Me: Where the fuck is Lord of the Flies and Catcher in the Rye?! Catalog says we saw them two days ago!

Library Thief

Well the last week has definitely been an interesting one! I went on vacation to try and deal with a little bit of the burnout that I’ve been feeling at work lately. I was about three days in when my supervisor messaged me asking if I knew where the Nintendo Switch was. Our Friends of the Library group had donated money to upgrade from our Wii before Covid-19 happened and we revamped our after school program for the teens. I replied saying I hadn’t seen it in a while since we aren’t having youth programming right now.

She then drops the bomb that the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii, and all of the games for both are gone. All of it together (although not adjusting for dropped prices of the Wii consoles and games) came out to about $1700 worth of stuff gone.Cue me picking my jaw from the floor. This stuff was locked in the back of a closet that no one other than staff had any business being in or knowing what was in there.

But wait there’s more!

We were also having weird occurrences where we would go to put a DVD in a case for a patron and wouldn’t be able to find the DVD sleeve or the DVD. At first it was one or two, then there was a day we found we were missing four. Definitely not normal. After comparing cases available to DVD sleeves we found that about 20+ were missing from our bin and routing boxes for other branches. When we made a list for the first couple that were missing we put it out on the desk for staff to add to it as they found them. That went missing too! There were no signs of forced entry and only certain people have a key to get in. A detective is looking in to it, but kinda feel like we’ve done a lot of the detective work in doing our own inventory and finding all the extra ones that are missing.

Hope that they’re enjoying their spoils. Thankfully someone that we know donated enough money for us to replace the Nintendo Switch and re-buy the games. It’s nice to know that when the library is in need there are those that’ll help us through the hard times!

Something that everyone needs to understand

Getting bodies in the door doesn’t matter when they could end up in a body bag later.

My response when my supervisor told me what our director’s main concern was during their last meeting. The vast majority of our patrons are in the at risk categories. Until this man gets sick (to the point where he fears dying) he’s not going to take this seriously.

So I've only listened to about 30 min of the Sandman audio drama on Audible and I'm already hooked and can't wait for my drive home to hear more! Every sound effect and voice actor is absolutely brilliant. Can't recommend it enough! Well done @neil-gaiman and everyone involved!
