If you thought “hm those styles of art AND speech seem very familiar,” you are right because it is the same person that did these
Oh my god damn
Update: Baby bird has successfully been given back to its parents yesterday!
Here’s a video of me feeding it its first ever meal last week :)
in case any of you were wondering how astronomically out of hand the unregulated exotic animal trade is in japan, here is ONE website’s catalogue of birds you can buy. it includes frankly every owl, hawk, turacos, and parrot imaginable including a NEW ZEALAND KEA which must have been poached
they also have a cafe/shop for you to go pet the birds
these birds are largely nocturnal, solitary, and cramming multiple different species in a small room with bright lights is completely disregarding their needs. this place is effectively a bird mill and there’s no way all the birds needs can be met, specifically that many parrots which are extremely intelligent birds and should not be pets either.
for the love of god DO NOT give patronage to owl cafes or any other exotic animal cafes, and stop sharing cute japanese viral videos of people with pet owls/otters/etc because this is the business you’re supporting
Hearing a wild barred owl outside your window is the best cure for all things shitty in life
Aplomado falcons are named for the blue-gray or plumbeous coloration of their plumage. This coloration is especially apparent on the wings and back of the bird.
This blog will be safe on Halloween
This blog will NOT post:

Reblog if your blog will be safe on Halloween
The only screamers here will be birds!
SCREMers perhaps but not screamers.
Why not screamers?
Another first…
This season I’m trying my first accipiter. I’m ready for disaster or amazement…so far she’s an awesome little girl. I’ve had most of my health issues resolved so I’m also looking forward to having more energy.
This sharp shinned hawk was trapped on September 30, 2018. She’s started hopping to the glove (with lots of distractions and noises) and we’re working on increasing the distance slowly. I’m trying to be as consistent as possible so she can start trusting me. Fingers crossed!!!
Good luck!!

He looks like he’s trying so hard to be a fearsome bird of prey and I’m so proud of him even if he wasn’t successful.
Tiny fluff ball of DEATH
I absolutely LOVE pygmy falcons.
Look at this cute, killer, fluffy birb!

I was alerted of a juvenile herring gull with a broken wing near my place of work, so I scooped the baby up and brought it to the center of wildlife in Cape Neddick. https://www.thecenterforwildlife.org
I'd never been there before so they let me tour their facilities a little bit and see their ambassadors. Sweetest things. Most of the birds were brought in after after car accidents that left them non releasable. Most of the mammals we're raised inappropriately or illegally and never learned to survive in the wild, or had lost their fear of humans. There were even more in addition to those shown above. The imprinted Merlin was sooo loud. 😂 I'll call today to see if the little gull was stitched up or euthanized. Either way, better than dying slowly and in pain in that parking lot.
While I was there , I also had them put me on a call list for transporters. It's about a 45 minute drive from Portland, and that's if you're willing to pay the tolls on the highway. I want to start a rehabilitation facility closer to Portland. There's just not enough of them. This was the second gull they had admitted that day, and right as I was leaving a guy came in with four baby squirrels. I left a small donation but it just didn't feel like enough. These guys were slammed.
Humans have created so many risks for wildlife, so quickly that they haven't had time to evolve around them. Cars, windows, poisons, you name it. Bird species everywhere are in decline. It's the least we can do to bring one injured animal to a place that can maybe fix it up. If you can, consider a donation this month to the center for wildlife or a rehabber you trust near you.
If I could release a patch for human anatomy, it’d include the restoration of a full nictitating membrane. It keeps a falcon’s eyeball from drying out during fast flight, protects vulture’s eyes from all the gore they push into while eating, creates a diving goggle for polar bears and amphibians…We lost our nictitating membrane because we didn’t really need it anymore but I want it back.
(Cats and dogs have nictitating membranes too but they’re usually kept retracted. You may see them if the animal has its eyes open slightly during sleep, though.)

Today was eventful and I did it all on one (1) non-contiguous hour of sleep.
Creanced a red-tailed hawk.
Released same hawk. (Yay!)
Caught three barn owls for transfer to another center. One of them grazed me with a talon right across my barn owl tattoo.
Caught very angry great horned owl for moving him to outdoor aviary.
While holding said owl against my chest, discovered a fuck-ton of lice on him.
Sprayed parasite killer stuff on owl.
Owl disapproved, squealed a lot, flapped wings and somehow stuck the tip of his left wing directly into my mouth.
Insecticide spray tastes awful: confirmed.
Caught screech owl for quick weigh-in and lice spray.
Screech owl’s cloaca was horribly swollen?? Possibly an internal parasite? What the fuck?? Medicated screech owl, need brain bleach.
Trained education barn owl. Delightful in every way.
Trained education red-tailed hawk. He was in a Mood and kept rejecting perfectly good pieces of rabbit because there was a Tiny Tuft of Fur and that was Unacceptable.
While cleaning his enclosure, a dried fleck of hawk shit (urate, really, but still) got flung directly. Into. My. Goddamn. Mouth. I will never be clean.
Trained education great horned owl. She is very good and very floof and really chills out if you just sit with her for 20 minutes or so.
Sat in grass waiting for other volunteers to be done with hose. Found a wonky little four-leaf clover. Mine now.
Got asked to look at newly-arrived turkey vulture nestling.
TUVU nestling had A WHOLE UNIVERSE OF MAGGOTS where its tail was supposed to be. You expected new little pinfeathers here? WRONG. MAGGOTS. We’re going to try treating it but honestly I doubt it’ll be releasable because those tail feather follicles have to be just annihilated. I’ll be happy to be wrong, but I’m not super optimistic about this dude.
Currently sooooo sleepy
Could easily pass the fuck out
