Summary||
Raising a child is hard enough but raising the chosen one is possibly harder. Harder still is being the chosen one. Thomas and Ezra Wainwright cope with their little predicament that is until things in their quaint village lives get crazy.
It started with a moving van, just an ordinary occurrence when it comes to the empty house next door but then comes the murder. The two aren’t connected but they are the trumpets that signal the end. From here on forward Ezra’s life gets a little complicated and Thomas is there to protect his son through it all.
Neither son nor father was made for fighting and so the help they can get from a hunter turned werewolf, his daughter, her boyfriend and an archangel will do them just fine. For this patchwork group it’s time to decode a map and save God’s life.
Extract ||
Thomas Wainwright, after waking from a gin induced sleep, had decided that he no longer liked that picture of Christ over the mantle and wanted it out of the house. It had been a gift from the Pope himself but the overly saturated image was somewhat dissatisfying when Thomas woke and an acidic taste had risen in his mouth as he raised his eyes to meet it. No, he was sure of it now. That icon of Christ had to go. On that thought so did the rug as he stood in something that looked like the rest of the bottle of Gordons that lay empty on its side upon the glass coffee table. Perhaps morning prayers could wait as he screwed his eyes and then opened them as wide as they could go as he stepped onto the hardwood floor. Other things that were not going to be completed in the usual ritualistic fashion was cooking breakfast for his son (he was sixteen after all) and ingesting any form of solid. It was mornings like this that abandoning his vows seemed like a terribly terrible idea. He wasn’t even quite sure if it was still morning - there was no cat complaining for food after all.
He spent a moment coming back from what felt like the deepest rings of hell in his kitchen, nursing his head in his hands and blindly reaching for a glass with tentative fingers by the sink. The blinds had not been shut the night before and the sunlight felt like 300,000 arrows dipped in acid as they reflected off the metal of pans and cutlery. It was a pleasant July morning to anyone else but Thomas was wobbling and every now and then he would lurch forward trying his best to aim for the sink. What madness had drawn him to drink so much?
The thought alone bubbled and squeaked with the incidents of last night. The strawberry blond could recall the screwed up face of his adoptive son and the angry agnst reflected in those golden eyes. It wasn’t easy for the man to go from celibate monk to father and now that the innocent two year old, who only threw tantrums when the inky black markings felt more like hellfire than skin, was now sixteen it seemed like parenting had gotten one hundred times harder.
‘Oh…’ Thomas sighed as he rubbed at his blue eyes and adjusted his long hair back into a neat bun. This morning was to resemble the aftermath of a war rather than the peaceful village life that the pair had grown to understand. Sure in theory both were eerie ghost towns, hollows of what life was like elsewhere but still one was harder to get through than the other.
After two paracetamols and two glasses of water, Thomas could admit he felt less dead. He admired the world outside the window, it was now easier to say that it was a nice day. It the warm sun the flowerbeds bloomed in the brightest colours and even though the country had been struck by a drought the grass remained a lush green. Not even a blind man could call this morning (Thomas was still unsure what time it was) anything else other than nice as there was a unique warmth that whispered against Thomas’ skin. Piecing together the events of the night before could have been easier but Thomas got there in the end and eventually left for the upstairs of his tiny cottage.
Although admittedly smaller than most in the village, Dog-rose cottage was uniquely homely. The kitchen door frame was marked with pen; small lines marking the height of a child with the snakey writing of the name Ezra and his age in years and months. Certain spots were repainted to cover grubby hand marks and crayon scribbles. The furniture was clearly worn and the carpet had seen better cleaner days. The hardwood floor was scratched and some of the tiles in the bathroom had cracked; everything could use a fresh lick of paint or to be replaced but yet it was these little things that showed the house was the home of a small family. Home…

After Ashlynn is killed and her dreams begin to disappear, Nara sets out to find the dream thief.
I likely will only be posting about my progress on the story, not excerpts or spoilery plot points. I don’t know how interesting that will be but if you’d like to be added to a tag list for updates anyway, just let me know!

Hello! Do you have any advice for someone getting back into writing and feeling inadequate/intimidated by their previous work? I wrote very little for a few years due to school, and now I'm getting back into it a few years after graduating. It's difficult because the words don't flow like they used to. The language feels clumsy to me now when it used to come so easily. I want to get back to something close to where I was, but it feels daunting.
