Mari Kondo is literally the ONLY organizational expert I’ve ever seen not harming people with those disorders. Her techniques are specifically designed to where everyone can use them. It’s a personalized treatment where the person, not the organizer is in complete control. I’m starting to get pissed at the people I’m seeing shit on her.
She even goes out of her way to tackle “sentimental items” as a completely different category, not to put them in the category they would otherwise go into. Her technique of taking everything of a certain kind (rather than going by rooms) is SPECIFICALLY better for people with OCD because that stops the compulsive need to keep each room a certain way by only moving small aspects of each room at a time and not fucking up the whole thing.
What the fuck is that person on about? Have they ever actually read her books?
Kondo’s method is significantly better for people with what you’re calling “hoarding disorder” (which is actually a generalized control disorder with object attachment) because it doesn’t “force users out of the comfort zone”- it allows them to be in control of the process. This idea that we HAVE to force people with object attachment out of the attachment has been debunked over and over- it’s actually better to let them retain a degree of control, for the same exact reason parents shouldn’t take away a child’s comfort object “because they got too old for it”.
Kondo’s method allows the user to retain control, and has been shown to be significantly better at behavior management for people with the very disorders that person listed so what the actual fuck?

I started watching her show just yesterday, and she always saves sentimental items for last, but the woman she was working with had just lost her husband, and after doing HER big pile of clothes, she felt like she couldn’t move on to the books like Marie wanted her to UNTIL she also went through her husband’s clothes and finally got them sorted out into trash, donation, and keep piles. Marie flat out said “I usually save sentimental items for last, but this is a special case, so I allowed her to switch up the process so she was more comfortable.” She also offered to help the lady sort her husbands clothes, but the woman expressed the wish to do it alone, so Marie said “I am trusting her to do this herself.”
Marie Kondo always takes the individual needs of her clients into account, and they always have complete control over their environment when using her process. Leave her alone.
Oh and ALSO she never tries to control what people decide to keep, and when working with a family with two children, mentioned to the parents that it was important not to judge each other over what each person decided to keep. If it sparks joy for you, it sparks joy, she doesn’t care how old, silly, or decrepit it might be. It’s awesome.
