The Marigold Tarot by Amrit Brar

A tarot deck rooted in life, death, and gold.

On a whole, the Marigold Tarot has always been about creating a tarot deck in a style that my friends and I wanted to use. That meant illustrating a wealth of skeletons, flowers, and plants, and partnering all of them with the clothing and jewelry I grew up surrounded by in a Punjabi household.

Beauty

Every aspect of this deck is absolutely beautiful. It’s gorgeous. It’s elegant. And the gold that contrasts against the black conveys so much nobility and dignity. The creator knew what vibe she wanted her deck to exude and it really shows.

Reading

Aside from most of the major arcana, it’s not very easy to read even though it follows the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. It’s not made for novice tarot readers, but that’s fine. I’m sure there are people, like me, who are more than willing to go back and forth with between the cards and the translations, just for the sheer beauty and appreciation of the cards.

The purchase of the deck comes with a free PDF about its symbolism, which got me very excited when it came out because I was super interested in learning it. There are some quick facts, on Brar’s blog, of a few cards like The Wheel of Fortune and The High Priestess having some Punjabi inspired designs and being outside the Punjabi culture, I don’t know what was Punjabi or western based. So this makes me very happy.

Durability

The deck comes in a rigid two-piece tuck box. It’s incredibly sturdy. The golden foil on the box scratches off easily, so you have to be a little cautious where and how you place it. Opening the box, initially, was pretty difficult to open because the glossiness of the boxes would attach to each other, but it got easier to open over time.

The cards are made of 310gsm black-core linen, which is a French, professional casino paper card stock. It’s wonderfully light, yet sturdy which makes sure it doesn’t stay bended; because while I don’t know how to shuffle like a poker player, I shuffle with the tenacity of an UNO dealer.

That being said, I got the deck with the gilded edges. Little by little, the gold foil is coming off, but sometimes it just happens over time or when you treat it too roughly. Thankfully, the actual images on the cards remain the way it initially came.

Overall

I’m completely enamoured with this deck. I’ve gotten some really accurate reads even though it’s difficult for a tarot noob, like me, to read it.

Tarot Tips

🃏 Find The Empress in your deck. The card behind her will reveal what you need to do to nurture and care for yourself. 

🃏 When in conflict or competition with someone, look for 5 of Wands. The card behind it will reveal the solution to the problem.

🃏 If you see the same card over and over again in readings, it is a sign and you must pay attention to its message for you.

🃏 For a better understanding of each card, observe it closely and form your own interpretation that follows its themes. It will help you interpret readings better.

🃏 To find out what is making you feel stuck or delayed, look to The Hanged Man. The card underneath him will show what is holding you back. The card in front of him will show you how to overcome it.

🃏 When shuffling your cards, if any card drops out of your grasp, take it as a sign and read the card. 

🃏 You do not need crystals with you to do proper readings, but a good way to cleanse your deck is to place a clear quartz on the top of your deck before each reading. Keep in mind; there’s a variety of ways you can cleanse your deck.

🃏 Often when The High Priestess appears in a reading, she is trying to tell you that you know the answers and that you should listen to your inner voice.

🃏 There is no wrong way to shuffle or cleanse your deck. Do what feels right for you!
