Hot tip: if you’re not working your jars it ain’t magic, it’s just a cup of (probably molding) nonsense.
@ “spell jar” posts: unless you’re using it to conjure mold, it’s not gonna do anything if YOU don’t do anything.
For anyone understandably thinking “how would you know if you’ve never tried it”, well I actually gave tumblr magic a fair shot when I got here.
Tumblr magic is so completely different to anything in my path or studies that after a few double takes I thought, you know what? Let’s try it. Who the fuck am I to judge a praxis I haven’t even dabbled in?
The results? Honestly the same as if I try to manifest something into being by sheer force of will. Yes you can make this stuff work with some experience and power behind you but it’s nothing you couldn’t achieve by “wishing really hard”.
The spell jars? If you follow tumblr methodology what you’ll have there is some pot pourri with really good vibes. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’d make a lovely housewarming gift and if you’re powerful enough you could even manifest some shit…
Just know that the jar of whatever didn’t really help you do that, you did that all yourself. Imagine what you could do with some real, juicy magic.
This is why I always add a sigil and/or ask a deity to imbue my jar spell with energy. (I would give it more of my energy but I’m a spoonie, so you know, this just works better)
Sigils and imbuing energy (yours or anyone else’s) are pretty much exactly the opposite of what I’m talking about and are very much of the “passive” type spell jars I made this post about.
Bottle/jar spells should be shaken daily, or prayed/chanted over daily, or have candles burned over them at set hours or daily until they burn out, or buried somewhere significant, or thrown into running water, or a whole host of other things depending on your goals. If it’s sitting on your desk collecting dust you’re not working it, no matter how many gods you asked to whisper forbidden names into it.
Hot tip: if you dont feed your sour dough like everyday or close to everyday and if you dont ever use some to make dough and bake it you arent really making homemade sourdough bread.
Response: this is ovendooring! You are opressing me by telling me this. My molding jar of flour and dead yeast is bread even if I dont eat it, it works because I say it makes me feel ok when I see it. Step off.
This is why I write sourdough bread on the jar in pig latin, that makes it not need to be fed, kneeded, baked or anything–it makes me feel ok so it worked.
So first off, Either be polite and foster educational discussion or tell people to suck your dick. Don’t masquerade as the former while doing the latter. That’ll make you no friends at all.
Anyways. Why would burying it somewhere significant, etc, make a difference where marking it with something significant doesn’t? Why do you get to decide that?
What’s the difference? No seriously. What’s the difference between burying a spell jar or witch bottle on my property, and setting it up on a shelf on my property.
As far as I’m concerned they’re both passive. And while i’m here, there’s nothing wrong with passive magic.
Not all magic is like building sourdough. If your blend of magic is building sourdough then that’s fine but don’t tell everyone and their mother that they’re doing it wrong bc your nip of experience didn’t work.
Sure, sometimes spell jars are like sourdough and need to be worked and fed and so on. But more often than not? Spell jars are like PICKLES. The Work has been done either way. And if yall are really serious that I can’t sit a witch bottle or spell jar in my window sill but I can let it mold underground, and don’t see the problem? I can’t fuckin help you.
Let’s have a chat!
Actually jar spells are pretty interesting on the whole. Especially some jars which are not meant to be touched, handled, or otherwise disturbed unless you’re breaking the spell that’s in them. For instance, styles of souring jars or hexing jars - which I’ve used particularly well with ammonia (yes, ammonia), which were meant for dissolving and/or removing and/or stripping of a particular thing from a particular item. Slowly. Meant to sit in a dark hidden spot.
Granted a lot of witch jars or bellamine jars are buried (sometimes in the fire place, flipped over), but the concept there is the same. You make the jar, you turn it over, you bury it at your fire place, and you look for the nearest person with an intense ass headache. Some bellamine jars stay for centuries, and are dung up, and promptly… reburied right in the place that they were originally put. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartmann_jug
This isn’t the first concept of sitting jar, in fact, some jars are meant to be shields. Meant to “grow mold” or become cloudy, because that’s when the jar has done it’s job. It has a purpose, to be hit. To take in. To absorb. In the same way that another witch’s bottle works. In the same way that any talisman or amulet that falls works or breaks or suddenly “disappears”.
