i wonder if someone listening to high hopes divorced from the rest of the album would have a more positive/uplifting read on it. bc i personally can not hear it as anything other than an absolutely heartbreaking admission of defeat. like you’ve just decided to completely give up and you’re mourning the life you might have had. that you COULD STILL have if not for the whole giving up thing. and it’s bittersweet because on the other hand you are so tired and giving up really does sound nice actually. i’ve had high hopes all my life (and look where that got me)
