The air between them rested in such quiet reverence, at least for this small fragment in time. And she'd smiled at how much he'd differed; not just from Morax — ah, those two could not be more of different minds even if they tried with all their might — but from Xiao himself. In that alone, Barbatos had already been a wonder to behold. But in truth, the peace held within this quietude between them already bore all the more difference, it was warm as if it were the sun's embrace itself, comforting fears that she, in this age's time, no longer held. Or perhaps, she'd let go of them only here, at his undue behest; she no longer knew, or rather, hardly remembered. Was this what he, too, felt in his presence, or even a whisper of it, of this concept that she was never able to have him know, feel, or even believe? Tranquility, how she'd always so craved for Xiao to understand its existence.

Eyes of grey settled on the flute then, and it was ever so inquisitive, as if subjecting it to certain playful scrutiny. For how could an instrument bear such divine capabilities? "I do not believe Xiao to have ever spoken of even a semblance of peace in his life before now." And so she knew the request would come unbidden and as such, would be subjected to likely refusal. But who was she, if not one to defy the laws of boundaries, especially if presented with a kind smile, one with an eagerness reminiscent of a child's unbridled curiosity. "Might I ask you to play it for me, Barbatos?"

In some ways music is a language like any other, an expression of the parts of one's soul that cannot be encapsulated by words or gestures, and as such more powerful a force than some might think. It has always been a part of Barbatos' life, long before his rise as one of the Seven; a part of the very fabric the world is made of. The winds have songs of their own only few can understand, as do the waves on the sea that hugs the shore and the rocks and stones that rise to mountains and castles alike.

Barbatos hears them all and sings along, listens to the tales they tell and picks from them what suits his lyre and flute. As whimsical as it seemed that the one he tied himself to was a bard, in retrospect it was as natural as the love of a flower for the sun. They spoke the same language and when he sang, Barbatos would listen. Listen and feel.. not unlike the way Alatus is listening to him these days.

Where words and touches fail, music prevails. It soothes and heals his tormented soul, cleanses his qi and shields him from the ever-present miasma that festers from the edges of the shrinking battlefield that is Alatus' existence. It's all Barbatos can give him, bar his company and time, but a mere fraction of what he wants to give. He's become a constant thought in Barbatos' consciousness, an anchor to something that lies outside the lands of freedom - an excuse for a selfishness an archon should not display.

It tickles the part of him that never meant to rule and refuses to do so until this day. Though an archon he may be in title and tales, deep down he's still a wisp in the wind, carried by the whims of fate and his own heart. Like so often these days it guides him to the border of his domain, along which he likes to sit to make sure his melodies carry over the hills and mountains to reach the one he wishes them to hear. Today, however, he is joined by an unexpected audience.

Such a contrast to Morax in most aspects of her being, Haagentus is by no means unwelcome company. Though he did not anticipate to be greeted by her here, he never shies from an audience of any kind, happy to share his ballads and songs with whoever is willing to hear them. Her words make his heart sing, a wave of affection for Alatus tugging at his core like nimble fingers plucking the strings of a lyre. It's new to him too, this connection between them, but more precious, already, than any treasure on earth or in Celestia.

"For a bottle of Liyue's finest I'll play you any song you like, fair Lady- or perhaps a fruit from the apple trees that are rumored to grow between the peaks that scrape the clouds?" Venti chuckles. "As a symbol of old friendships." Of course there could be an exchange of an entire orchard and it wouldn't stop Morax and him from disagreeing over this and that. Despite his request Venti raises the flute to his lips a moment after and plays a few notes. What starts off as the melody he's played for Xiao takes a turn when the first breeze grips Venti's hair and clothes, tugging gently at Guizhong's robe as well. It grows merrier, hopeful with a hint of playfulness, like the gust of wind that picks the most beautiful leaf from the ground to make it dance through the air.

Up and up it goes, twirling to display its red and gold dress, like a youthful beauty on her wedding day. Never missing a step of the choreography only the wind and the bard's flute know, it draws its circles around the lovely goddess, eventually sailing peacefully into her lap when the sound of the flute ends.

Venti’s fingers dance across the lyre’s strings, playing a calm and gently melody that is carried away by the wind, across the plain and far into the distance. It is a melody of hope and peace, one that fills the heart and mind with words of courage and promises even though none are sung to accompany it. It might be a melody older than him or one he only thought of a moment ago - either way he plays it with ease and grace, each note plucked without hesitation.

He doesn’t stop when Xiao speaks but plays a little softer, allowing for his voice to be heard. The yaksha’s words make him smile, an expression that lights up his entire face all the way up to his eyes. “Does it?” He knows it does, he hoped it would, but he wouldn’t be Venti if he didn’t act at least a little surprised at the scope of his own abilities.

“Hmmm..” Xiao does not seem keen on telling him more about the way his music makes him feel but Venti admittedly is curious about it. He knows what ails the adeptus, knows what is eating away at him every moment of every day, no matter how much light he surrounds himself with. “Then I will keep playing and hope that it will reach you - wherever you are,” Venti concludes. For a moment he falls silent, the only sound between them the soft notes coming from his lyre.

