Being an Auror was… hard. Not that Marlene didn’t enjoy it, because she did, a lot. She was learning so much and in a way, it kind of felt natural. However, she quickly became aware of how much she was underestimating things, how easily moved she was by certain things. The first time she went to Azkaban she nearly fainted, the only reason she didn’t was because she was a stubborn idiot. How on earth she was going to faint in front of Alastor Moody? Of course, she probably looked like a bloody ghost, but at least she remained conscious the entire time.
However this time was different. This time she went with her father and Frank. Marlene helped her brother Nicholas and her cousin to catch a highly wanted death eater. Of course, she was still green, Nicholas and Frank did most of the job, but she helped and that’s why she was in Azkaban, about to see one of the most disturbing things she will ever see in her life: a dementor’s kiss.
Marlene stood between her father and Frank, there were other Aurors in there as well. She didn’t want to see this, this was barbaric. The death eater was screaming, pleading for his life and even though Marlene did an excellent job on keeping her straight face, her heart was clashing furiously against her ribs. Her patronus was in front of her, but not even that made her feel better.
The dementor placed itself in front of the death eater and Marlene felt her father moving closer to her, as if he was trying to protect her. The dark creature removed his hood and Marlene’s heart stopped. The death eater screamed louder than before, but no one made an attempt to stop what was going to happen. Marlene wanted to yell as well, to send her patronus and get rid of the dementor, but she couldn’t move at all. The dementor cupped the man’s face and sucked out his soul. She could not see this, so she looked down and closed her eyes until it was over.
Marlene felt her father’s hand on her back. “It’s over” he whispered quietly and she opened her eyes. The guards were dragging the man out of there, Marlene didn’t manage to see him, but it was better that way. “There’s no need for you to stay any longer” Frank told her, squeezing her shoulder and Marlene nodded. She didn’t need to be told twice and apparated away.
It was an abandoned alley near the Ministry. The screams were playing on repeat and before she could realize it, Marlene placed one hand on the nearest wall and began throwing up, pouring all out. It wasn’t long until she heard some footsteps apporaching to her. She didn’t see who it was, however, she pulled out her wand and pointed at this person without looking up. “Leave, now” she hissed before throwing up again.
