Roller rinks built in the early 2000’s are liminal spaces. Nothing about them, not even the oddly patterned carpet, has changed since they were built.

You can walk into one at 10 in the morning. Skate for a few minutes and leave as the sun is setting.

The music that is played never changes. You don’t know how many times you’ve heard this song but it easily outnumbers the number of times that are possible.

The birthday corner is always empty. A layer of dust has settled over the tables. No one has set foot in the birthday corner for far too long.

There is a kids cartoon episode playing on the far wall. You are almost certain that that cartoon has been discontinued for well over 10 years.

The lights projected on the floor are swirling in a pattern. That pattern is hypnotizing. You stop skating. There is nobody else on the rink to tell you to keep moving.

The arcade is in a room that shouldn’t exist. This building is far too small for an arcade of this size to fit.
