦🌴 I can’t wait to see all your beautiful art this year.
~*~
I’ve added the conservation status, just to be clear: vulnerable (VU), near threatened (NT), endangered (EN), least concern (LC), extinct (EX), critically endangered (CR).
I tried my best to be thorough, but if there are any mistakes I’ve made, please point them out. 💖
And all of that freehanded wow!
heyyyyyy long time no disembowelment {:
Ok I’m super nervous because I’m trying a new community art thing called My Item Your Character.
.
Why: as many of you can tell, I’m very much an item artist. I also crave art collaborations where there’s a more casual aspect to it and I got this idea. What if I design twelve garden themed witch(or wizard) hats and let other artists go crazy designing the characters around them!
.
Who knows, maybe we can create a whole world together. I have no clue how it will work out but I felt it would give a different type of creative freedom than a DTIYS or inktober type thing. I’m very much excited to see what you guys do with it!!!💖😁
.
PS: I plan to reblog as many contributions as possible assuming the challenge doesn’t take off like crazy lol.
Get your contrast on this Juxtaposition July at the Prompt Foundry!
Whether things be opposite, just different, or two sides of the same coin, placing one thing in juxtaposition to another can create interest and nuance you wouldn't get from either on its own.
If you use this list, please tag me here @thepromptfoundry, I’d love to see your writing and art!
Feel free to combine different days' prompts with each other, or combine them with other events! Create fanwork, invent something original, give us some academic analysis, make art that's all vibes, whatever tickles your fancy.
Respond to as many prompts as you want or as interest you, don’t worry about missing or skipping any. Remember, this is supposed to be fun!
If you have any questions or musings, check our FAQ, and if you don't find your answer, shoot me an ask.

Hi I just have to say thank you so so much for teaching me the term art nouveau today!!!! I really struggle to find words to describe aesthetic elements I like and it makes it impossible to explain other than “I’ll know if I like it when I see it” or to actually seek out things I like rather than happen across them.
Art Nouveau and Gothic Revival are the PINNACLE of human design tbh.
Go look up some of the utterly astounding art nouveau art and architecture out there and enjoy! There's so much utterly beautiful stuff from that aesthetic movement it's SO good. Architecture, art, jewelry, all of it is gorgeous.
If you want a place to start, Alphonse Mucha is a famous Czech Art Nouveau artist and probably one of my favorite artists. I had a poster of his four seasons in my bedroom growing up, and I still have it in my living room today.
Lalique is, in my entirely subjective opinion, the greatest jeweler to ever live
He also did utterly beautiful astounding glass art
For architecture, Victor Horta is probably the most famous
Enjoy!
"Les Jardins de Nuit" (censored version) - Mixed media: colored pencils, pastels, ink, and gold leaf on paper. I created this artwork in 2020 for my book Forgotten Gods.