It’s true a lot of jar spells in Hoodoo requires extra details to work. Shaking jars certainly by the name are like that. Honey Jars / Sweetening jars require you to lick your fingers after you put the target in the jar, to sweeten them and you to them. It’s true other hexing jars require burial and require prayer, ritual and treaties with spirits. They need to be well oiled, well fed, well kept.
But jar spells aren’t limited to Hoodoo, and aren’t limited to certain folk magic type spells either that i have exemplified here.
Oh, and pot pourri? Pot pourri, properly handled, is oiled and fed to keep it fresh and managed. You have to stir it. I would call any jar spell that requires that the equivalent of pot pourri. Otherwise, you’ll just have moldy herbs. Anyone who knows how to make pot pourri would know that a good one will last for years as long as you manage and take care of it by stirring it and keeping it activated. Your metaphors are bad.
One more thing and on a personal note, in my mind the act of a witch or in some cases, as is this one, the spell caster, their act is not without power. The glance of a witch can curse. The spit of a witch can curse. Even the hair of a witch can lay claim, the grip, the handshake of a witch can cause something. Don’t mistake a witch’s movement for lack of power.
So when a witch or a spell caster takes a sprig of rosemary and puts it somewhere purposefully, let’s say, in a corner, or in the claw of the rooster, it’s not just because the rosemary contains something special about it. Something buried in it’s spirit. It’s because the witch chose that sprig specifically. I carefully choose every piece of thing that I work with.
Are you?
I check to see it’s health. I check to see it’s wealth. I check to see it’s form is most perfect for what I need. A thing chosen, selected by a witch has much power, in my opinion.
Do you?
See I can play this game as well, where I teach you a backwards lesson. Where I make assumptions about your practice, your doing, your actions, and by which I mean to shame you for my presumption of your lacking.
If you want to talk about spells, you know the blog handle. I love them. Jar spells are very interesting. I’ve thrown a few jars into some rivers, much to the anger and surprise of some of my followers. I’ve broken my jar spells before.
I do like much of tumblr’s willingness to experiment with jars, and most other spells. I would be very interested to see how a jar with flour, salt, yeast, sugar, would sit. I wouldn’t necessarily add water here, but I might. A specific selected water. It might be interesting.
After all, there are a few home protection spells which include flour, salt, sugar, and a few other things, as well as a penny with the year that the house was built, meant to be stored in the heart of the home, to not be interfered with. Because it works passively as a protection amulet.
Even the jars themselves are important, just like the bellamine jar’s shape. Some vessels work the form, and that’s why you choose them. Some of them are meant for the color of the jar. Blue Jar spells have been spoken about for years for specific kinds of binding spells, or domination spells.
So there’s a strong history of jars being “set” and “forgotten.” The work is done because you, the worker, has worked it. Adding more on to it, is not needed and may disrupt the jar’s purpose. Especially if someone catches you, and you accidentally drop the jar and shattering it - as is the case in one particular blue jar’s story that I remember circling around the ‘net. Best left to alone to do it’s job, rather than handled.

It's spooky season. All those pumpkins being sold can be used for many purposes. Carving pumpkins? Save the seeds. They can be used for a variety of purposes, especially for prosperity and fertility. Carve something into a pumpkin for protection or prosperity. When it starts to rot, toss it in the compost. Maximize the potential for pumpkins instead of throwing everything in the garbage.
Tips for shopping safely as a pagan
Buying things for our religious praxis is a joy. I love receiving something for my gods and my devotion to them. Yet, there is always a danger when searching for new items. In paganism, bigots are everywhere, and that is atrocious. As I’ve collected shops for my Masterpost, I’ve learned a couple of ways to make sure that you do not support these bigots.
1 • Know dogwhistles
An excellent way to avoid bigots and hate groups in general is knowing dogwhistles. Products, websites, etc may all contain these. By knowing dogwhistles you will be able to avoid buying from awful people.
2 • Know hate symbols
An excellent way to avoid horrible shops is knowing hate symbols. Make sure to check each shop to see if they sell them. For example, an effortless way to check is to search up the well-known n*zi symbol, the “black sun”. If a shop sells black sun imagery, report, spread the word, and do not buy from them. There’s plenty of other cases — but generally, please look through the shop’s collection to see if they contain these. It’s an easy way to avoid bigoted sellers.
3 • Know which pagans are bigots
I mention this because some still buy from shops run by known neo-n*zis. Plenty of pagans have been shown to hold bigoted and dangerous beliefs. Therefore, know them and their shops so you do not buy from them.
