Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:3-6
Nicodemus came to Jesus by night, not wanting others to know he went to see him. Jesus had the ability to bypass the appearances and get to the substance of the matter. He bypassed Nicodemus's affirmation to get to what mattered.
Believing is not enough. There must be a heart change accompanying the head change. You can not live a new life with an old mind. You must have a new mind to not only live a new life but to even see it!
Jesus let Nicodemus know that he needed to be reborn spiritually. As he was, he was dead in trespasses and sin, estranged from God inwardly though appearing righteous outwardly. He (and we) now need to be born again spiritually, with a new mind to live a new life.
This new birth can only come when we accept Jesus as the payment for our sin and surrender all to him, believing he is the Son of God. Attending church is not enough. We must be born again! Reading the Bible is not enough. We must be born again! Even praying is not enough. We must be born again! Armed with a new mind and a new heart, we can see and enter into the kingdom of God and experience kingdom living.
