This is an anti-despair checkpoint! You must share something you're looking forward to before scrolling on.

#tomorrow i go help decorate the church for my sister’s wedding #and then the guy i like is coming to help me and my sister move her stuff to her fiancé’s house hehehehe #then friday more decorating and a pizza rehearsal dinner #then the wedding saturday! which is awesome enough on its own but also gonna be so fun to see all our old friends coming into town #and then sunday childcare with the kids at church which i really enjoy #but in the immediate future: strawberry cheesecake ice cream for my mental health #what a week this shall be #challenge

middle school me viewed Greek mythology the way medieval writers viewed Arthurian legends: as fertile grounds to be completely retooled in favor of what I wanted it to be. I had Calypso and Circe as sisters. Heracles was naught but a legend. Danaë married the god of darkness. Niobe turned into a werewolf and lived in a glass castle. Brynhildr was there.

#and i think for this reason i am more accepting of the idea that greek mythology movies / books can play with their source material #i'm not a book purist because i think mythology and legends are things that inherently grow and adapt with time #and while we need to recognize where they originated i think it's kind of dumb to expect everything to either (1) adhere to modern values #and function as a critique of the political incorrectness of antiquity or (2) fully depict thousand year old legends exactly as they were #written without any room for reinterpretation #there's a golden balance to be struck there #and obviously some adaptations do it better than others but there's value even in adaptations that totally rework the source material #and i think there's a different between boasting in your ignorance of the source material (ahem ahem wuthering heights)#versus embracing the source material but reworking it for your own piece of derivative art (the odyssey)#i wrote wayyyy more on this topic than i planned to write. wow #jane talks #greek mythology #the odyssey

also I think Herb Hawkins from Shadow of a Doubt is a forerunner of Pierre Tremond from Twin Peaks. Herb (a murder mystery enthusiast and an awkward bystander to the family drama) is an obvious stand-in for Hitchcock who does things that the rest of the characters simply cannot, such as noting how the Newton family has changed since Charles arrived, and later saving Charlie from dying in the garage. Pierre (a mysterious lodge spirit who appears as a little boy to give cryptic advice and guide characters to what they wouldn't find otherwise) functions the exact same way for David Lynch. they're both meta authorial surrogates intervening to shift the narrative in a way that's somehow both Doylist and Watsonian. the more I think about this the further into Hitchcock-Twin Peaks madness I descend

#mrs. jennings gleefully spilling about brandon's personal tragedy is hysterical #the beauty of jane austen's writing is that we all know someone like mrs. jennings #the characters are positively timeless #especially the supporting casts tbh #people never change #sense and sensibility #funny