4 • Check reviews and callouts
Generally, it would help if you are looking at shop reviews. Reviewing will help you and your overall shopping experience. In this case, look at reviews for certain items. If they mention instances of bigotry — or if you see bigots buying items with imagery such as the “black sun”, you want to avoid. Secondly, look for call outs. If a shop itself seems to be okay but the owner has been proven to be a terrible person, don’t buy from them.
5 • Avoid genuine cultural appropriation
In paganism, I have seen pagans run around claim to be “mystical shamans” who burn white sage, claim to have opened their “third eyes”, have extra powers from crystals, and aligned their chakras. Naturally, some of these pagans will own stores. Do not buy from pagans that exploit and harm other cultures/peoples.
This requires you to know what genuine, actual cultural appropriation is, and that is on you. Research is your friend and so is following people from these cultures & practices. Some are willing to answer questions about what is and is not an appropriation of their practice. The resources are there, and you just have to take them.
6 • Do not buy from folkists
Folkism is a special kind of bigotry/hate group within paganism. Do not buy from them — if you do not know what a folkist is, please learn. They are dangerous.
There are likely more tips for shopping safely as a pagan. These are just the ones that I have collected over time. Please remember to be safe and do not put money in the hands of those who harm others. Bigotry hurts people, and supporting these bigots is even worse.
Tldr; My tips for shopping safely as a pagan are: know dogwhistles, know hate symbols, know which pagans are bigots, check reviews and callouts, avoid genuine cultural appropriation, and do not buy from folkists. Avoiding buying from bigots is necessary.
Hey witches stop acting like daily practices can only be big rituals or full on spells. This is (inherently) an ableist idea. It may be for you and thats ok! But for other people who may be disabled or otherwise dont have the energy for such things im working on a list of daily witchcraft practices in my book of shadows and wanted to post some :)
Theres way more than this too! Its whatever works for you as each individual's witchy journey is different! But i wanted to post this list for those who want a daily practice but cant find one simple or low energy enough to work for them. And remember if you dont do something one day thats okay! Its not like schoolwork, theres no consequence for missing a day or more and you can always try and do it tomorrow! You can also try weekly practices instead if thats more your style, i try to pull a tarot card for the week every sunday/monday :)
(I will reblog this with updates!!)
small witchy things to make every day magickal
stir your morning drink (coffee, tea etc) with intent
pull a tarot card each morning for the day ahead or night for the next day
wear crystals or jewellery you’ve enchanted
wear certain colours that correspond to certain things
incorporate kitchen witchcraft into your everyday cooking
bid you deities or spirits good morning or good night
create a playlist that makes you feel witchy and listen to it
listen to witchy podcasts
meditate for a few minutes to ground yourself
admire nature from your window even if it’s just a distant tree or even the clouds
make a quick sigil and carry it with you (sigilscribe is a great website to quickly create sigils if you don’t have time to make one for yourself!!)
talk to the moon, say goodnight before bed
A Crash Course on Channeling
What is Channeling?
Channeling is allowing a nonphysical entity to use your physical body, in order to accomplish something. If that sounds, vague, it’s because it is. Channeling takes many different forms and intensity levels! Depending on how it’s done, it can be a medium-difficulty task or one of the most advanced things a spirit worker can do.
Types of Channeling
I once heard channeling described as a car ride, and in my experience that’s very accurate. The car is your body, and you’re in it with an entity. Sometimes you’re in the driver’s seat, and the entity is in the back seat giving directions. Sometimes you or the entity is in the passenger’s seat: not calling most of the shots, but able to reach over and grab the wheel if needed. Sometimes you’re in the backseat watching the entity drive, and sometimes you’re in the trunk. In practice, this can take a number of forms.
Speaking on Behalf. This is the kind of channeling people do most often. The entity isn’t controlling you, just feeding you lines which you can then relay to a third party. You’re translating their messages to something other people can comprehend. If you’ve ever answered a question for a spirit in their words, you’ve done this.
Isolated Channeling. The entity takes control of just a part of the body, usually the hands or fingers. This is mostly used for things like automatic writing.
Assuming Form. Also known as consensual possession. The entity is in the driver’s seat, speaking and acting for themselves without your help. Some people will call this “horsing.”
