One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.

The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.

And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.

And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.

I remember how rare it used to be for a kid to die. I remember how we had one kid die in a car accident in my high school class: one in a decade. The school literally shut down for three days for a long weekend. It wasn't normal. It wasn't average. It was a big deal. Now in an average school system there are two or three dying of illness every year, and our government wants you to believe we're all "#BacktoNormal." I'm so tired of reading news reports about 11-year-olds dying of cardiac failure. I'm so tired of reading news reports about 15-year-olds dying of illness. I'm so tired of reading news reports about 21-year-olds having strokes. I'm so tired of people pretending like this is normal and there is no reason to avoid covid infections. Now it's business as usual when kids die. It's normal. It's average. It's no big deal.

Please mask up. Keep kids safe.

This is an excellent story and use of free will, and a great example of why corporations want to know everything about us.

If credit card companies could access our medical records and see that someone is terminally ill, they would absolutely block you from ever getting approved. You’re too high risk.

Data privacy is key to escaping the total control that corporations want to have over our lives. If we lose it, we risk losing our freedom.

Trump corruption and conflict of interest are now the operating procedure of all Republicans.

The hypocrisy and double standard solidifies a two-tier justice system: one standard for white men, and another different more binding set of standards for everyone else.

The corruption is out in the open because they know it doesn't matter anymore. No one is coming after them. They destroyed all the institutions that could have.

As Sarah Kendzior, a scholar on authoritarianism said: "The 21st century's most desirable currency is impunity. Impunity, the sadist's conception of freedom, mainstreamed and marketed as the new American Dream."

When these people show you who they are, believe them. Then act accordingly.

How does a country collapse, all while the citizens looked on— some in horror, others in resignation?

In his book "Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation", Alexei Yurchak defined the term hypernormalization: "everyone in the Soviet Union knew the system was failing, but no one could imagine any alternative to the status quo, and politicians and citizens alike were resigned to maintaining the pretense of a functioning society"

Meaning: people in the USSR kept pedaling even though they could see their bike falling apart until one day the wheels fell off.

Because no one took decisive action to course correct, not enough people stood up and said "hey, we need to start fixing things now", no movement coalesced to organize and prepare, collapse became inevitable.

Now think about how we are watching the federal government implode. Agencies that help ensure we have clean water to drink and safe food to eat have been decimated. Organizations that help monitor and stop outbreaks across the world have been hobbled.

The president and his allies are enriching themselves by robbing the rest of us. Taking advantage of a sinking ship to loot everyone on board before getting away with their multiple passports and bunkers.

All while Americans think "if it was truly bad, someone would do something." "America is special, stuff like that could never happen here."

We need to do. something. Now.

Otherwise we are going to fall just like they did.

(Think really hard about how likely it is you'll have access to healthcare during and after a collapse. Can you afford to get sick? It's time to start regularly wearing a respirator to protect your health. Cause fuck knows the government is not going to protect you.)
