Rory Gilmore Reads...A LOT of books!

On November 25th, 2016, Netflix released its’ much anticipated series, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Even those unfamiliar with the television show (2000 - 2007) one can recall that Rory Gilmore reads…A LOT of books! This book list is comprised of titles that were not only referenced by Rory herself, but ones that we feel she would check out today. Forget-me-not

What a sweet name - for a particularly sweet little flower that grows in abundance in gardens at this time of year.

The forget-me-not (Myosotis sp.) is related to borage and comfrey. It’s curious name dates back to Medieval times where in Continental Europe it was known as ne m’oubliez mye in Old French and vergiz min niht in Middle High German.

A German folktale claims the flower got it’s name when a young bride on the eve of her wedding saw one of the flowers floating downstream. Her betrothed jumped in the river to save it for her but was dragged under by the current, crying out ‘forget me not’ before he was lost to a watery grave.

The colour blue was a symbol of fidelity in Medieval Europe and right up to Victorian times posies containing forget-me-not were given by lovers to their beloved as a promise to always stay true.

M Grieve (A Modern Herbal) notes that on the Continent the plant was made into a syrup and given for pulmonary affections. She also claims the juice of the plant was thought to harden steel, although I can’t find any other references to this. Perhaps the belief was related to it’s symbolic properties of steadfastness.

As a flower remedy, forget-me-not variously promotes dreaming, helps connect with the spiritual world and with loved ones both living and dead. It also releases fear and aids the memory.