Possession. While the word “possession” could technically cover all of this, within the spirit work community it’s usually reserved for channeling where the human did not consent beforehand. This doesn’t necessarily mean in a violating way- I once had a friend who got possessed just long enough for an entity to yank them out of danger; once I was taken for just a moment to convey a quick (but very direct) message to a devotee, and snapped out of it right after.
Reasons to Channel
Everyone will have a different reason to channel but most of them fall under a few categories:
Helping Someone Else. You’re channeling on behalf of someone who can’t [easily] reach the entity themselves, in order to ease communication between the two parties. This is often seen with mediums contacting spirit guides and Ancestors.
Aid in Other Works. The entity is better suited to accomplish a certain task than you, so you let them take the lead. This is often seen with a familiar or spirit companion, someone the practitioner works with closely enough to know their strengths and trust them.
Easier Communication Overall. Channeling is a way to get really familiar with an entity’s energy. Again, we often see this with spirit companions and is more to bond than to achieve another goal. This would include automatic writing or letting a spirit experience things “through” you.
Ritual Invitation. In some traditions, it’s common to invite deities to ritual events. Often, some type of channeling/possession is expected and is usually reached through ecstatic experiences. It’s taken as a sign the deity has arrived at the party, either a sign the offerings have been received or a time for the deity to convey important messages.
Before-You-Begin Essentials
Know How To Protect Yourself. This is non-negotiable. Is your discernment tuned enough to spot an impostor or malevolent entity? Do you know how to end a session early? Do you know how to banish a spirit in an emergency? If the answer is no, then study up and return to channeling when you’re ready.
Know Your Entity. Channeling, by nature, puts the practitioner in an intimate and vulnerable place, so you don’t want to give that access to an entity who may misuse it. If it’s your first time channeling, make sure you trust this entity with your life.
Don’t Channel Alone. When you channel, you’re in an altered state of consciousness. Having someone grounded near you helps keep the session on track and keep you out of trouble should you need it. (Either by forcing an entity out if needed or just keeping you from climbing that tree.)
Other Notes
It’ll Probably Take a Lot Out of You. Have something ready to ground and rehydrate yourself after a session, and make sure you don’t have anything high-demand planned after.
Start Small. No need to jump head-first into the most advancecd and high-intensity types of channeling! Start with automatic writing or painting and get used to the feeling and work your way up.
Don’t Make It Weird. Basic etiquette still matters. Channeling is not a pass to give unsolicited messages to other practitioners, speak on behalf of their deities to them (unless they’ve specifically asked), or say hurtful things cushioned by: “What? It wasn’t me who said it.”
Messages Are Rarely “Pure.” This means everything is still filtered through you, the practitioner. Your values, morals, biases, and beliefs can inform what messages get through and how they are conveyed. Nobody wants to send out a message they disagree with, after all. This becomes less of an influencing factor with experience as one learns to hone their skill and let go more, but it’s important to always keep in mind. (If a channeling friend says a deity doesn’t accept your gender identity or something, that’s a good sign that really your “friend” doesn’t accept it.)
It’s the most wonderful time of the year 🍂🎃

Time For A Witchy Checkup
Hey you! Stop scrolling for a moment, it’s time for your checkup. Take a moment to check each of these things and fix any problems you might find.
Wards and Shields
Are your special spaces still warded properly? Are the barriers still strong? Are there any holes or damages?
Are your personal shields still there? Do they need refreshing? Are there any gaps in coverage? Can you still do your work through the barrier?
Altars and Tools
Are the altars clean and organized? There’s no dust?
Are there any offerings that have been sitting out that need to be refreshed or disposed of?
Is there any unusual energy in any of your consecrated items?
Does everything feel charged and ready?
Your Body
Have you taken all of your meds that you need today?
Have you been eating/hydrating properly?
Getting enough sleep?
Does your body need anything from you right now to feel a bit better?
Entities and Other Things
Are there any regular offerings you give that you could/should check off?
How are things with your familiar? Your companions? The local land wights? The spirit(s) of your house? Do they need anything from you to keep the relationship strong, if you have one?
Are there any unexpected entities hanging around/taking up anchors? (Give your knickknacks a good check for this, as well as any old toys and jewelry.)
Do you have any promises, dedications, or oaths you’ve taken up? Have you been maintaining your end of the deal/is there anything you can do to be progressive about it?