Getting Your Writing Magic Back After a Break
The first and most important thing you can do is be patient. If you used to run marathons, then stopped for a year to let a knee injury heal, you’re not going to expect to jump right back into running marathons at your top time. You have to ease back into it. You’re going to be out of shape. There are going to be sore muscles. You’re going to be minutes away from your best time. But you get out there and run every day because you know you’ll get better and better as you get that momentum back.
With writing, those words that aren’t flowing like they used to? Those are your writing “muscles” being out of shape. The only way to get them back into shape is to keep writing, no matter how awful what’s coming out on the page seems to be. Write, go back and revise, then keep writing. As you put in the time revising, you’re retraining your brain to do it right the first time. The more you write and revise, the more easily those words will flow the right way the first time. Just keep writing and you’ll keep getting better.
And don’t underestimate the role that reading plays in our writing. If you want to write well, you should be reading, too. Reading is another way you can train your brain. It reminds your brain of how sentences should sound, how paragraphs should flow, how to describe things, and how to pace the story.
So, read, write, and be patient. It will come back with time! <3
you know what actually pisses me off? when I finally start to feel a smidge of confidence in my writing ability and then some JERK POSTS A SINGLE LINE FROM A TERRY PRATCHETT NOVEL AND IT’S BETTER THAN ANYTHING I WILL EVER WRITE NO MATTER HOW MANY MILLENNIA I SPEND TRYING!
Terry was a professional writer from the age of 17. He worked as a journalist which meant that he had to learn to research, write and edit his own work very quickly or else he’d lose his job.
He was 23 when his first novel was published. After six years of writing professionally every single day. The Carpet People was a lovely novel, from a lovely writer, but almost all of Terry’s iconic truth bomb lines come from Discworld.
The Colour of Magic, the first ever Discworld novel was published in 1983. Terry was 35 years old. He had been writing professionally for 18 years. His career was old enough to vote, get married and drink. We now know that at 35 he was, tragically, over half way through his life. And do you know what us devoted, adoring Discworld fans say about The Colour of Magic? “Don’t start with Colour of Magic.”
It is the only reading order rule we ever give people. Because it’s not that great. Don’t get me wrong, very good book, although I’ll be honest I’ve never been able to finish it, but it’s nowhere near his later stuff. Compare it to Guards Guards, The Fifth Elephant, the utterly iconic Nightwatch and it pales in comparison because even after nearly 20 years of writing, half a lifetime of loving books and storytelling Terry was still learning.
He was a man with a wonderful natural talent, yes. But more importantly he worked and worked and worked to be a better writer. He was writing up until days before he died. He spent 49 years learning and growing as a writer, taking so much joy in storytelling that not even Alzheimer’s could steal it from him. He wouldn’t want that joy stolen from you too.
Terry was a wonderful, kind, compassionate, genius of a writer. And all of this was in spite of many many people telling him he wasn’t good enough. At the age of five his headmaster told him that he would never amount to anything. He died a knight of the realm and one of the most beloved writers ever to have lived in a country with a vast and rich literary tradition. He wouldn’t let anyone tell him that he wasn’t good enough. And he wouldn’t want you to think you aren’t good enough. He especially wouldn’t want to be the reason why you think you aren’t good enough.
You’re not Terry Pratchett.
You are you.
And Terry would love that.
I only ever had a chance to talk to Terry Pratchett once, and that was in an autograph line. I’d bought a copy of The Carpet People, which was his very first book, and he looked at it with a faint air of concern. “You realise that I wrote that when I was very young,” he said, in warning.
“Yes,” I said. “But I like seeing how authors grow.”
He brightened and reached for his pen. “That’s all right then,” he said, and signed.
Hi Beast! Do you know any good websites for story/plot charting?
I had to do some research for this question! Look at you guys, making me dig through the bowels of the earth.
