This fearsome-looking beast is the largest known Burgess Shale animal. Some related specimens found in China reach a length of six feet! The giant limbs in front, which resemble shrimp tails, were used to capture and hold its prey. A formidable mouth on the undersurface of the head had a squared ring of sharp teeth that could close in to crack the exoskeleton of arthropods or other prey.

Anomalocaris is one of the most widely distributed of the Burgess Shale animals. In addition to Canada and China, specimens have been unearthed in Cambrian deposits in Greenland and Utah. After death this large organism tended to disintegrate and fall apart into separate chunks, and completely intact fossil remains are very rare. Since these chunks resembled other kinds of simple animals (such as those shrimp-like front limbs), for a long time the separated pieces were interpreted to be individual animals. No one was able to recognize Anomalocaris for what it was until complete specimens began to be found! (Source)

Guys, I edit professionally. This list is legit. Incorporating these suggestions before you hire an editor will save you A LOT of money. Even if you did these and nothing else, you’d see significant overall improvement in your work.

That said, you don’t have to overthink these things when you’re writing a first draft. If you write, “she said angrily” in a first draft, you can always revisit the phrasing in a second draft. I mention this because overthinking style can lead to a loss of momentum, and losing momentum is why so many people never finish a draft. Give yourself permission to write fast, write messy or ugly, and edit your draft into beauty later.

I like to think of the first draft as the ‘okay if i die before I write the final version and someone finishes it posthumously what do they need to know to get where I was basically going?’ Which means it doesn’t need to be good, it just needs to be.

It’s also what leads to going back and rereading your draft to edit and finding the phrase boner stuff because you didn’t want to lose momentum writing a sex scene.

On another note, I find it helpful to have a text to voice program read it back. Helpful for finding smaller errors and to hear the pacing, the variation (or lack thereof) in sentence length. It’s easier to hear when I’ve used the same word/phrase repeatedly.

As well as the fact that although AI voice’s aren’t terrible hearing it without really any inflection helps because when you go back and listen you might know exactly how you want the phrase to be said, tone, speed, inflection etc. but hearing it without that can help determine if it reads that way to someone who has zero clue what you were thinking.

Sometimes it makes it very obvious that I either need to italicize something or break a couple of sentences up to force the person to slow down. It also might then be obvious you need to add some other details to really show what’s happening rather than relying on punctuation or structure at all.