“--You can speak of your burdens to me, Alatus. Who knows, maybe it will also help?”

You’d think writing Venti is mostly “ehehe” and getting drunk except when you have friends like Kay?!? Then it’s just devastation and fighting your friends to the death after you watched everything and everyone you ever loved die gruesomely.

Futile; he knew it to be true, for he knew should the situation be reversed – Morax would never walk away. The embers licked at the edges of his clothes; their flame trying to bite through to his skin as though they, themselves were offended. The contracts that bound him; once he had been so thankful for – never had he wanted so much to break one.

But he couldn’t.

He could not begin to fathom losing everything. Though Morax had lost plenty within his long life; not everything, and certainly not all at once. He couldn’t begin to fathom the pain, the rage that Barbatos was feeling. Though he could certainly sense it in the very air that surrounded them. The broken tone in his voice was enough to lance through him; while their personal history had not always been kind to them – Morax never wished him to feel as desolate and broken as he did now. Eyes trained on the beast beside him; just as much ferality coming from Andrius as there was from the Anemo archon. He could scarcely blame either.

This was a fight that was not going to end well.

Somewhere deep inside; they all knew it. Morax had known it from the moment he allowed himself to be pulled into that contract; despite the reasonings behind it; none would be enough to appease the storm now.

❝ You know I cannot. ❞ His voice too, held a weight to it. One seldom heard from him; regret. The very thought of turning away, stepping aside; had his body almost locked tight. He could not; even though he wished to, he could not break that contract himself. There was only one true way for Barbatos to venture forth; and that was through Morax. He knew, how could he not? Which option the Anemo Archon would choose; for it was the same one he would. He took a deeper breath; resignation. Acceptance. Defeat at being unable to convince him to stay his hand.

❝ Very well, old friend. ❞ His weapon now in hand , eyes burning with the power held within him. ❝ If this is truly the path you must take… I am sorry. ❞ For once; he did little to hide his true emotions, sadness. This could only end one way; one of them would not make it to see the next day.

– And Morax did not truly wish to fight Barbatos.

“No. You choose not to!”

Barbatos knew his enemy - he knew their faces, their voices, the very touch of their hands. Not too long ago they had shared a meal together and spoken of brighter days, of freedom and of love. If only he had known that he’d let death into his home and held its hand as it stretched its cold fingers towards everything and everyone he loved. Their bloody deed was made infinitely worse by their betrayal, every word of friendship spoken between them in the time leading up to this like needles in his chest. He had let them stay by his side, had trusted them, helped them even - and this was his reward for it.

Morax was not his enemy and yet he chose to stand against him, honoring an immovable word given in a time that could never have predicted this calamity over the reality screaming in his face. It was as incomprehensible as it had always been but Barbatos had no strength in him left to find a way around it. Here, at the end of things, he would accept that a will of stone could not be moved even by a tragedy as great at this. Perhaps the role Morax had played in the Cataclysm should have been all the warning he needed, but some part of him had clung to the hope that in the end he would make the right choice.

But a heart of stone was still only stone, it seemed.

Barbatos opened his arms wide, his eyes glowing as he gathered his power, and at once the storm around them grew even stronger, howling like a monster rearing up on its hind legs for one final attack. Cruel winds gripped the plains, tearing at Morax’ clothes and hair like invisible razor-sharp blades and pulling chunks the size of a person out of the very ground beneath his feet. Behind Morax the fires still blustered over the horizon whereas from behind Barbatos a terrible wave of cold thundered towards him, a blizzard made up of a thousand icy spears released with just a thought.

Only then Barbatos’ own weapon appeared in his hand - a bow of beautiful craftsmanship but tainted by signs of war and stained with memories, like everything Barbatos ever kept for himself. Like Amos once he held it with the determination of one willing to risk everything for their cause, unfathomable sorrow making his heart heavy and his hands tremble as he drew the first arrow and aimed it right at Morax’ chest. One after another his arrows flew without waiting to see if they ever struck their target, each one soaring towards that adamant heart with deadly precision. It didn’t matter what they hit as long as they hit something; pierced, hurt, killed.

In her opinion his performance had added something to the atmosphere that somehow seemed to have been missing in the years prior to the bard's return to Mondstadt, even if she couldn't put her finger on exactly what it was. || Jean

“Ehe~ my pleasure!” The bard says cheerfully, tucking his lyre away for now. The crowd seems ready and willing to listen to more of his ballads but he’s been playing for a while and as much as it pleases him to bring joy to their hearts by sharing his music he doesn’t actually want to be the center of the festival for all that long. There is so much more to enjoy - stories of past Windblume festivals, myths of its origins (arguably his favorite part), the ceremony of choosing this year’s flower and, of course, all the delicious mouth-watering festival food.

Food-- and drink, that is. “A few bottles of Master Diluc’s dandelion wine are payment enough for me!” Venti adds, smiling at Jean with the sweetest smile he can muster. “Surely you won’t let me go thirsty after my performance? There is enough to go around for everyone, right?”