Hiveword - Requires you to create an account, but it’s free; allows you to make lists for your characters and their descriptions, list out your plot/story flow, has a built-in name generator and more
Read-Write-Think - Though this one seems to be geared toward younger kids, don’t be fooled - it has different charts that allow you to type out your plot, characters, setting, and resolution via visual maps; the only drawback is that it’s somewhat too simplistic, and doesn’t account for overly complex plots but it’s good for mapping out all the base information needed to plan your story
Scrapple - An app for PCs and Macs that is basically a combination between a mind map and a basic text-editing software, but geared specifically toward writers (if you don’t know what a mind map is, here’s a helpful article); the downside is that it’s $15, but there’s a free trial version available on the linked site
LitLift - Free site (with account registration) that allows you to organize your stories, characters, and plots (similar to Scrapple); also has sharing capabilities so that you can share your story within the site - you can also browse other peoples’ stories if they’ve been shared
Scrivener - Another app for PCs and Macs; like a more advanced version of Microsoft Word, except that it gives you an outliner to list out your ideas/plots/etc, ‘index cards’ to keep your ideas organized, ‘scrivenings’ - which basically function as tabs to switch between manuscripts, and a lot more; downside is that it’s $45, but once again there’s a free trial available on the linked site
Storyplanner - Site that has lists of resources where you can select from novel/short story, screenplay, or nonfiction and it asks you further questions in detail about your story; great for getting all your ideas out in one go (I look at it as sort of a ‘quizilla’ for your story, except it’s not full on Mary Sues and sadness); the site is free to use, but there is a premium edition, though you don’t really need it (you can just copy your answers to your nearest document)
Hemingway - Though this one is more useful for editing rather than planning, this in-browser site that allows you to either write right in the browser or copy/paste text into the window; points out any writing errors, repeated syntax, long-ass sentences, and all kinds of other helpful editing advice; there’s also a desktop version available for download
If anyone finds anything else that’s helpful, feel free to add it!
The Novel Factory is a program rather than a website, but it’s still pretty good. It has modules that you follow for plotting, and it has a Character Question Sheet of Doom, as well as helping you to break down everything from a story summary, to act break-downs to scene summaries to character EVERYTHING (including uploading photos of all sorts).
The only drawback is it’s gated behind $39.99 USD, but they give you a free trial for a week so you can at least find out if it works for you.
I poked the free trial, liked it quite a bit, and then saved up for the license (I’m Canadian, so it ended up costing me ~$50 with the exchange at the time). I’m going through the wizard now as NaNo Prep, and then plan on moving the Important Details over to Scrivener for the actual writing.
You can actually do the writing in The Novel Factory, as well (including compiling into a manuscript after, just like Scrivener), I just like Scrivener because I have it set up for daily word count tracking, and the like, and I haven’t poked TNF enough yet to see what it’s writing environment is like.
Reblogging cause I’m struggling to get my brainstorming in check at the moment.

Title: The Malachite King (previously Fog Hags)
Genre: Horror-Comedy, Adventure, Steampunk, Cosmic Horror
Type: Novel
Themes: Enemies to allies, guilt and coping, inner demons - it’s not a very theme-heavy story, really!
Jarvis Laprise is trying to deal with the mistakes of the past - which would be a lot easier if they didn’t include embarrassing a petty hitman, who is now in the process of getting his revenge.
All of that is swept aside, though, when something much worse awakens…

Not only did hundreds of them perish, but she worsened the ever-growing tensions between the land and the sea. Then she’s exiled from the faerie world, Elmsmere, and deemed a traitor by her own people.
But all that’s behind her, after Lark escaped from Elmsmere to the mortal world with her mother. She remains resentful at the people who kicked her out of her own home, and hasn’t thought once about turning back. The only thing that she truly loves is her magic; the mind controlling powers she has had all her life. SUMMARY:
The Gods have stopped listening to their people. Ronan knows because death came for his mother, his father, those he was supposed to protect. He knows because in each history book, his name is printed in red beside the Eye of Aevar, the mark of death. He knows because war rages, unending, across his land and takes the lives of both soldiers and innocents without remorse.
He knows because he’s spoken to them.
Prince Ronan Aldrea was marked for death centuries before his birth in an elaborate prophecy pieced together by his ancestors. When he was six, his father told him of it. When he was twelve, Ronan watched him cry over the words of the prophecy and resign himself to the death of his only son. When he was fourteen, a Circle of knights was established at his father’s command with the sole purpose of keeping Ronan alive through his twentieth birthday, the day he was fated to die.
Despite it all, Ronan never lost sight of hope. He was determined to one day lead his people, to stay beside the Circle that had been composed of those he had come to love, and to defy the prophecy that these ‘Gods’ had imposed upon him. Even when his city fell, he kept his head high. Even through the death of his father, the attack on his people, the forced escape from his home in the island’s capital, he stayed determined. But now, as the dawn of his death approaches and his situation only worsens, doubt has begun to wrap itself around his heart: just how much longer is he able to defend himself against the Gods that pull the strings of Fate?
