Before / After #Arcane
viktor arcane has to be one of the characters ever.
he's gay. he's terminally ill. he's suicidal. he's from league of legends. he's in a toxic relationship with an orb. he also might be the orb(???). he bullshitted his way into the academy by pretending he went there. he rizzed up a guy so he wouldn't kill himself. he then tried to impress said guy by breaking into his boss's lab. then when he got caught he tried to play it off by saying he thought this big intimidating door was his bedroom door and he was just trying to sneak a guy in there. he nearly died because hetero sex was happening like a mile away. kinda. he took illegal drugs. he's also the apprentice of the guy who's making the illegal drugs and never mentions it. he's inspired off of the tale of frankenstein's monster. he got shot by a missle and fucking died. when he came back to life he immediately broke up his messy gay situationship and became jesus fucking christ.
truly one of the characters of all time

Dementus meeting Immortan Joe:
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015) dir. George Miller
to me one of the most thought-provoking storytelling devices is centering a narrative around an observant/reactive victim or bystander. i find it interesting that these characters are most often women and only really noticed or deemed "active"/"badass" if they're armed or snarky at some point. so much of the ethos of a story is based on these characters, the observers and reactors, to tell us how we're supposed to feel about the events occurring before their eyes.
i'm of course mostly thinking of furiosa right now, whose silence is incredibly powerful throughout the film(s). she barely speaks but the story would not exist without her. we wouldn't have the same understanding of the world if we weren't following her, its victim. we judge when she judges, we're scared when she's scared, we're hateful when she's hateful. we see how violence happening to or around her profoundly changes her even if she has no words for it or when she chooses not to speak even if it might change her circumstance.
her arc really reminds me of characters such as irulan corrino or sansa stark, who experience much the same thing--being objectified, traded off, silently witnessing or recording the story without much power to change its course. it never ceases to amaze me (although it really shouldn't at this point) that anyone could come away from a character like this thinking "what did she do?" or "what was her purpose?" and yet this is the most common takeaway for characters in this vein. what did she do? she is a living consequence of other people's choices. she is the moral compass, the rememberer, the judge, the witness (especially furiosa, who is literally asked to bear witness to violence every day). she's us, watching. if you don't see the importance of that then do you really understand the story?

I feel exhausted, I think I put my whole soul in this piece, but definitely worth. I love this AU and also I can see my progress as an artist. I hope you will like it!
