Each year, as the weather starts warming up, I get hit with nostalgia for childhood summers and those long, hot, lazy days spent doing almost nothing besides reading as much as I wanted. Some of the books I read were for school assignments or chosen randomly from the bookcase at home, but most were picked up at my local library, which was close enough to walk to if I had nothing else to do (which I usually didn’t).

The library ran a summer challenge every year for any kid whowanted to participate: for each book read, you got another stamp on your game card, collecting small prizes along the way and a larger one at the end. It was fun and motivating and it was a nice way to keep track of what I was reading.

A lot of libraries still offer summer reading challenges, for kids and adults, and I thought it would be fun to make one of our own in the form of a bingo card! The squares are meant to be as accommodating as possible of different reading preferences while still encouraging you to get out of your comfort zone and read something new.

Booklr sleepover update 4, Sunday evening

I ended up going to Shakespeare & Co. to sit in the upstairs reading rooms in the afternoon and I got to 23% of Keepers 4!

Bingo:

- do a comforting non-bookish hobby: caught up on my diary for the past few days

I treated myself to some banana-walnut-pancakes for a late breakfast and I finished Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars! I really liked it. Not a new favorite but I had a great time reading it.

didn't do much reading and it's really late now but got some more stuff from the bingo:

- watch an episode of your comfort show: watched an episode of a show while eating, I think I'd call it a comfort show? It's this French procedural about a police officer and her autistic colleague. The autism rep is questionable and the interpersonal relationship drama always pisses me off lmao. But the mysteries are usually fun and it's not super graphic. Used to watch it with my mom.

Booklr sleepover update 1, Saturday Afternoon:

I went to the park this morning and started Fierce Femmes and I'm already 66% through! I like it, it's weird but not as weird as I expected from the synopsis.

I also found this pretty peacock feather!

Switched to KotLC (7%) on the subway back home to give my brain a break.

Now that I'm back home I'm watching DashCon 2 2 and tidying up my room, will probably read some more this evening.

I just finished The Listeners by Maggie Stiefvater Yesterday evening so I'm gonna start some new books for it!

Options are:

Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars : a Dangerous Trans Girl's Confabulous Memoir by Kai Cheng Thom which I recently bought at a sapphic-feminist bookstore.

Keeper's of the Lost Cities 4 (French edition) by Shannon Messenger cause I've been rereading the series and I'm like 5% into this one right now and have been neglecting it for months cause it's on my ebook lol.

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi, I put it on hold from the library cause I wanted to read a book that's set in Paris while being in Paris for two months this summer and it just came in and also I'm leaving Paris in five days rip.

To Clutch A Razor (Curse Bearer 2) by Veronica Roth, I got physical copies of it and When Among Crows, reread When Among Crows and am now foaming at the mouth to finally read book 2!

This Is How You Lose The Time War by Amal EL-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. I've read it in full four times in the past four years (but I must have started it a bunch of other times) and I find something new every time! I've listened to the audiobook too but I preferred the reading experience.

Absolutely Always Human by Ari North! Read it on webtoon first and immediately bought the physical copies when they came out. I just love the world building and the characters are so cute and I related to them a lot. Plus the art is GORGEOUS!

The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren. First manga I read (hilariously, what made me discover the series was James Somerton's video about it lmao) and it's so good and creepy and queer and I am starting to think that maybe I do like horror.

That one's kinda hard but I'm gonna go with the All For The Game trilogy by Nora Sakavic lmao.

I grew up in Stuttgart, Germany and let me tell you I was baffled when this book just name dropped my hometown on me.

I've been to pride there so when I imagine Andrew And Neil at pride or see art of them at pride, I like to picture them at Stuttgart pride when visiting Nicky and Erik and it makes me really happy.

Finally have some time for this so I'll catch up real quick.

Day 1

Probably Les Âmes Croisées by Pierre Bottero (it's French, I don't think there's an English translation :/ ). This was one of my favorite books as a kid. It's YA/middle school fantasy about a girl basically becoming a knight, her armor can talk, it ties into the same universe as other bills by this author, it's great! There isn't explicit queer rep but the main character says something that makes it pretty easy to interpret her as aroace. I doubt I picked it up when I first read it but I was definitely happy to find a female character that wasn't interested in romance at all. The book ends in a gigantic cliffhanger and there should have been sequels but the author tragically died right before this book was released so we'll never know if he would have stuck with this or find her a love interest in the end (I don't think so based on how the first book is written but you never know.)

First explicitly queer book would have been This Is How You Lose The Time War by Amal El-Mothar and Max Gladstone which is crazy to me cause that was only 4 years ago.

Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami: Japanese lit fic, mother-daughter-sister relationships, being a woman in the world, motherhood

You Should Be So Lucky by Cat Sebastian: Queer historical romance, baseball star and journalist, being queer in the 60s, grief, very very funny but also very heartfelt

Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer: Essay collection, all about mosses, how they work, why they're important, how awesome they are! very immersive writing style, short essays (most around 8 pages)

My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russel: Lit fic about a teacher-student relationship, grooming, definitely check trigger warnings, but also fascinating exploration of grief and healing

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir: (only gave it 4.75 stars, but will probably give it 5 when I reread it), sequel to Gideon the Ninth, literally can't say anything about it except, the use of the narrative voice is SOOO good.
