Hi 👋 My mum is working as a nanny in the U.K. so she has really active days and she's been struggling with her weight despite this so I asked her what she's been eating and it adds up to roughly 1200 calories a day on average. She has breakfast and dinner and about a million cups of tea but never lunch. I really don't think this is sustainable or healthy but she insists that because she eats high fat there is nothing wrong with so little caloric intake. (1 of 2)
(2/2) I personally think her body is in starvation mode, I have no idea how long she’s been eating like this cause I can’t check on her. So my question is two fold IS she being healthy or close to it like she says and do you have any suggestions for hassle free work lunches she can take/ make for her toddler filled day? Thanks so much, I really love your blog 😃
Honestly I think that there is an element of people using ‘I’m just so busy’ as an excuse to eat however they want to eat so ultimately if she isn’t being honest with herself about how this could be impacting her health you giving her suggestions of what to eat that’s quick and easy probably isn’t going to do much.
I worked as a nanny for a few years before university and I actually found this the easiest time in my adult life to eat properly because you have to prepare food all the time for the kids so it’s very easy to just add some for yourself or tweak it slightly.
So if the kids were having baked potatoes I’d throw another one in for me, or if they were having soup I’d have soup, etc so not sure why she can’t or isn’t doing that?
Otherwise I would bring in things I could cook in the oven easily like chicken and just pair it with a salad (could be a readymade shop bought salad). Or anything I’d prepped at the weekend that I could box up and just microwave at work.
I would honestly say that nannying is a job that lends itself to being able to make yourself food, so I think if you want to have an impact you probably need to get her to face up to why she isn’t eating (outside of ‘I’m so busy with the kids’) - nannying is just parenting but as a job, parents manage to eat so nannies can too!
If she won’t eat then suggest she ups her consumption of calorie dense foods such as oil, butter, nuts, nut butters, cheese etc. Ultimately it is not great to get 1/3 of your calories from calorie dense foods, but it’s better than eating 1200 calories which is the amount of food a toddler should eat in a day.
Also as a side note when I was nannying and walking a lot with the kids/pushing the buggy etc I could easily eat around 2000 calories a day and still be losing weight. To maintain I would have needed to eat 2300+
Calorie needs depend on age, height, etc. And obviously I am younger than your mum and also quite tall, so she may not need to eat that much, but 1200 calories is definitely not enough.
